Nine Inch Nails – Ghosts

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Similar to Radiohead's new album, Trent Reznor’s Ghosts or Halo 26 is only available online at the moment. The album is all instrumental and experimental, very different from most of Nine Inch Nails previous work. It is described by Trent as soundtrack for a daydream. The Albums comes in a variety of versions: Ghosts I (no halo number) – free, Digital Release (Halo 26) – US$5 to download directly from NIN website, Two-Disc Release (Halo 26 CD) – $10, Deluxe Edition (Halo 26 DE) – $75 and Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition (Halo 26 LE) – $300 which was sold out within hours after it was made available. In my opinion it makes pretty decent background nose for anything from zoning out on the bus to playing your favorite game. The album art is pretty cool too, I really like this one image of abandoned train tracks in the middle of a desert (maybe I can take a screenshot of the pdf and post it here). So give the album a try you can listen to the free sample here http://www.myspace.com/nin if you don’t want to download it directly from their site.

I purchased the $ 10 two cd version on the first day and it was good, but hope, that my cd will ship soon...

I like the sale model from NIN. If you buy it, you get a download link for immediately downloading. So you didn't have to wait until the cd is in your post. The price is also not that expensive.

I was thinking about getting that or the Deluxe Edition but since i got my pod i basically play the Cd once to upload to itunes and then it collects dust on the shelve. So i just got the d/l album for the price of a jack and coke at one of my sleazy bars. I think more musicians should start doing this.

At first I thought about just buying the download, but then I thought noe! Because I want my NIN cds in my shelve. :) I have now approx 19 NIN cds and some other stuff...

I would love to get the down in it EP, but the price is high... the export cds (japan, swede,... EPs) are also a little bit expensive, but I want them. :/

I use to have that mind set and i know a lot of people here still do, remember that thread where people would post up pics of their game collections and would have like 2 copy's of Arcanum and Fallout in the original box? I'd rather pay a low price for a non tangible copy because even if you do have a kick ass cd collection right now its going to get outdated when Cd's are replaced by something better.

Hmm, I've been told to stay away from this. I gave it a listen the other day and agreed. I could probably listen to this while falling asleep or feeling particularly weird.

It's an interesting piece in the NIN catalog but I don't like to pay to listen to a bunch of demos event though half of them are really nice. I went for the 100% free version...

This stuff is super-fucking-good. I really wanted the vinyl set but it sold out right before payday.

I'm excited about the upcoming tour and the general future of this band. So glad we don't have to wait five years between albums anymore.

Malky?

Long time no see, dude. Did you manage to escape from emohood?

I hate everything NIN has done & Ghost is no exception.

Nine Inch Nails is one of those bands that you either get really into or not at all, there is no middle spectrum.

Hey, I was wondering if you were still around. My head is shaved, sir.

Yeah, that pretty much nails it (no pun intended). You can either appreciate Reznor as the master musician and genius that he is or you just don't get it.

The only genius that was in NIN is Charlie Clouser and he left, and I'm glad he did ! Go listen to some soundtracks he did and go back to Ghosts...you'll have a good laugh at NIN latest attempt. Sure Trent is a really gifted musician but Charlie's natural abilities to grasp & execute, surpasses the skills of Trent in every aspect, especially in music programming/engineering.

This is my humble opinion & totally respect your opinion & point of view toward NIN and Trent. I just had to add my grain of salt because I am real passionate about music...I eat & breath music, I just love to debate on the topic :-)

With all due respect to Charlie Clouser and his obvious talent : do you really prefer his soundtracks to stuff like, say, The Fragile ?

As regards Ghosts, well, I think that it is a somewhat interesting album because it demonstrates Trent's abilities while he's in studio surrounded by talented people but as regards the music itself, I think that half of it just isn't that interesting. Year Zero was a nice album and concept but still, nothing genius about it. Good, catchy songs ( despite the fact that Trent tried to promote them as being noisy and naughty stuff ). With Teeth, well, I'm not much into that album. Sounds too much like an actual rock band and I'm not really fond of that even though I love some of the songs on the album like "The line begins to blur" or "Sunspots". The Fragile, well, to me it's Trent's masterpiece.

This CD was well worth $5 so using the ratio of quality/price I’d say Ghosts has really good value. While NIN was and still is one of my favorite bands, I started being critical of their work after With Teeth came out so I pretty much agree with what MrBumble said. With Teeth is probably the Fallout 3 of Nine Inch Nails.

With Teeth is pretty incredible, I don't see what you guys are complaining about. It's not his best work, but it definitely brought him out of a funk and brought some progress to a stagnant band. A lot of the songs are terrific (especially in context of the album and live). It's definitely got a "pop" sensibility about it, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Year Zero is definitely more of a return to traditional form, though.

As far as Charlie Clouser goes - yeah, he's a great musician and a pretty decent composer, but I don't at all understand how you think he surpasses Reznor. Ghosts I-IV is light years ahead of what Clouser did on such classic and important soundtracks as Saw III and Resident Evil: Extinction (note the sarcasm, please). Again, I'm not trying to slight Clouser as a producer, an engineer, or a musician, but his body of work is comprised mostly of remixes and programming/engineering credits. To say that he's as talented a songwriter or musician as Reznor (who seems to have mastered every piece of musical or computer equipment he lays his hands on) is just silly.

What the...Charlie did an amazing job with Saw III score, he composed all the music & played all the instrument .

Charlie's accomplishment just speak for themselves here & pretending otherwise is just silly. Keep this in mind, Although I don't like NIN I have painfully forced myself through every NIN album & I own pretty much every thing Charlie ever did so their is no speculation from my camp when I compare both work. which I cant say the same about you when I read stuff like "his body of work is comprised mostly of remixes and programming/engineering credits".....Know that the music he composed far surpasses what he did for other bands. You probably don't know this because some OST that come to North America have nothing to do with the original motion picture soundtrack.

Only for the saw series he composed 9 track for saw 1, 56 tracks for Saw 2 & composed many complete scores for TV series & other films.

I hope, that, one day, one glorious, glorious, day, I will be able to list a piece of masterwork, like, Saw III, in my credits. That day, will be, amazing.
