Paid too handsomely?

Mutagen

First time out of the vault
I've played Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and it's seeming like I can't get away from caps. In NV with no addons, cheats, or exploits I ended up with anout 130,000 caps. This is after buying the best weapons I could find, all the ammo, and all the surgical upgrades. I think it kinda cheapens the game to be able to acquire so many caps early in the game. I'm not even sure how I get most of them, but I always do, and it takes away some of the "oh no how will I ever afford (item x)..." drama from the game.
Looking back to 1 and 2 I had the same problem. Too many caps and not enough to spend them on. Maybe it's me... Anyone else having this problem?

I had that problem in Fallout 2 very often, but never in New Vegas.
I rarely hoard and I barely go anywhere specifically to loot anything. Mostly, I just take what I need and don't carry huge amounts of stuff to the dealers.
Well, maybe in the beginning.
Your solution? Try hardcore mode, with ammo having weight you won't be able to carry huge amounts of loot with you all the time :D

I find this annoying too.

I wish there was some sort of dynamic based on supply of weapons and armor vs. supply of caps.

The vendors should pay less if they already have a ton of bush rifles in their inventory.

I also wish there were more expensive "unique" items.

How about a 20k or 50k unique rifle... even if it is not all that more powerful, it could be "Old Man Houses rifle"

Then you would have something to spend money on...

or some sort of economic development:
pay to invest in new vendors. once they are up and running in the new location, they are able to offer items unique to their shop. $30k for the option would be nice.

Housing and mods to housing (rather than just in the lucky 38... the lucky 38 house is pretty cool, but it takes too long to get into.

I would love a house like that somewhere else (how about freeside)... but wait, you have to hire guards to prevent your house from being looted (Maybe a limited size locking trunk in the house to hide all of your really rare valuables).. .but everything else could be looted by NPCs if they can get past your guards... or you. Maybe the NPCs could attack while you are there like a Legion Assassin hit just shows up.

Hate Servant, I tried hardcore mode and it had the opposite effect. I found that having ammo weighted, I had to also sell that and it brought in even more caps. Usually I could buy a ton of ammo instead of selling everything for caps, but then I had a lot of caps and a lot of useless ammo.

Willis I like the ideas, but it seems like it would add more secondary things to the game. Sometimes the secondaries are great, but when it comes to things like that I don't think I'd do them. It's like Fable 2, I played through, only got a wife to sacrifice her, bought no property, and didn't have kids because it was all too detracting from the story.

It's not surprising, considering how easy it is to break all the casinos. I just started repairing things and tossing the perfect ones in the armor/weapons into my 'arsenal' box and only selling the leftovers. When I moved my stuff from Lucky 38 to big MT I was waddling down the strip with ~7k pounds of crap in my backpack.

Ahhhhhh, memories. I actually got a bag of chips, put the controller (360) on the floor, and moved the control stick with my foot while eating the chips. I really don't understand why I can't warp in freeside.

Try having a low repair skill or only repairing your gear on vendors. My max wallet size has been something like 60,000 caps, and I'm fine with that, it's not like I spend it any more than I would if I had one sixth of that amount.

At the end of my New Vegas career, accounting for the worth of all my items added to my caps, I had several million caps worth of items. It's ridiculous.

Edit: Literally; I worked it out with a calculator.

Threep, I had a great deal of worth in items, but I was talking plain out caps. I had awesome weapons and armor stored up so I can't see how I made that many caps, although Oerjeke I can see your point, that could probably lower it a bit. I had my repair pretty high.

If you're on the PC, check out the Bartertown mod. By default it will greatly increase the cost of items across the Mojave.

Personally, I would love alot of the ideas mentioned earlier. If anything, it would make the game more engrossing for me to be able to buy housing, fix it up, hire bodyguards, be involved in wasteland economy, etc etc.

But I also agree that once you reach a certain point that it's very easy to be swimming in a big Scrooge McDuck vault full of caps :)

which is true for almost EVERY RPG though. Even those which make it difficult to get money/credits/gold.

I don't see that as a real problem though. I actually don't want to worry the whole game about it. Just till a certain point. It is not fun to have 100 000 gold coins with level 1. But its neither that great when you are ruining around with 10 on level 50 (or what you consider "high level").

This only with a singleplayer RPG of course. I think it is rather difficult to design here a way where it does not feel artifical and gives the player a challenge. Not some RPG but stalker call of pripyat did it rather well. It is difficult to get money. But at some point later in the game when you get more advanced equipment it becomes easier.

What is the point in draining the casinos empty of their chips? Sure I did the minigame once or twice, but some people seem to do it only so that they can have even more caps, to later make a thread here that there are too many caps in the game?

Don't get me wrong, it's unfortunately a common trope that in late game in RPGs the player often becomes a Donald Trump alike, but I never had that problem in New Vegas.

Then again, I don't do some weird ways to smuggle all the gold bars out Dead Money, don't collect each little junk item laying around and don't do such Casino stuff..

As a note to Surf, I only got booted from one of the casinos when I had the 130k. the rest I didn't even touch.

The game probably does need more cash-sink options like implants and the like, expensive add-ons to drain all that pointless wealth out of the system. Even better if they are primarily conveniences and decoration rather than anything that affects game balance.

You get something from the casinos. Items, other free stuff, etc. I think there is even some unique or hard to get stuff, but I am not sure, never really played the casino games. In any case, you don't only "suck money" out of them.

You do get some half-okay swag at certain chip milestones, but there aren't really any rare items given to you by the Casinos aside from the scarcely-if-ever seen Rum & Nuka, and that's really only useful to the kind of person who collects these things just to have them around. The real payoff is access to the high roller suites at each casino and, if you're the type to care about this sort of thing, the Achievement you get for breaking all the banks on The Strip.

The one exception: If you've got Dead Money, you really might find it worth your while to make sure you break the bank there before you leave:

[spoiler:094bc5c39d]If you do so, you'll receive a voucher every few days at the Abandoned BOS Bunker for 1,000 Sierra Madre chips, which can be exchanged right there in the safehouse for food, drugs, stims, repair kits, and a couple of different types of ammo (most notably, .308). As God as your witness, you'll never go hungry again![/spoiler:094bc5c39d]

You know what's more funny: having 60.000 caps at level 2 doesn't mean squat, except for getting the implants.

The very good weapons and armors are scattered on the Mojave or given in quests.
If you want a very good armor at the beginning you need to broke the bank at Gomorrah or join the Followers, you chose wich is more easy; Gun Runners don't sell Assault and Marksman Carbines, Brush Gun, AMR, Sniper, LMG until level 12 or 14; the same goes to explosives at the 188 and Boomers; Van Graffs don't sell advanced EW until you reach almost level 30.

I don't understand the fixation with money in NV.
