OXM article excerpts

It's a rarity to see someone on the Internet admit they're wrong. This thread is a miracle.

God bless us, everyone.

Im sorry Ghar but jumping to the conclusion that Fallout 3 will be a Post-Apocalyptic-Zombie Action game is a bit far fetched.

I'm sorry TorontRayne, but I never jumped to that conclusion.

Everyone here wants Fallout 3 to kick ass, but at least half of us are worried that Fallout 3 will pander completely to the Oblivion crowd and have only a passing resemblance in artwork and names to the Fallout franchise we've all grown to know and love.

Note the 'worried'.

I'll skip the rest of your post, because it's about your opinion regarding a) Why Bethesda ignored us, and b) why isometric is boring -- the latter of which I never argued against and is purely your opinion. Obviously, people developing the Civilization franchise disagree.

Regarding a), I think this sums it up:

Oh. Please point me to the period where they actually tried winning us over, or shut the fuck up.

Regarding your second post, you may have thought that "Bethesda probably got tired of hearing the same shit said over and over again about turn-based and isometric view," but that doesn't make you right about your beliefs.

You then go on to mention a lot of things in a futile attempt to show that copying characters over or some art concepts means that Bethesda is staying true to the game. Just like, FPOS was for Fallout -- or Deus Ex Invi-- er wait, no, that one didn't even manage to do that. None of that qualifies for remotely "trying to keep the game as true to Fallout as possible"

To keep the game true to Fallout would've been to have done something similar to Van Buren. Likewise, to keep DX2 true to Deus Ex, would've been to keep all the gameplay elements that made the original game great, instead of throwing them away and replacing them with completely different ones.

The point isn't whether or not Fallout 3 will be a fucking financial success, it's whether or not it deserves the title Fallout 3 or should named something more appropriate, such as Oblivion 2.

TorontRayne said:
Oblivion with guns huh? I will admit I dislike Todd very much. He hasn't promoted the game very well in my opinion. All I keep hearing is lots of blood, like Oblivion, and freedom of exploration. That is said about lots of games nowadays, but the specifics have not been released , ie:
How many locations there are.
How many NPC's there are.
Projected time it will take to finish the game.
Number of missions and sidequests.

No one gives a flying fuck how many locations, NPCs, missions and sidequests there are -- or how long it takes to finish the game -- IF the game is simply Oblivion with guns and senseless gore and violence. None of that fucking matters unless the game is actually Fallout 3.

Just like it didn't matter that Deus Ex 2 was projected to be shorter than Deus Ex 1 -- so long as it stayed true to its roots and its purpose: being a proper sequel.

But see, you've already said it yourself -- you don't care if it's a proper sequel or not, because you just want to play any post-apocalyptic RPG that has "Fallout" somewhere in its title. So since it doesn't matter to you if Fallout 3 has hordes of zombies or not -- why don't you stop bitching at the rest of us who do.

--

Regarding your third post -- wait... wtf? were you waterboarded before you posted?

In response to Ghar :

Hahaha. I never bitched at anyone about liking anything. If it sounded like that then that dissapoints me. I really thought I expressed myself clearly, but I suppose by the previous posts that I am sorely mistaken. You are right once again that I stated my opinion with no facts to back it up. I never disputed that. I guess I misunderstood. As for being waterboarded no...

By the way- I Fucking care how many NPC's, sidequests, and locations there are.

In response to Brother:

As for Realms of Arkania I have never played it or heard of it. Might have to try it sometime. Brother I will meet you in the parking lot after school to handle the issue of being a pussy or not. Its been statistically proven that Americans fight better than Netherlanders or whatever you call yourself. I did research that......on wikipedia.

I'm with you -- but none of that would matter if the game simply was something completely different with "Fallout" attached to it. (read: Oblivion 2)

Side note: Arkania looks neat, I heard about Drakensang a long time ago when doing research on 3d engines -- they're using Nebula 3 I believe.

I know this was posted a couple of pages back, but just read an article in this month's PC Gamer (Swedish version), where this expression is used about an other game:

Spore.

I googled it too.

So I guess there are more doctors out there ... :)

F.F.O.E.E.-- FULL FRONTAL ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT ERA

F.F.O.E.E.-- FULL FRONTAL ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT ERA

@ Daimyo

Interesting find. Good connection, adds more meaning then conveyed in Emil's quote.
I wasn't looking too far beyond the big shiny wave patterns.
Congratulations Daimyo, you have out performed the professional talking head and the hired scribbler that sliced and diced his factoids.
There may be more substance orbiting the hype of these Spin Doctors, when we can manage to squint beyond the bloom.
The big shiny.
Guess ""that's where the fun is"" , doesn't seem to be in the games themselves as much anymore ... games the smaller rings in this celestial circus.

More to **massively** then the buzz.

Random pick from the page googled:

http://spore.wikia.com/wiki/Massively_single-player

Massively single-player

Massively single-player is a new concept to gaming introduced by Spore.
Essentially, it means that, although the game is single-player and has no direct real-time interaction with other players,
the game is massive in terms of available content and interaction,
since it regularly checks the online Maxis database for creatures, buildings and any form of content creat(e)able in game,
downloading anything that it believes to fit in well with the player's current playing style through the pollinated content system.
In a way, this does lend an indirect form of multiplayer to the game through your interactions with other players' creations, especially space-faring cultures in the space phase.

