Josh Sawyer plays New Vegas for charity

I wish Unarmed would just straight up have a combo system. Punches, Kicks, Knees and headbutts. But it would be hard on a first person game now, and would probably seem like it had too much focus in comparisson to other skills if they did it like that.

Or they could just have the grenade button serve as an Unarmed attack button if no grenades were equiped.

This might seem stupid but what do you guys think about adding shields in Fallout?

If they were to be added, they should work as Melee weapons with a weak bash attack to compensate for a held guard. Guns should tear through them unless they are ballistic shields, maybe have some melee weapons that are a combination of Blade and shield like the Caesar's New Regime mod adds? GRA added that Fatman (or was it a missle launcher?) that had a shield gave a bost to DT when equipped too.

Limited use. Shields are no good against guns making them pretty obsolete. Now if a Fallout game was based more in a tribal area... yeah it could work. But I'm not sure if the gamebroyo will handle them well.

But you wondered wether the engine could handle shields, when the thing was made for Medieval games with shields...

I don't really see how shields would be that complex to handle seeing how they already have Blocking mechanics...

I'm just throwing ideas around. Having melee focused faction turns out to be a good idea.

On another note, I hate the bar fight scenarios. It seem like a cliché way of justifying an Unarmed skill.

Say what? Bar fights are the best! Also, which game are you talking about now? The only one I can think of with formalized bar fights is Skyrim. The execution on those wasn't ideal, mostly because the melee fighting system is about as lame and repetitive as the rest of it. But I wouldn't have minded something similar in the old Fallouts. It always bothered me that there was no scaling lethality when it came to fights. Punch someone in a bar, and everyone on the block was ready to kill you or die trying.

On the shield thing, I guess I could see riot gear or scavenged sheet metal being interesting in a first person Fallout game. Would probably be cooler as a way to block ranged attacks. Of course, some bullets would go straight through...... Other than that, I don't really picture shields in the Fallout universe. Melee combat in the original games always struck me as a decisive win/lose move. You don't square off with someone. Either you gut them with a ripper in one turn, or their burst fire will do the same to you.

I never played it, but I remember seeing clips of a New Vegas mod that added some sort of charge kick to the game (among other things). Actually looked pretty cool.

He did said it was to prevent someone from easily being the god of war but I think a Big Gun-Small Gun split makes more sense. However, Trap has been split between Explosive and Repair and Explosive is a merger of some Big Gun, some Trap, and some Throw.

Going back to Unarmed, I think that there are many ways to buff it without relying on just exploding fist. Maybe
  • Have it easily accessible like the grenade button
  • Add nonlethal takedown
  • Add grapples (let's ignore Gamebryo's limitations for a while)
  • Merge it with other skills like Athletics or Throw (just testing ideas)

I think the way New Vegas split the weapon skills makes sense when you consider Josh's goal of having similar weapon types for any character level. In FO1 and 2 (esp. 1, I think), Big Guns and Energy Weapons were clearly set up as late game skills. And keeping the number of different weapon skills low is important, of course.

So riot shields are useless then?

Yes but also the one in FO2 because of how poorly scripted it was. I had to prevent the companions from pulling out their guns and shooting the opponent.

That makes sense but Guns and Energy Weapons works too much alike.
I doubt it could stop plasma though
...and? Not everyone is loaded with a Plasma Caster.

You are talking about the Fist of the North Star mod, are you?

All that I'm saying is making Caesar's Legion into a melee focus faction turned out great so I'm not really keen on letting go of the idea just yet.

The prize fighter quest is one of my favorite FO2 quests. Wish the new games had something like it. Someguy 2000's King of the Ring mod is great, altho buggy.
