Josh Sawyer talks New Vegas on IGN unfiltered

That's splitting hairs. Of course they would add their own touch to the game, things they think would work for the better, instead of simply producing an assembly line sequel (which is almost what they did). I don't think Josh means "aimed strictly to these folks and nobody else", but rather aimed primarily to that portion of the audience (which is evident from how the game looks and plays).

It just so happened that a good portion of the original fanbase liked what they got with New Vegas. It felt familiar enough. And of course the additions that appealed were made in hopes they'd work like that.

And it pretty much shows that the basic formula of Fallout 3 isn't that bad and hated, because a lot folks had no problems with it in FNV. It's really just that Fallout 3 is a shitty game.

Yeah, it is very much workable. It needs more work towards the original form than what NV was able to give (not gonna go in detail on that here), but it can produce a good game (better than New Vegas).

I don't believe it'd ever produce a sequel that could be considered "proper", but there is potential for sure.

Still I would much rather see a Fallout on the scope of Fallout 1 and 2, one that combines world spaces with a large overhead map rather than a single major city and the surrounding lands.

Indeed would I, along with all the other gameplay conventions that were lost and could've been conditioned to the new style. New Vegas could have been built for that... but it wasn't (and I don't blame Obsidian for that).

well, NV is kind like that. There´s nothing goin on in the map, only in the hubs. As for the large overhead map, the dlcs kind do that. Then we have the Desert, New Vegas, Zion, Sierra Madre, Big Empty and Divide (unfortunately, not integrated as Fallout 1 or 2 were).

If they had made the Legion encampments on the other side of the River Colorado, it would be yet another locality. Oh well, maybe our selves of a parallel reality played that cut location.

I advanced a little in the game, until Novac. It's ok so far, apart from the fact that traveling is something of a boring chore when there is some distance to do. I didn't use the fast traveling yet as I am building up my character and learn the ropes, but I will sure fast travel sooner than later.

I also managed to get vilified by this legion faction, what can I say, I ran in a bunch of little punks disguised in roman legionaries, in a town they had butchered on the road to Novac.

Maybe they had some reason but their leader didn't make their case well enough, and I was sort of on my teeth from the road. I watched them took off after the talk, then I lifted a few dynamit sticks when they were at some distance, before finishing the survivors in a gun fight. Right after that I ran in a loony that were happy about winning some lottery, I thought it was the same refered by the dead leader of the legion punk squad and so I blew his head off.

Later again, while I was going back to some ranger post near Novac, a bunch of legion killers informed me that I was marked for dead, and boy, was it a fight.(Losted a few times before finding a better strategy) Billie Hollyday were singing and it reminded me of a silly story about how the word 'dowap' was born, except it was a rifle grenade launcher instead of a blade.

It's fun so far, to summarize. I hope it get better with the story, and maybe that is possible to somehow force a truce on the legion, I mean what, I killed a few punks that can't complain about being victims of murder, then defended myself, the 'Caesar' or whoever lead them should congratulate me. (just being a little ironic)

You kill Vulpes, one of the most importants members of CL. It was better if you did not have it.

The assassins will start to appear A LOT. You level up, they get stronger. Good luck.

Oh well, what's done is done and it's hard to feel sorry for Vulpes right now. It seemed he tortured and killed everyone without discrimination, I simply followed his example. Maybe I will get myself a name, as a legion buggyman or something.

Edit, yeah, I have been attacked three time more by legions assassins, though they might start to get pissed off since beside that, I also attacked them again at a place called Nelson after setting a bunch of crucified guys free from their cross. That's a lot of legion's infamy, but I doubt we have been friends anyway. I went back to Primm to fix the Ed-E robot after reaching enough science points, and also recruited the poor sniper guy from Novak, Boone. These two make the occasional legion squad a lot more easy to deal with, especially with my main character who isn't build with combat as a priority. He is getting better now though, level nine and heading to the next lead on the suit fellow and his Khan pals.

Yeah, uh, when you decide to dust Vulpes you're basically saying you have balls of brass and are daring the Legion to fuck your shit (and the assassin squads are NOT a joke at low Clvl).

I personally like Vulpes in a weird way so I generally refrain from killing him.

EDIT: Also, to be fair? Nipton was a godforsaken shithole.

Thinking back on this Vulpes, I can't say he made a strong case on why he and his squad decided this town was worthy of getting butchered. I found the mayor notes after, but it still didn't mean that everyone else had it coming. And the legion appear to kill anyone who is not with them, if I judge by later informations and encounters so far, beside their slavery habits, so they really can't cry if they are the one getting killed.
And all morality aside, my character doesn't 'freeze' in front of a bunch of disguised punks, nor does he spread news of their bullshits because they say so.

So even if I wanted to start over with this first playthrough, which I don't, I would still dynamit mr Vulpes before blowing his legs away.
The rest of his gang want to make a war out of it? That's fine, bring it on, Kaiser.

The Legion tends to destroy towns to send messages, specially to the NCR. Nipton is also a town of prostitutes, gamblers and thieves, people the Legion absolutely hates. It even has Powder Gangers, convicted criminals.

I find that the best way to deal with Vulpes early-level is to gather those powder charges laying around Powder-Ganger camps, as well as a few frag mines on the bridge at Primm (the perk that lets you walk around without setting mines off is a must). Cobb has a single stealth-boy on him, and you'll want to grab that after finishing up ghost-town gunfight. Vulpes always takes the same route as he walks away all smug. A bit too full of himself to notice a fuck-ton of explosives clustered together right in his path--but of course, sneaking away with a stealth-boy means you can get away with it and get no infamy from the affair.

You're going to have to forgive me if I'm wrong, but I feel like you're justifying too much killing the guys when you should not. Killing them is a fully valid option and there is a reason for Vulpes being with the Legion worst armor (Explorer armor) and being accompanied only by recruits. They must be easy to defeat; even by a character like yours, not combat-oriented; because is the perfect oportunity Obsidian finds to introduce the mechanics of hitsquads.

But it would be good to understand one thing in case you don´t know. Due to scheduling issues, most of the Legion's content was cut out. They are an interesting faction, I suggest extracting as much information from them (because there is not much left in the game after the cut :( ) which clearly can not be done if you go out killing everyone in a skirt and football gear.

For example, they do not enslave people because "MUAHAHAHAHA WE ARE SO EVIL", Caesar has a pragmatic reason for this practice.

Also, I'll leave a spoiler here for you to read on another occasion.

Your reason for killing them is just because they massacred Nipton?

Do you know who else goes around slaughtering settlements? The NCR. Hell, Boone was there at the time and you can beat your hat that he also open fire. Are you going to kill them too? ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯

NV is a complex political game (for game standards haha) so I leave here the suggestion of try to interact to the max with all NPCs in all locations. In its launch, it was the game with the greatest number of dialogues of all time.

The Legion enslaves you outright and forces you to believe in their cause. NCR enslaves you by starving you and forcing you to do what they want whether you believe or not. One enslaves women but is loyal to a fault to the Legion ideals. The other is riddled with corruption and doubt.

Welcome to the Grey.

I feel obligated to note that what happened at Nipton was entirely intentional and carried out in a deliberately brutal fashion, whereas that incident was the byproduct of communication failure/possible incompetence or some other fault on the part of NCR command.
