Fallout 2 mod Megamod version 2.46 Bug Reports and Suggestions - Closed

You don't need to take any screen shots during those random encounters. The last time the proto files got corrupted, just hovering the pointer over the critter caused the game to crash. I just wanted to see if that is when the crashes were occurring with you and, if so, on which critters.

OK, I hovered the mouse over a small rad scorpion and the game crashed out but when I encountered them in the Temple of Trials they didn't. I think the ones inside a random encounter cave didn't crash either; just the ones outside.

Should I copy all the rad scorpion prot files from the original into the folder (they are all numbers so it's not easy to tell the correct ones)? Does MegaMod modify them? I had already made sure that I copied MegaMod and the last patch in and made sure they were all read-only.

----------

Jennings Farm.

It's well written area. The NPC's quickly loot after the battle and keep their faces towards you so you can't easily use Steal skill unless successful hiding. The kids say interesting things and the NPC's are busy doing their farming chores. The barn looks very realistic and there seems to be enough rooms for everyone. I only ran into two minor issues here.

1) During the conversation with the patriarch you need to claim you never heard of the Glow (1st choice, 2nd choice is where you brag you pissed into the Glow which irritates him), but in the Temple of Trial riddles, one of the correct answers is that the Vault Dweller Ancestor went to the Glow, so you know about the Glow. Jenning's Farm must be written for the original script.

2) In the gun battle, one of the sons gets shot and then runs right into Metzger's gang and get's slaughtered instead of running away into the safety of the farm. Is that intentional? His wife comes out and sobs over his body (well written area). If he stands his ground or runs into the farm, he'd get shot and killed anyway cause the gang leader seems to have a scoped rifle.

It would be cool if the farmer's daughters would sleep with a sexy male character, as the old joke goes about the farmer's daughter. I looked at her dialog file and there's no interactives, just over-the-head phrases. Guess that's a bit much work on such an old game unless FO4 has brought a bunch of new interest.

I will check into the problem with Smitty.
I think Smitty not talking might have to do with the beggar, who is just up and to the right near Laura's gang house, firing up his begging script. Smitty refused to talk to me and then a few seconds later that beggar script started even though I was all the way down in Smitty's house (about 30 hexes from the beggar).

@VonZorch
Eventually I will add the hero appearance mod. But, I have a lot of things I want to add or fix before I get to that one, though.

Regarding the radscorpions: check your data/proto/critters folder and look at the information for the scorpions. They haven't been modified since June 23, 2006. If the dates on yours are different, then take them out of the archive and re-add them and everything should be fine. The radscorpions are proto numbers 0000005.pro and 0000006.pro. If the ones you have in your game folder have the same information, then there is something else crazy going on...

Regarding the farm:
The Jennings farm and the riddle section were both written by the same group (TeamX, as part of the New Vision mod). I never really considered the comment about not knowing about the Glow any real disparity. I mean, it could indeed be that whoever worked on one section did not really talk to the person responsible for the other location (therefore making it a bug). But, I always just took it to mean that the player character did not want to divulge that he knew about the location to some guy he just met. Hmmm... Maybe I will change the dialog just a bit... something like:
I came from a small village to the north. I've seen many places, but never heard of - what did you call it? The Glow? Nope. Not at all. No, sir.

That way, the player can deny knowing about it and yet, it is obvious to the player that the character does know of the location (despite his subtle or not-so-subtle sarcasm, depending on how the player interprets that line).

As for where the farmers run when they are wounded, I don't know if they always run into Metzger's group. It is possible. I'd really need to take apart the script and look at it, though. Could be that they just run in a random direction. (But, I do remember that they are always a pain: I try to save all of them by using stimpacks on them and trying to get Metzger's people to attack my party.) I think that, because of the location of the fight, they are just trying to retreat to the nearest map edge. Unfortunately, that takes them into the attacking group.

Regarding the farmer's daughter: Very easy to implement. But, I think that it would only be an option if you are able to prevent the family from moving.

Regarding the beggar: I doubt he has anything to do with Smitty. But, that is one random script I do remember. He really is set to fire if he is facing the direction of the player and he is really far away. At least, he was in the original. Maybe it has been changed in the RP and will therefore be changed in mine... eventually.

