i am shocked that nobody has brought this up yet, so here it is.

it seems that richard garriot is making another real foray into computer gaming and has abandoned his android/ios ultima projects and is instead going full on into PC gaming in attempt to blend the original single player experience with an online component.

it seems its going to be a single player game primarily with online ability to "bring in" stuff from your friends and such ( if you link your online accounts such as twitter and facebook ) to bring their content/play into your game. sort of akin to what spore did.

its going to have the "2 level map" system with an overland and up-close options. overland for travel, with instance maps in first person for towns/encounters.

if you are unfamiliar with older ultimas and how that was done, think fallout. where do you think they got the ideas for fallout? it was older ultimas.

they are planning a 5 year "campaign" with a chapter a year with the first campaign called "shroud of the avatar" and are planning a new "expansion" of the land/options every year.

i am going to wait a bit before i think of contributing to this kickstarter due to my experience with ultima 8 and ultima 9 losing something in the "technology advancement" with him, but i may end up backing it later. plus you dont get the physical box with the trinkets until like $100+ pledges.

Since he is very infamous for betray NC for my country and famous for making great games, I'm confused to appraise this good or bad.

$40 for a Kickstarter game, I think he is overcharging.

Hrmm, it's a lot pricier than past kickstarters. Even the 30 dollar digital copy is limited.

While the game sounds interesting, I worry that his ambition is going to get the best of him.

It's Lord British. He made my favorite game of all time Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. So I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and threw 25 bucks in his direction. I'm sure it'll be worth it. :)

(and again, if I had a job, I'd be throwing more money at it, but I can't afford it)

He's been to Space, you know. So he must know exactly what he's doing.

Hey I think $25 is a fair price, too bad Lord British doesn't agree.

Yeah, looks like it went up $5 because they sold out of the $25 tier. The Torment kickstarter did that too. Annoying. >_<

Not as exciting to me as WL2 or Torment, but yeah, I backed it. :)

To be fair, it's been quite a while since he did anything worth noting, and even the best game designers have their own share of embarrassing failures, so if you aren't completely convinced by the pitch, you should probably be aware that you're gambling your own money. Which I mean.. if you consider the sum you're putting in disposable, it's fine, not going to police how you spend your money obviously.

I think the screenshots look pretty ugly. 3D engines like that just ... dont work for me.

I ehm....I really don't see the appeal in this. Unless you like Ultima Online, I guess, but he's not pitching anything like the original Ultima games. He's pitching an MMO.

And I don't 'get' his pitch anyway. Every object is interactive? You get to buy houses? What is this, The Sims?

Every object in Fallout is "interactive" - you can get a text description of it.

What he's showing is basically a prototype as far as I understand, with placeholder art. Otherwise, yeah, it's pretty damn ugly.

As for the pitch: it sounds to me like he wants to create a hybrid between the later Ultima titles and Ultima Online. Could be good, could be a complete disaster, though it has little appeal for me personally, so I won't be backing.

Im not sure about this one. Loved Ultima Online but Ultima IX: Ascension was just an embarassment. Didnt finish that game.

it is not a MMO. you did not pay attention

it is a single player game with an online social component. if you link your social accounts like twitter/facebook/whatever their stuff will show up in your game, and if you are playing at the same time, can join each others game.

System seems pretty similar to dark souls.

Anyway, the pitch looks like shit, so I won't bother.

Some of it actually sounds interesting to me. I don't really understand how the online aspect of the game is going to work, though. It sounds like there's going to be a persistent online world, but they also claim it's not a MMOG. Dozens of city homesteads being available sounds like a huge number if it's just me and my buddies running around.
