well back when I was a kid I played on the easiest settings obviously, and if memory serves I usually got to the point where alien ships are huge and full of lobstermen

Oh, I thought you were meaning UFO:Enemy Unknown :D TFTD, what with the racially diverse, affirmative-actioned and well-defended alien colonies, with swarms of Lobbies, Tazzies witha sprinkle of Tentaculat, was a nightmare to conquer ;)

Heh that a reason why wife #1 decided to make some distance?

Nah, she got some distance because she wanted to have an affair with my boss.

Oh, sorry for joking with it man.

Shit, no problem whatsoever. It happened over 12 years ago, and since then I met a wonderful woman, got married, a house, and two beautiful little girls I wouldn't trade for anything.

What a coincidence, I started X-Com a few days ago. I'll make good use of this tips, too. :D

By the way, I don't know if it has ever been patched, but UFO Defence had a bug that, whenever you loaded a save, scaled back the difficulty to the lowest setting. The funny part is that when they made the sequel they didn't know of it, and since fans complained that the first game was too easy they made "beginner" as hard as the correct "superhuman" of the previous one.

It wasn't THAT difficult at the lower levels, although a surprise, stray shot from an alien taking out your best, elite troop out of the dark was a pain. A well-equipped party of MC-trained soldiers could really kick some serious gray ass, although I never finished the game at either of the highest levels.

The city terror missions were brutal... especially when you basically HAVE to do them, as ignoring them damages your funding too much.... so many times I've sent my boys to be slaughtered just to keep that US funding alive.

Also, I love the "bay doors open and a grenade flies in" wiping the party that occurs from time to time.

That's why I always save a moment before the Skyranger reaches the UFO/city/enemy base and reload if a scenario with a bunch of enemies are right in front of the ship.

Me too. I have one dedicated pre-mission save, one dedicated start of turn save and one about-to-make-a-pathetically-easy-shot-but-probably-gonna-miss save.

Also, god damn it, I bought TFTD on steam yesterday... This time I'll get past that damn research bug!

No idea, but I found a tool online that lets you get past it. I know the four most common glitching techs, and if it still bugs out, you can download the data the game needs for you to be able to research a tech, if I understand it correctly.

Here's the solution, though I haven't tried it out myself. This of course contains major spoilers (if you can call it that) for Terror from the Deep, for those who have not played it.

cool, that looks really useful! thanks for sharing. let me know if it works.

Research elerium 115 and get that power armor! Also, lazer weapons (later alien weapons) and forget about the tanks.

UFO: Enemy unknown (or ufo defense) is the only game worth playing. Terror from the deep is barely OK, but the rest is pure crapola.

This is all my opinion btw.

TFTD was quite good. Kept the core gameplay of the first game, with a new setting that offered enough differences and challenges to make it worth playing.