After I posted my message I encountered Cannibals vs Lil Scorpions and no problems crashing like the last time I encountered them vs Farmers. The files are 6/22/2006, so the crash2desktop mystery still alive.

The actual location of it doesn't appear to be a well guarded secret and it's lethal radiation levels would be a deterrent to all but the new ghoulish residents of Dayglow or people with Rad-X or Advanced Power Armor. Of course none of this would be known to Arroyo and so they might very well consider it a secret location to be guarded.

As for where the farmers run when they are wounded, I don't know if they always run into Metzger's group.
This play through they did. I tried the scenario about 8 times and every time he ran up and left. I didn't have the random encounters of the last game where my party all had leather armor by the time reaching Jennings so it was hard enough to not get killed myself than protect the farmers.
I tried 7 more times while writing this post and most every time the center guard shoots (Luke?) the farmer for 31 to 39 points and I rush over and use a stim pak after he runs up and left, then the female guard kills him on her turn. I can't seem to save him on this game. If he only gets hit for 23 points then stimpak him to full but all the next three shots are at him and he dies. The only way to save him is to draw aggro by attacking all the ones with remaining moves (molotov cocktail, fast shot and 3 plant spikes) and surviving their shots and hoping he only gets hit the one time for less than 25. I got him to survive a couple times, once with the molotov placed in the center hitting all Metzger's peeps and the other I hit 3 of them with the can goods found in the Temple of Trials. They all went after me and I moved deep into the farm and they got shot down by the farmers.
I didn't have so much trouble last game but that character had fast shot, envenomed throwing knives and better armor.

Regarding the farmer's daughter: Very easy to implement. But, I think that it would only be an option if you are able to prevent the family from moving.
There's a time period before speaking to the father where you can roam around the farm and talk to the daughters and after the fight is over you can go speak to them and they [smile] and are grateful. That seems the right time to make a move.
They'll stay if all the farmers survive? My speech is only 45% on this character. Even if they all live the only dialog option is "I think you all need to leave this place."

Regarding the beggar: I doubt he has anything to do with Smitty.

Smitty can always be fixed by going off the map to west Den then coming back. I thought the problem was just not fetching him his meal last game but this game, with the meal, he wouldn't talk to me till I left the map and came back.

With a little luck I can get through that battle at the farm without losing anyone. It is very possible. It is not scripted that anyone should die. What works for me is, right when they are showing up, after the conversation with the father, I run out to meet them. I get right up in the area where Metzger's people are, with Sulik and Klint. By hitting all of them, their attention is focused on you and your party, and not as much on the farmers. I still end up usually having to use some stimpacks on the farmers, though.

And, speech is not a factor really in getting them to stay. Neither is killing all of Metzger's people while taking no casualties. The way to make them stay, I believe, is by only letting them know that Metzger is dead.

Klint and Sulik are always 2 rounds away at the farm house when it starts. I thought they were combat ordered to stay close.

If I didn't kill Metzger before the Jennings Farm and completed that battle, is it still possible to kill Metzger later and talk to Will Jennings and have them stay?

a) Will they actually show up in Klameth with dialog there?
b) I had the same question about Josie and Leyla; will they be found in Klamath if you take the right actions in Colly with them?

Colly

Another well written area. Just a few spelling and formatting errors. I realize most all the improper spelling is on purpose for their dialect but a few things are just errors like Grizzly saying 'no' instead of 'now' and Rafael's sentences running together with no spaces between the final period of a sentence and the first letter of the next.
I can easily fix those if you want the help.

Speaking of Rafael:
1) Is his gun locatable?
2) Can you find pieces of Sammy Christal's armor?
3) Does Sammy's wife, Miranda Hook, exist in game and can you find her?
4) Same question for Ken Patten, Sammy's friend.

Looks like you answered this in another thread.
5) Where is this Cyrus dude that bar patron and some other NPC's mention?

I ask because the Megamod Guide at the Wiki doesn't mention any of those things so I figure they are unimplemented and probably shouldn't waste my time looking.

