New Face for Bioshock

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
The fansite Bioshock Nation has announced that Game Informer has done an exclusive on Irrational Games's Bioshock, which is the spiritual successor to System Shock 2, if the naming convention didn't give it away already. :)

Details from someone who has flipped through the magazine:<blockquote>"- Core gameplay centered on player choice and customization

- Game takes place in the early 60s

- Developer's main goal is total immersion in the story

- You wake up in the ocean surrounded by debris and your first goal is survival

- Something about creatures in the ocean discovered by scientists

- "We're creating a world for to be in. What you do is up to you, and you have to live with your choices."

- One of your skills is agility and it makes you run faster

- Most upgrades will affect weapons

- You can create weapons and items

- You can hack stuff by being an engineer

- A walkthrough is useless - you take the game where you want it to go (Sounds really open ended)

- BioShock holds many mysteries

- Xbox 360 and PC - O N L Y" </blockquote>A long time ago Bioshock was supposed to take place in an abandoned Nazi research facility that was discovered in the present day, which was overrun by mutant creatures. That was scrapped, however, in favor of the new setting.

Intended to be a Capitalistic utopia, the genetic research that went on there ended up causing more harm than its initial good, and everything besides the diving suit-like robots has been turned into genetic freaks by a substance referred to as Adam. Survivors from the founding of the city wear masks to hide their disfigurements, and one of the choices the player character has to make throughout the game is whether or not to augment himself with Adam in order to survive.

Bioshock will feature a fittingly depressing and bleak game world, filled with art direction resembling a type of 50's future vision coupled with early nuclear age architectural motifs. It's scheduled for an early release in 2007 with the PC release following shortly behind the Xbox.

Also on Bioshock Nation's current update is a list of recently released Bioshock screenshots.

Besides Gothic 3 this is the game I'm most looking forward too for the near future. Everything I've seen and heard about it so far is great, and the fact that it's the System Shock 2 team making it gives me hope that even if they can't deliver on everything it will be a great game anyway.

Congrats on your first news post too, Brady.

I hope that the user interface will be not be overly simplified in the PC version. Or perhaps Irrational have created an interface that works well for both the console and the PC. Maybe we will find out about that in the coming screenshots.

I really like what Irrational have been doing in the meantime with Freedom Force. They seem to be able to put all the peices of the puzzle together quite well to make the total package.

I posted a topic on this in the General Gaming Discussion. I'm glad to see someone do this in the news though since it is very relevant to the type of games we all enjoy.

Nice Bradylama.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Thats what people said about Oblivion

Im going to go on the defensive position on this one. Like Egis said, sounds too good to be true.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this game is going to kick Fallout 3's backside. The main reason being that these people have a proven track record of creating very good, immersive, emergent gameplay, whereas BethSoft does not.

System Shock 2 had some of the spookiest elements of any game I ever played (great sound!) so I'm really looking forward to this one. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

It all sounds good, but the game being developed for a console as well the PC makes me a bit nervous about BioShock's prospects.

Congratulations on your first news post, welcome to the Brotherhood.

Having a cross-platform interface isn't ultimately too detrimental so long as the game design remains solid.

Oblivion's Xbox concessions were dissapointing, but what ultimately hampers the game was its design. Cross-platform releases don't default to the implementation of topical dialogue.

Irrational has a proven track record when it comes to good game design, and unlike Bethesda, they've demonstrated it recently with the Freedom Force games.

Cross platform is new territory for the company, but I doubt it'll ruin the overall experience.

I imagine that was an overstated example of enemy presence. One of the most visible character dichotomies in Bioshock occurs between Protectors and Gatherers. The Protectors are the diving-suit robots that you see everywhere, and their purpose is to protect the Gatherers. Gatherers are the creepy little children you see, and they go around devouring corpses in order to refine the Adam in their digestive system. Gatherers will piggyback on Protectors, walk hand-in-hand or follow close behind.

Since they're constantly walking around looking for corpses, their position in the gameworld at any one time is indeterminable, and in that regard a walkthrough would be useless.

A walkthrough could still provide enemy strategies, item locations, and quest criteria, though.
