North Carolina cancelled, Layoffs at Obsidian

Nobody really knows yet. But it was Sawyers project- yet another game of him which will never see the light of the day.

were any of the leads on the New Vegas crew let go?

Jason Fader was on New Vegas as producer. Probably others too. My mood isn't terribly sour only because Wasteland 2 is doing really well with the funding. Not a big fan of the videogame industry though, not one bit.

Me neither and normally I don't give a shit about some firm kicking out whatever folks. But with Obsidian it's something else, because of them being the only ones who deliver good rpgs nowadays, imo. Feels shitty to see yet another game not getting done.

Dammit, just because they were one point short on some hype site?

More quality dripped off from FNV than FO3 ever did and it was more a sequel than that ever was.

But its a damn shame to see how Obsidian is going through a difficult time while their heart is more in the right place than most developers.

(yes I do realize that a lot of developers would love to do games more their way than what publishers want)

I mourn for the game industry.

Well.

Let's hope some of the laid off devs will find a job on Wasteland 2

Funny. That is the first thing I thought too.

No bonus unless over 85 on a fucking Metacritic site? Fuck Bethesda seriously. They aren't the only game company to do shit like that, but I am sick of hearing about stuff like that. The game industry has been taken over by assholes like EA and it pisses me off. Obsidian deserved better than that. Obsidian needs to follow the lead from InXile. Anyone listening out there?

Anyway, Wasteland 2 so on and so forth.

Haha yeah, I'm sure the reviewers were surprised that the checks from Beth said "give it below 85" instead of "above 90" haha.

South Park is a big name, right? Maybe if they get enough, they can hire those people back on.

... I doubt it, though. (sigh)

Oh come on, I don't like that type of clause either (it's not a Bethesda-only thing btw, it's common industry-wide and those clauses usually ask for 90+ on Metacritic, not only 85+), but this kind of conspiracy theories are a bit nuts. If Bethesda really was interested in screwing up Obsidian they wouldn't have given them the game in the first place. They just had expectations that Obsidian didn't manage to match. They missed that by very little, but they still missed, and a contract is a contract.

I hope Avellone didn't screw Obsidian out of some deal due to frustration though, the fact that he canceled the tweet makes me think that maybe he shouldn't have let that info out in the first place.

Maybe, just maybe this actually happened - Obsidian decided to ditch its newest AAA title (Project North Carolina) and fired every employee who played Mass Effect 3 and praised it. They've decided to return to their Black Isle roots and put their fans first. Avellone will spearhead another Planescape game after WotC sells him the license and the world will not end in 2012.

The biggest influence on review scores is marketing budget and marketing quality. It not paying for reviews or really influence with ads sales but game reviewers are just so excitable.
