n other words, despite the utter fiasco its PC copy-protection scheme has been so far, that sucker is here to stay, so get used to playing their games with an always-on Internet connection

Pretty sure it's been a roaring success from Ubisoft's perspective. It took a long time to fully crack, and was thus a success as a DRM.
The number of buyers gained was probably offset by the number of buyers lost due to DRM.

Also, now that they've figured out how to create a server emulator for it; the next game that uses that DRM is going to be cracked infinitely faster.

I wonder how much money they lost on giving out those free games to people, as opposed to how much pirating the games affect sales?

Heh, funny.

Wait, you're serious?

"DRM boycots" have always been a fringe movement that is completely irrelevant to sales overall. Usually, the people who agate for DRM boycots are people who would pirate it anyway.

Is it a PR catastrophe in a wider sense? Yes. None of us have the numbers, but Ubisoft certainly seems satisfied with it. There's no way DRM boycotters outnumber would-be pirates, so then it's a question on if the free DLC outweighs the sales. Considering free DLC tends to be cheap as shit to make I don't think it's a huge problem.

I don't think Ubisoft can keep this up on the long run regardless. Like earlier overly invasive DRMs at some point the protection software becomes dated and the PR pressure too great, so you drop it and pretend that the dropping is an act of good will, and many consumers fall for it.

I wish I could say I have any reason to believe the drama surrounding UbiDRM is an example for publishers not to use such ridiculous DRM schemes, but it doesn't look like it. Not remotely.

DRM boycots are not a fringe movement at all. A lot of people who normally buy their games are refusing to buy Ubisoft's latest products due to the DRM issues that have been widely publicized.

No, a lot of people who normally buy their games are raging on the Internet about refusing to buy Ubisoft's latest products due to the DRM issues, even though everyone who ever had any intention of buying Ubisoft games has already done so regardless of their stance on DRM issues. Why? Because people are dumbfucks. Proof:

As much as I hate to say that ... but I think BN is right. People complained about Steam. Yet it works and it will stay. People complained and still complain about EA, its bugs and DRM issues. Yet they are still around and use a lot of stupid things (see the topics about EA here). And I doubt this movement will change much regarding Ubisoft.

That doesnt mean though one should not try it. I avoid ubi games like the plaque.

I'm not buying into this shit either. But I don't know if I would've regardless of DRM. I liked AC1 and really want to try AC2, but I don't really have the time or money.

Regardless, if you're going to avoid games like this, that's fine if you're doing it for yourself and your own reasons, just don't fool yourself into thinking it means something.

I too try to avoid plaque, but I find it's often impractical to brush my teeth after every meal, especially if I'm at a restaurant or suchlike. Anyway, my teeth still look better than these:

"The DRM war, the war never changes"

I know personally, I never buy anything with Starforce unless there's a crack online, because the thing gives my PC a BSOD on a regular basis (compatibility issues), never buy anything with online activation if I'm aware the game requires it - because I play offline a lot and don't have a stable connection, and obviously would not buy anything with this kind of DRM. Yeah, I've been buying very few games lately, but I feel like if I can't insert disk, install, and play, it's a waste of my time.

well its not like one is missing that much anyway. A lot of games today are clones from clones of clones ... so you either played it already at some point or you know the story already.

It starts with games like with block buster movies where you go to youtube, watch the trailer, and have seen already the best part about the movie and know the story. If there is anything left, go to wikipedia. Helps to save money. Worked with AvP 1 and 2. Why watching 2 ours of crap dialogues when you can see the action scenes in less then 5 min !

Metro as example, while it was a good game (with ambience ) it was way to short. Sub Com2 ... they achieved it (yes that IS a achievement !) to top the first story in boredom and reached a new level of quality. And dont even start with the modern RPGs which are not games anymore but interacive movies. Mass Effect *cough*. Now people still even complain about it as they are to lazy to read even the few lines you still have to choose for Shepard ...

Many UBI games releast recently arent that exceptional either. Anno 1404 (UBI is the publisher) got also released a "bit" to early and thus had a quite nasty save game bug where your game would occasionaly kill your savegames afte some ours of playing ... which is for such a game pretty bad. I mean I dont care if a shooter has once in a blue moon a corupted savegame. But in Anno its extremly frustrating when you have to go back to a save you had 2-3 ours ago and have to build your whole economy again.

Count to all that the very stupid DRM/copy protection some game have ... and its really viable to give up gaming. For some time at least.
