Pete explains

Pete Hines (PR Bethesda) decided to post a small explanation to his "We're not going to suddenly do a top-down isometric Baldur's Gate-style game, because that's not what we do well" statement in a thread on the morrowind forums. Here's what he said:
Sure, that was a phone interview and he slightly misquoted me. What I said was, "I don't know if we'd suddenly..."

All the other interviews I've done were by email.

It's too early to say because it's too early to say. Nothing's been decided. Sure we have intentions and ideas, but nothing firm yet. There are certainly things we fully INTEND to do, and I could simply and easily answer those questions, but since no team has sat down and decided yet for sure, then it doesn't make sense to give definite answers, even if it's as simple and fundamental as the SPECIAL system.
So again he stresses the fact that nothing has been decided, what did they originally plan then ?

It does convey the impression that Bethesda was merely seized by the whim to buy the Fallout license and the rights to the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, only because they could.
I do hope that this is the wrong impression. :?

I don't find it the least bit odd that they would purchase the license without having a design document drafted. Who does that? First step to creating a Fallout game: acquire the license. THEN comes the design. They'd apparently casually talked about some ideas, but nothing's been nailed down yet, and until they do, there doesn't seem much point in them telling us what they might or might not end up doing.

Yeah, tought it had been posted already, but at least it's good news (almost a confirmation of SPECIAL's use at the very least).

You would at least make a concept document; you don't just think "Why don't we buy the Fallout licence today". It’s not professional.

Who does that?

Professionals?

You're the designers' pet? :D

Umm... no :P

And on topic.

Well at least this means either:

A) They know they screwed up

B) Some people really jumped the gun and went on the offensive

C) Phone interviews are bad.

I consider it irrelevant news as Pete's explanation for bringing up Baldur's Gate was "it's made by the same devs who made KotOR" which doesn't explain anything to me.

I still see the only explanation for bringing up BG as it's using the same perspective. That is all when you take 3D for granted.
Although I suspect I have been thinking more about this statement than Pete when he made it..

they were prolly eatin some mcy dees n' were like "ey, doods. you think we're bad ass enough to make fallout 3?"

n' the other professionals were like, "hell yah, brotha."

then took a jet to interplay, told em' why they are so bad ass. and explained how their wickedness = monay.

so interplay was like, "would you like some fallout with that?"

no design needed.
