Both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were great console shooters with ZERO health packs, just body armor, iirc. You had to complete the entire mission and couldn't even save during it. Both of those sold very well and 13 year old me played the hell out of them. If modern game companies brought back health they'd sell just as well.
Let's face it, Goldeneye hasn't aged well but there is a remake in the works due out November 2 (5 in Europe). Perfect Dark was the better and harder of the two games and would have been my choice for a remake.

If that was as true as you make it to be, wouldn't they have done that already?

The first 2 brothers in arms were BRUTAL on the Realistic difficulty. No health/body armor, no checkpoint saves.

Then hells highway had hide n heal. Poop.

Hells Highway could very easily be fixed with changing the speed of the health regen, making the enemies actually advance towards you a lot more, increasing the damage of the enemies and so on. It's all design, not just regen or health packs.

I could make the same argument as yours, but against health packs.

Look at F.E.A.R. 2. No regen health. Just armor and health packs. I started it on Hard and i died only at the end and that's it. I died a lot more just in that Brazil level in Modern Warfare 2 than I died in the entire F.E.A.R. 2 game.

So, CLEARLY  , health packs make the game a lot easier, right? Right?

Actually all of the game cited didn't have any form of health packs in the difficulty mentioned. That said, implementation really is key. Regen limits the mistakes per engagement whereas standard health limits the mistakes per stage which means the larger the stage, the more difficult old school health becomes.

I honestly don't know which I prefer, regen will punish you heavier for making a single big mistake whereas standard will punish you for making too many mistakes total. A combination of the two would result in the most brutal system.

They should just make a Demon's Souls with guns... and add a hardcore mode. Mmmmm, Demon's... guns... soul.

Demon's Souls with guns sounds pretty funny, considering it's kinda supposed to be the Japanese Oblivion

Are you talking about F.E.A.R. 2? Because that game did have health packs, usually taken from dead enemies.

Metro 2033 had that combined "brutal" system and it really wasn't that hard at all.
