Mr. Teatime informed me that he have interviewed none other then Leonard Boyarsky of Troika, here's a snibblet:
Q: On the subject of Fallout 3, how do you feel about Bethesda getting the license, and what direction do you see them taking the series?

A: To be perfectly honest, I was extremely disappointed that we did not get the chance to make the next Fallout game. This has nothing to do with Bethesda, it’s just that we’ve always felt that Fallout was ours and it was just a technicality that Interplay happened to own it. It sort of felt as if our child had been sold to the highest bidder, and we had to just sit by and watch. As far as where they will take it, you’d have to ask them that. Since I have absolutely no idea what their plans are, I can’t comment on whether I think they’re going in the right direction with it or not.
Too bad they did loose the bidding round..

we were given relatively free reign on Arcanum, and Sierra actually gave us a lot of extra time on it as well. Not enough, as it turns out, but a big part of that was that we made such a huge, complex game with only ten people.

Ten people? Color me impressed.

After seeing Chris Glenn's past work, I crave new concept art like a crack addict craves rocks. So, you know, show some fucking love you soulless publishers.

Of course, next time I get crap from any of you losers I’m going to get all pissy and sarcastic and write a page long forum entry about how you all suck. Just so you know.

Oh man, that would be awesome. Think of all the gloating you could do: "That's right, guys, Leondard Boyarsky made fun of me!" But I bet with all the rancorous Fallout fans, this would lead to an epic flame-fest of Derek Smart proportions.

our giant project with unlimited funds dream is to have a game where you explore first person (or maybe over the shoulder, haven’t decided yet) and then go to “isometric” third person for combat.
Realms of Arkania did it so long ago.. in good old 2D. It sounds Leonard's dream game is pretty close to my dream crpg, too. :D

i guess troika didn't want it bad enough... they or obsidian were meant to make it, and i can't believe the licence, which should be priceless in their eyes, was THAT expensive... so they would spend a couple of extra bucks.. big deal... they would get their "baby" this way. bah.

Chris Glenn doesn't work at Troika anymore. The old concept art was for a completely different sci-fi project, from which they re-used the main character model for the tech demo screenshots.

Dang dude, in the interview he says Troika isnt self funded, the only way they work on projects is via money coming from publishers, and they couldnt find a publisher willing to throw that kinda cash at a "risky project" so there is no way they could just plunk down cash they dont have...

Yes, I recall them saying that it was a bad idea. I was mostly speaking in general terms of Glenn's work, like his designs for TOEE. But, since he doesn't work there anymore, oh well.

I still need concept art.

It should also be noted that Bethesda is both a developer and publisher. This is how they were able to shell out the big bucks, and how they were able to continue making niche games in the Elder Scrolls series.

I'm not sure though. Is Zenimax, Bethesda's publisher, or distributor?

Well look at the bright side....in all likelihood we're still going to get a PA RPG, just the way we like them, and the developers don't have to be constrained by the already existing Fallout lore. Not ideally what we want but its the next best damn thing. Might even turn out better than Fallout 3, had Troika done it....no pressure.

With the proverbial wolves at Herve's door, how much does the Fallout license cost these days?

*counts loose change*

I hope they get a chance to take their own PA RPG to places that they may have taken FO3 to, had they gotten the license.

My sentiments exactly. I'm honestly more enticed with Troika's future endeavors than Bethesda's, even IF they have the Fallout licence. Developer potential > Intellectual property sums it up rather well.

Holy jesus people, get your facts straight.

Yeah, Troika tought that too, and bethesda came in with a large pile of money, and took it. (I don't know how the others feel about this, but i think that counts positively towards bethesda)

Not really, It's probably gonna be real time with pause for commercial reasons. And seeing the way troika handled a hybrid system in arcanum... well, we can only hope they learned.

oh, and i guess i gotta congratulate teatime on this, huh?

You can throw all the money in the world at a bad game, it will still suck. Go ask John Romero, he learned that the hard way.

I suppose Bethesda could pull a rabbit out of whatever headgear's in fashion these days, but after playing Morrowind I doubt they have the talent to do so.

Here's to hoping though.
