MIB,

I have realized that the above sentence would probably be clearest in a readme file if rewritten this way:

If you are using Winrar, when you LOOK AT your proto files to see if they are read only, they will say read only. Don't believe them. Uncheck all the read only boxes. Then, check them again.

Hi,
I tried uninstalling (+deleting registry keys) +reinstalling on another partition, to no avail.

I did some research

And renamed the fallout2/data/data folder, to something else.

There isn't supposed to be a data/data folder is there?

Since after the rename, it works.

Well then, what the hell.
The game works otherwise fine, yet the save feature (which, in my opinion is rather useful) complains something, when I have the data/data where it should be. Most strange.

Oh shit.

I just noticed, I can't even enter the temple, (or I can) but it get's all messed up when I do, there must be something wrong with the mapfile. I seem to have the recollection that I have read about such occurrance, but I can't find that mention, now that I'd need it.

@Misteryo: Sure, I'll rephrase that.

What the hell kind of research did you do!? Nowhere could you have possibly read that you should rename the data folder. Installing to a new location by giving it a different name at the time of installation is not the same as just renaming a folder. As for the error upon entering the temple that you can't find, it was just mentioned (again) on the previous page! I wrote readme files for a reason (and I think your error is related to what I put in bold above...something I specifically mentioned.) This thread also exists for a reason, and that reason is not to repeat the same stuff over and over again. Ah, forget it. I can't help you with your problem. Are you and WarriorSoul related?

Must be the same person, cmon guys, every 2 pages has some explanations about how you fix that, GOD DAMMIT!

@heodien: Did you ever get your old games to load after removing that vault13.gam file from the maps folder? Another thing to check: is the misplaced vault13.gam file (the one in the maps folder) the same as the one in the data folder?

Nope Ive checked through the pages and have done all the things mentioned above. You can flame me if you want I was only asking because I couldnt find answers anywhere else. Just wondered if the problem I was having was related to something directly. But I guess not.
I checked the readme files and it didnt mention anything about the crash I described haha but oh well.
Basically Ill just assume it just won't work for me!

So, your 'crash' wasn't mentioned, eh? It is in this thread several times, and I just got tired of answering the same thing.

From my 2.1 readme file:

"Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Install version of Fallout 2 that takes up the largest amount of space (Humongous).
2. Make sure you do not have a patch000.dat file in your main Fallout 2 directory. Either delete or rename it.
3. Make sure the entire proto folder is set to read-only
4. Make sure the individual items and critters inside the proto folder are set to read-only
5. Install the game and mod to a new location. Do not use the location you usually use. Pick a new folder entirely or, better yet, a different partition of your hard drive.
6. If you are going to uninstall a Fallout 2 game, you should also restart your computer after doing so, before reinstalling the game again and adding the Megamod.
7. If you have installed the game many times on your computer and removed them, it might be a good idea to also run a registry cleaner.

If you see something like a map that doesn't load up, i.e. a black screen in the Temple of Trials and just a bunch of 'ghosts' where the character and red hex move, I don't want to hear about it. It is not working. Uninstall that game, delete everything, and start over, following the tips above. If it still doesn't work, well then, I guess the Fates have decided that you just weren't meant to play this mod."

Final tip: Read in this thread what Dude101 said about unmarking/marking files as read-only.

I messed around with this thing for a few days and got nothing but the black screen and such. I did reinstalls and tried different patches. Nothing. S I read this thread to figure out WTF why this wouldn't work. After reading this post I decided to do every thing exactly like it was posted. I deleted anything FO, cleared the registry, reinstalled and added the 3 sets of MI88 mods. What do you know it worked like a charm. I think clearing the registry had more to do with it than anything as I've deleted and installed to different harddisk before. So if any one else has this problem besure to do exactly as the post above says. :P

umm.. i got one big broblem with this mod pack.. I can't use any sort type rifle.. only melee and pistols.. :[

I had this problem too, and I thought I had bugged something. Then I redid a part later on, and realised I had not paid attention to something. When you work for Ma Dunton, the last time you get your arm broken. Arm broken means two handed weapons don't work. Thats your problem, get your arm fixed.

Hmm, let me rephrase that, I made some experimentation, as to which file or folder was the cause of this (rather mysterious) error. What I noticed was, that renaming the data/data helped with the saving error. Dude, I was just trying to tell you as much as I knew.

But you're right, I didn't read that anywhere.'

Do you suppose this might have anything to do with the contents of the data/data folder? (as might be deducted from what I found out)

The thing I don't understand, is that how on earth could that effect nothing else, but writing savegames.

I guess I gotta play this hardcore way (as soon as I get the temple fixed) IOW keep my computer on until I've finished playing

Thanks for the pointer regarding the arroyo temple problem.

