Pete Hines on Fallout 3 mods

Imagine one month after the game is released you already have mods that add killing children, nudity, sex, prostitution, more realistic drug consumption, basically all manner of evil things. I think Bethesda is afraid that this will make some countrys actually ban the game. I personally dont think it will happen but i do believe that Bethesda wants to be better safe then sorry.

Oh noes, you'd be able to do evil things in a suicidally depressing post-apocalyptic version of our planet.

Our entire civilization lays in ruins, but i can't get a hooker, i'm under aged. She has morals. Woop!

I just blew up a city with a nuclear bomb, but i can't shoot that kid in the balls. Die, you lil' rascal, die!

I watched that guy's head blow up to pieces in slow motion while being high on methylbenzoylecgonine. Shh, it's my little secret, don't tell anyone.

Dear God. The dam that held the River of Hypocrisy tame has gave! Quickly, to the Oblivious Pods!

People are still playing Fallout 1/2, even when it's been 10-20 years ago. Does Bethesda realise that?

I think there is a difference between killing a child first-hand and nuking a village from far away; I think its kind of how like there are people out there who wouldn't eat meat if they had to kill the animal, but they buy meat products at the supermarket everyday. Just because you don't see it makes a big difference. So its never black and white

Although really the whole thing is kind of silly, because video games are totally different from real life (i.e. Jack Thompson's arguments that keep getting shot down in court).

I don't think that Bethesda will be able to keep from releasing the mod tools for more than 1 - 2 months. A huge slice of their Oblviion customers have been people who either want to contribute to the mod scene or who want to utilize those mods to extend their gameplay. For these people, the modding tools are an inherent part of the reason that they bought Oblivion (and Morrowind before that) in the first place. To ask them to buy a new game without the modding tools is like asking them to buy half a game for full price.

I think the release of Fallout 3 will be big but not near as sustained as Oblivion was. In addition to losing some customers who demand mod tools, they will be facing far greater competition than when Oblivion was released, especially on the consoles. When Oblivion was released it was one of the prettiest games out there (at least according to screenshots), now everyone knows that the engine is a half-step behind the times. When Oblivion was released there really weren't too many XBox360 games on the shelves, now there are tons of them. Unlike Oblivion, Fallout 3 will be competing directly with shooter games (and there are a ton of them on the XBox360).

For Bethesda to willingly cast off one big segment of their customer would be stupid. I could be wrong, but I don't think that the new group of gamers turned on by slow motion dismemberment will make up for the modders and mod users that would be lost. As soon as they see sales numbers dip, they will get right on the mod tools.

Because Bethesda doesn't appreciate that their fans correct their games' mistakes and sometimes even make the game better.

They're a bunch of self-confident capitalists :D

Modders are pickier than developers? I don't think that is so. It seems they think no mod tools should be released if everyone and their dumb little brother aren't able to use them off the bat with no effort whatsoever. If the concern was simply that the ability to mod should be out there, this wouldn't be an issue.

I already mention this on RPS. I think not releasing mod tools is can be easily explained. After Oblivion was released first mods that came out was to remove underwear so ESRB rating was changed from T to M which meant less money for Bethesda. They dont want same thing to happen again with fans adding bunch of mods for killing children and nudity. But i believe that mod tool will be released few months after the game.
Wrong. Oblivion was rerated for unused nipple textures (still in the game, just not used) and for more blood and gore than was represented in what was sent to them by Beth. Mods had abolutely nothing to do with the rerating.

Was surprising when you opened up the female models for Oblivion and found you could take of the bra (and pants but there was nothing downstairs).
Evidently they had ideas of an adult(ish) game and got wet feet, or just wanted a laugh.

Maybe that's good enough for Bethesda?
Like that nerd in Robot Chicken
"I wish I could be a superhero, so girls will show me their boobs, I will see their boobs, and could see with my super eyes their...uhhh boobs"- something like that.

Unless all Bethesda's knowledge of human anatomy comes from Barbie dolls.

Here's the same idea from extras.