The Megamod walk through mentions something about Josie saying Humphrey wants his alcohol still repaired but I went through that dialog several times and didn't find that. If it's no longer I could remove mention from the Wiki and add that Miranda and Ken are not implemented.

OK, the game crashed again. This time in small rad scorpions vs golden geckos.

I fought them for 10 minutes and hovered my cursor over both proto types without problems and had most of them killed.
Eventually it crashed when I placed the red targeting cursor over a small radscorpion to hit them with brass knuckles.

For the farm, either adjust their settings or run into the farm area and talk to the father. By the time the fight starts, they could already be in position.
a) No
b) No

Colly:
1) No
2) No
5) lots of characters mentioned, but there is no hidden location where they are located.

The crashes you are getting make no sense to me. Do the crashes ever happen anywhere else, or just random encounters? Is it only with radscorpion encounters? I guess the best way to test it would be to delete 0000005.pro and 0000006.pro from the data/proto/critters folder. That will cause your game to default to the scorpions from an unmodded game in random encounters. However, this may cause stability issues with maps where scorpions have been placed already, such as the Temple, Destroyed Lab, Scorpion's Square, and the cattle rustling quest.

Sorry, my comment in the bottom of this message sounded like i was impatient and wanted you to rush, i did not mean to sound that way

i do wonder if you have thou, therefore i leave the question in this message on the thread
haz Marcus been fixed in anyway yet?

@Mikael Elofsson

No worries. I take no offense. I made the fix and just got sidetracked onto other fixes/additions.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/745r2f4454bvpqq/quickfix.7z

There are four files in the archive.
Place hcmarcus.int and hcchad.int into your data/scripts folder. Just place the two .msg files into your data/text/English/dialog folder. I never did test it, but I did see a few problems that needed correcting. Please let me know if this works.

It's only random encounters. Main areas have never crashed.
I can't remember every crash but the first character I tried playing (total of 3 since I came back about 1 month ago) had almost every random encounter near Arroyo that involved a plant of dark spirit crash. I remember these because I was trying to gather up a bunch of plant spikes for envenomed spears and throwing knives and it was really angering. I think a Ambush by Kaga crashed once.

Try removing those two files and let me know if the game still crashes. Also, do you have Vic in your party? If so, what is the date of that script (dcvic.int)? There was a version of Vic (maybe 2.44 that was causing crashes in all sorts of locations).

Nevermind about Vic. You said the crashes only happen in random encounters...
Did you change any settings in combatdamage or criticaloverrides? Did you add anything to the game other than the latest MM? Or using any of Nirran's mods?

Marcus complains about to many people now and Chad cannot be talked too at all

Well, do you have too many people in your party?
Also, did you just try to pick up right where you left off? You might need to go to a game before you spoke to them about the various quests.

got the perk to let me have unlimited party, can ditch and try again...
only save before that is.... one from 2001.... lol

Ugh. Ok. Please let me know. I think I got the problem fixed. Then again... who knows? I really need to take apart all the scripts in Broken Hills to really be sure.

That's why I said it might require going back to a time before you entered Broken Hills and started the missions. Certain variables need to be set during the conversations that may not be set by changing the script midway through. I just don't know for certain.

Do you know who else is involved with the Chad skimming quest other than Marcus and Chad? Any items involved?

I'll take apart the Marcus script again and try to find out why cult of personality isn't working on him.

only marcus and chad, marcus told me about Chad being suspected, i asked him, nada said at all about it, the loop i told about happened only... if i'm to get a earlier save, i'll take about... three weeks to play up to Broken hills? unless i cheat my way there... should i do that to try it?

No, don't do that. The fact that you said Chad doesn't talk to you at all really is disturbing, anyway. Gonna be pretty busy at work this week, so it is gonna take several days before I can take apart the script again and look into it. But I will check it out.

Edit: I just read the walkthrough for that quest. It involves another NPC, an item, and checking a location. There are other scripts involved. No, this is not a quick fix. I can't get to that just yet, or it will mess up my system. So, my advice to you is to open the archive from the MM full repack and add the hcmarcus.int from there back into your Fallout directory. That vesion hadn't been updated since 2011... well before I put in any RP additions.
