Perks of my job

Still Mildly Glowing
as some of you already know, I work at a gun store/range.

well today some old lady, probably a wodow or something, dropped off a large quantity of ammunition for us to "dispose" of... anyway, our definition of "dispose" is pick over it for the decient stuff and dismantle the dangerous/unusable stuff.

so anyway, i got to claim a bunch.... heres what i got:

an old box of "Western" 20ga. shotgun shells (claims "all new PLASTIC," so it might be a collecters item to some people, can you say ebay?)

17 rounds 38 Long Colt "ball"
247 rounds 9mm luger "ball"
50ish rounds of 7.62 x ? (AKs use 7.62 x 39) "ball"
16 rounds 357 magnum "ball"
54 rounds .38 special "wadcutter"
39 rounds .38 special "ball"
60 rounds 30-30 "ball" (its a cowboy rifle round)
60 rounds .35 "ball" (another cowboy rifle round)

what am i going to do with all this you ask? who knows.... most of it will probably end up in my "loose ammo" .50 ammo can... but then again, i work at a range, so i never know what i will get to shoot from day to day.

How do you decide what is safe and what is unsafe?

It would suck if you made a mistake and your rifle blew up in your face.

By safe he probably means not corroded to hell and back, either primer or casing. You don't want the firing pin to strike the primer and it not go off... You then have a chambered round that MIGHT go off or not.

"50ish rounds of 7.62 x ? (AKs use 7.62 x 39) "ball" "

The only other really common 7.62mm round is 7.62x51mm NATO aka .308 Remington. Of course, some people describe .30-06 and related rounds as 7.62mm Whatever.

All in all, it looks like you came off well. I'm apparently not old enough, by law, to work in a gunshop though. Stupid considering I literally know more than many people who work in gunshops. - Colt

Yeah, it's probably 7.62x39mm, that round is easily distinguished from other full caliber rifle rounds. .30-06 are actually 7.62mm but with a longer case of 63mm, the Russians also used a rimmed 7.62x54mm ammunition for their old mosin-nagant rifles; this cartridge is still in use and is fired by SVDs and PK machineguns.

I think he was actually stating that the Kalashnikov fires the 7.62x39mm round to say that he knows it's not that... We need clarifying. Pictures!

Let us not be distracted from our True Cause by this luddite. We must not turn away from the task at hand! Gather round, Brothers, for we have a cartridge to identify!

shouldn't every citizen be ready to overthrow the fascist governement if their communist rights are being trampled comrade Ratty?

Guns should be legal, but ammo should be outlawed. Just walk around and say BANG BANG! Or we could outlaw guns, and let people buy ammo. Just walk around throwing ammo at each other.

You could like rule the world with a howitzer shell. You can stand there while people toss 22mm at you, and just laugh and laugh.

unfortunately, my digicam is down, and i didnt get one for christmas like i thought i was going to. but im going back into work to blow off some of that 9mm and Ill take some of that 7.62 in and compare it to the x 39 we have at the store, and while im out ill look into getting a new camera

Whenever I read such posts, I start thinking that people who write them are from another planet. Seriously.

My Uncle talks like that. He owns over 30 firearms...God bless America!

Whoa to go Warmonger...get that stuff on Ebay and you'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Sincerely,

What? Oh, the extreme run-on withe very little punctuation? I was in a hurry. But anyway, its definitely not 7.62 x 39. i got a crazy idea and compared it to a .30 carbine round.... and its nearly identical. The only difference is that the .30 projectile sits just a hair farther out than the 7.62.

I thought Ratty meant the "which do you like best, 7.62g or the 33x variety? I'm gonna try the 2003 special edition but just got a nice shipment of 8.43mm from Germany" thing.

No, I was referring to the manner in which you talk about firing dangerous firearms like its the same thing as playing GBA or doing the dishes.

EDIT: Fixed a speling error. Sorry, am a bit drunk.

oh, guns are lots of fun.... but then again, i live in the free world, where its perfectly legal to walk around town with a loaded firearm displayed...

and just so you know ratty, i dont actually own any guns right now, i just sell them and shoot them.

Firearms are dangerous just as your local spork is. If you misuse it and handle it improperly, it can cause damage or even death.

People who know and understand firearms talk about them in a casual manner because they are not afraid of them and know that if you're stupid then bad things will happen... But being familiar with them will not. I only own one rifle. It sits in the corner, unloaded, bolt closed, and safety on. I know it is there if I need it but not until then. - Colt
