New Counter-Strike is coming on Steam in "early 2012".

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

Consolitis at work...

I think the name is pretty good.

CS:GO

Like CS:GO AWAY or something.

Seriously. There was only one good CS. And that was before Valve go its hands on it.

I still hate them and will always hate them for destroying Day of Defeat.

Bbbut Half life!

Never liked Counter Strike but watched them destroy Day of Defeat one release at a time. Guessing the new game will be closer to "Counter Strike: Modern Warfare".

Counter Strike 1.6 is nearly a national sport among youths in Serbia.
I'm not a big player or anything, and I don't really give a shit about GO getting released, since 1.6 will live on.
Still, I'm annoyed that this legendary game will get a bastard successor, one unworthy the crown of its father.
Just another testimony to the stupidity of modern gaming.

Yeah, CS1.5 was the one good one. 1.6 still pretty good. Still play it with my friends every once in a while and it's still good. CS:S was bearable but not as good. CS as a console port? Screw that noise.

I still remember all that stuff they mentioned. They will not release DoDS before it has the same quality like DoD. And everything will be great and yada yada. Now the game is missing TONS of content old DoD had like the whole British forces and their weapons. The gameplay in DoDS is MUCH faster then DoD it feels like quacke on steroids. They replaced the meele action of the rifles with some "iron sight" (?). I mean wtf. DoD was already a damn fast arcade shooter. Why in hell would someone give it "iron sights" ? Not to mention the visuals in DoDS dont look that great. It feels very much like counter strike source (same stiff shit animations ...) and the models of teh weapons look pretty ugly.

The only good game in my eyes was Half Life 1 by valve. Anything else they get their hands on always tourns out to be mediocre.

Well, I'm quite excited, but you guys seem a bit pissed, let's not jump to conclusions, we'll just have to wait and see for gameplay

Modern Warfare like gameplay= >:(

Fun addictive gameplay= :D

What did they do to it? I play DoD:S often but haven't played the original in years.

Well hopefully it's not going to be as bad as Counter Strike: Condition Zero.

It's coming out for consoles.

Auto-heal, idiotic weapons, shitty online organisation and most likely perks and other stuff.

What's good about that?

well as said. They changed much in the flow of the gameplay DoD was for example a bit "slower" in the movements. It was still quite fast for a shooter though.

It had more maps and weapons. DoD:S has only the US and Germans. DoD had as well the British and their weapons like the Enfield Rifle or the Bren Machinegun. Not to mention the Germans and US had more access to weapons. The Germans had the MG34 and G43 and the FG42 with and without scope the US had the Greace Gun. But as said the worst change was the gameplay. Riflemen had in DoD a bayonet and meele function. In DoD:S this was replaced with the "iron sight". And the gameplay was now MUCH faster (to fast for my taste).

It was on the decline starting at DOD 3.1 beta. Every subsequent release slowed down the gameplay and removed a lot of features in the game that separated good players from great players, like gun accuracy and wall shooting. DOD retail (pre-source) was still acceptable and continued to have a competitive community. DOD: Source was the end of it. Became practically unplayable from a competitive stand point. The addition of iron sights, removing the ability to "insta-scope" (being unable to physically pull the trigger for a whole second), how grenade explosions affect sight, etc.

They tried too hard to make it 'realistic' when realistic was never achievable. DoD was always an arcade-y kind of shooter.

Ah, I see. While I do enjoy DoD:S I really do miss the weapon selection and the bayonets.
Iron sighting is kinda pointless in DoD:S though as rifles are so accurate it's better to run and gun with them.

Iron sights are useless in close quater combat, in maps such as dod_strand it's a very useful function. You can also pick off snipers that are well hidden (granted you do that very fast  ).

Somewhat different and better than the rest, but still has some classic problems of consolitis. Mainly the auto heal, which is (in my humble opinion) the most idiotic thing to appear in video games, or at least shooters.

I personally haven't played it much, because I was annoyed with the reasons above, but it is better than the rest, like I've said. However, can't match original Counter Strike. Few games can.