Actually, deleting the Megamod data/data folder will have many more consequences than just saving games. Without the Data/data folder from the Megamod there, the game instead reads from the Data folder that is inside the master.dat file. This means that your game would not have the extra party members, extra cities, modified worldmap, quest log, and lots of other differences. So, as is already posted, go through the above and the readme files. Everything you need is there.

I had it working but couldn't save. I remembered reading that you need to delete or rename the patch000 file in the main fallout dir. Once I did that the save game function worked as well. Be sure to remember clear the registry and delete/rename the patch000 file to get this working right if you are getting the black screen in the temple and the save game is not saving.

I played the games F1/F2 through with out mods and I am now going through F2 with this MIB88 mod set and I must say it's pretty cool. It almost makes it a new game. Thanks for putting these mods together in a pack and making some of them work right (Friendly Klint comes to mind). MIB88.

I actually managed to get Friendly Klint to work when I played without the MIB88 mod collection and it worked. He would join you and you could give him armor/ weapons but the frak wouldn't level up and by the time I was in Narrvo or the Enclave it was like bringing a 3yr old along. Couldn't hit shit with any weapon and if you farted to loud he would be dead. Yes even in power armor! This was almost as bad as Maria. She would die if you got hit and the over spray somehow got near her with her 35hp! sheez. Now when I put power armor on Klint and he's a 300hp beast! This should rock! Thanx again.

BTW if anyone cares my nic comes from Wasteland. One of my first rpg true loves. Played it on a c64.

Yeah, it is sometimes something pretty easy that people miss and is the reason why the game doesn't work right.

And making it seem like a whole new game was my intent. The authors of the mods out there had done a pretty good job with their work. (Just as a note, though, Dodgerovitch's Friendly Klint mod works fine by itself originally...as long as you set the proto files to read only, thus keeping them from being deleted. This was something I had forgotten in the early version of my mod, causing him not to work right.)

Anyway, I know I originally said that I would have an update out by now. Unfortunately, real world issues and even a lack of motivation (probably in part triggered by real world issues) have been conspiring against me. But I am still working on this. Also, because of Dude101's efforts in recruiting and organizing Russian to English translators, expect to see elements of Alternative Life and Dominion in the Megamod, as they have made significant progress in their work.

I think one of the main problems is that people are renaming the proto files of critters and items not the individual files themselves to read only .
Thats what got it to initially work for me.

Okay I got that the cold hearts quests start repeating themselves, so I guess I'll never access the locked room in the basement in this release... too bad... wish I didn't kill metzger too so I could have kidnapped his mom...

What was the last quest you did? And do you know what it was that triggered the repeat (ex. - who did you last talk to)?

Yea I just finished the EB quest for mickey at broken hills and met up with jimmy on my way to Reno after to salvatore gun stash... alr did all of jack's quests and turned down on his san fran info... so I head back to EB and he gives me metzger's quest but I killed metzger alr so he says he's done. Not sure if I talked to Fence or EB first but at this point fence tells me to finish up EB's and Jack's quests, since I missed out on Metzger EB says he's done, Jack says he's done, but Fence insists I aint done with EB. So I talk to EB again and he gives me Tubby all over again.

And since the script doesn't happen twice this is the end of the cold hearts quests:) at least for this game...

Ah, easy enough fix then. I will alter Fence's and Bob's scripts to account for Metzger's death.

Bugs I've found so far:

One that really needs to be addressed:

In the Temple of Trials, I picked up the heavy wall stone, put it into my hands, closed the inventory screen, and the game crashed. My guess is that it had a problem displaying the icon in my hands, but I really don't know what caused it.

the others are all really mild in comparison:

In random encounters with tribals early in the game near Arroyo, I killed six people armed with spears and knives, and only 1 dropped a knife, no one else dropped anything. I forget what the encounter was called, but it was the first I had.

In the player's own dialogue, my character said "Balthus" instead of Balthas when talking to Balthas. I think it was after I rescued Johnny.

in random encounters with robbers using the AK-198 (FN-FAL replacement rifle), characters drop .308 ammo. They do have the proper ammo in their guns while fighting.

In Klamath, while playing poker, I had a straight flush but the game reported it as a "royal flush"

Thanks for the list. Now:

1. I have not been able to reproduce this crash.
2. Weapons don't usually disappear from corpses unless specifically coded to do so (like with TeamX's Jenning's Farm encounter). Either they all didn't have weapons or the original creators designed this encounter to happen that way. What encounter was it? Outcasts? Cannibals?
3. Corrected.
4. Corrected.
5. Corrected. The game doesn't differentiate between a straight flush and a royal flush. Since a royal flush is a type of straight flush, I have changed it to 'straight flush'.