... massive in terms of available content and interaction ... regularly checks the online ... database ... interactions with other players' creations ...

Short of the dubious 'wright' of claiming the minting of this meaning, how does this Maxis feature **massively** vary from other on line era games?

For example, 'Dawn Of War' the RTS with numerous updating patches, ( while it seemed to matter, had me checking in ... ), three 'professional' -- boxed -- expansions, player mod's, maps, and campaigns.

The all essential community forum.

[warning] (All nex gen readers close your eyes, here comes a scary, challenging concept.)

Plus the show and tell of player virtual 'painted' armies, that touched the -- table top -- pedigree of the 40k universe, the down home geeky link
to ______ P ----- N ----- P______!!!!!1!!!!

(Content now safe for nex gen sense and sensibilities.) [/warning]

Massively single-player .. 'awesomely' holistic ... in it's essential aides, community group hug, and lure of shiny hooks.

Your example of planet wide media, or, mass communication may vary.

This **massively** thing is happening whether or not Emil, or Wright's Maxis coin the term. Why worry over crediting a concept's example or it's creator?
Too close an association and false impressions flourish. Could become a 'cross to bear' ... Al Gore ---> Internet.

Be careful, any cabal can shout up a new era.
All the professional pundits have to do is nail a messiah to a tree (Wright?) and then cull agreement via the ritual - mass - hanging up of a new calender,
hymns and incense optional.

**Massively** not enough 'sex' appeal? Some straight ahead spin that's less filling?
Age of the Internet, too old? Too Gore-y?
No longer restrained by B.C. or A.D. , could self proclaim the F.F.O.E.E. !

Teh ... Full Frontal Online Entertainment Era !

Drakensang is...something else. DSA 4th edition Baldur's Gate clone.

Arkania is an all-original 2nd edition old-school cRPG. And, again, best ever. First person.

I'm not sure what angle you're going for, 4too.

I mean, if you look at Oblivion, it's basically an MMORPG without the only component, so a MMRPG, or MMSRPG, whichever. It's a good description of what it is.

Or are you saying the usage of "massively" here is just hype-ey?

I know right? Wikipedia is the best source of information ever. What I find funny is when someone on a news show or something similar quotes a wikipedia article. User-submitted info is SO reliable. That is kinda off topic, but it just irks me a bit. I have talked to people that didn't know Wikipedia isn't a fucking encyclopedia.

Ehm, it *is* an encyclopedia.
A pretty unreliable one, but still an encyclopedia.

Oh, and Bas Rutten, Peter Aerts, Ernesto Hoost, Remy Bonyaski, Semmy Schilt and the whole of K-1 boxing would disagree with your statement about fighters. Out of a total of 14 years the sport has been existence, Dutchies have won the title 11 years. Americanskies just suck at it. ;)

Semmy Schilt is awful, though, Sander. I love Hoost and Aerts, but Schilt is just a really big ass. Hate him.

And Wikipedia takes itself too serious as a source of information. Hell, its users take it too seriously. It's fun, though.

Perhaps I was juggling too many angles at one time Brother None.

Emil's use of *M* seemed wide open to extreme interpretation.

Daimyo riffed on my 'lulz' with a google that nailed a legitimate descriptive use for "massively single player".

Could have stopped at the observation that any game with online support,
with online distribution of patches, expansions mod's and ---> horse armor, (BN your example of Oblivion *M* stature applies.)
any software, dare I say fan site, blessed with an active online community can claim any 'word'. Any term of endearment.

[compulsive eye tick]
That term could be "massively".
Perhaps as long as 'extreme' is spelled with one 'x' in this contexxt,
MY 'hype' anti-bodies will not rally and swarm.
[/compulsive eye tick]

There exists a 'fair use' of "massively" no matter who claims to be, or name, it's daddy.

And, an open season for riffing on over selling and extreme gestures, including the expansive gesticulations of this 4too.

Whew, epic thread. Took me like three hours to read through it.

Some of this new information has me worried, in particular the "we're really funny" unfunny attitudes of the Bethsoft guys giving the interview. I hate phrases like "we're having some fun with it" and the whole thing about the old woman's head is just bizarre. I mean, in the right circumstances I think that could be funny, but the situation itself is not.

The whole article is fawning. There's no attempt at asking any difficult questions- it's like watching a reporter from a North Korean state news agency interview Kim Jong-Il. The whole tone is "so guys, you're really really awesome, how do you do it?" followed by the Bethsoft guys grandstanding. There's no attempt at challenging them and asking them tough questions, just pandering to their PR machine.

I'm not bothered by the ghoul picture. It's not so far removed from the original ghouls to be a concern- they were pretty zombie-like themselves.

I agree with what's been said about throwing Dogmeat back in- it seems like a superficial attempt to be faithful to the originals. I don't object to a dog being in there, but why the need to call it 'Dogmeat' unless this is a "ZOMG GUYZ THIS IS FALLOUT 4 REAL!!1" gambit.

The "charisma" page of the book doesn't really bother me, either. It is, after all, intended for children, so it makes sense that it would be in simple language.

I haven't given up on this, but it would be so much better if it was in the hands of the creators. Intellectual property like this being bandied around to people who didn't create it and were not given it by the creators is inherently wrong.
