Playing as a black dude

blatant racism is funny. Its the more subtle kind and people who actually belive the crap you gotta worry about.

No disk space for a black VD? They had a black VD in the vault they could have just used that model just like they had white vault delvers that look just like your white character in the game.
Nope, they couldn't have. Because that would've meant creating 'black' models for every armor/weapon combination in the game, which they didn't need to do now.
The choice for a single male and a single female protagonist model stemmed mostly from that limitation.

This is one of the reasons i love Arcanum for it was so racist when it came to classes. Like the Gnomes where jews (or was it habits?) and half-orcs being black people is just too much (if half-orcs were black what does that make orcs or ogres?). Racism is actually a big part of the game in a sense of how different classes get treated.
...
Classes? You mean species. Also, equating Gnomes with Jews and Half-Orcs with blacks seems rather ridiculous.

To sum it up, talking about racism in this country for the past decade or two is probably similar to what talking about religion was during the Inquisition . It's easier and safer to just not talk about it at all or to only talk about it in careful, approved ways than to risk being branded a racist and having Al Sharpton set up camp on your doorstep.

This is a topic that originated from the GTA:IV thread. So I deiced to dedicate a new thread to all the homies out there to prevent going off topic. How many Games are out there that had a black protagonist? Fallout never gave us that option I’m a bit surprised actually, I think Vampire: bloodlines had one or two clans which had a black character, Arcanum had no black characters in it. Shadow Man, Sports and the Deff Jam games are the only ones I can think of right now which lets you play as a black character. What do you think the really reason behind this is?

I here you. Personally, I think a little color is more attractive and when the game provides me the chance, I create a character of color. I read KOTOR below, that is a decent example there. I also read that a problem is some of the games are not set in a region where folk of color reside... I don't know about that... That's too easy of a way out to me since half of the games out there are set in another world.

Equating, maybe, seeing an inspiration no. There's a book about treatment of half-orcs in Tarant Library that explains everything.
As for Gnomes - I don't recall their elites plotting to rob humanity from magical/spiritual powers and to impose their religion on everything that moves, so they may be something else.
On the other hand I don't know much about other races in Arcanum I usually play a Dark Elf and kill every technology loving scum I can.

You mean, like having to talk without calling people names because of their skin colour and other forms of terror?

Ehm, yeah, or Gnomes are just based on what gnomes are usually based on in fantasy. I really think you're reading way too much into this. Especially since half-orcs are the result of (usually) raped humans.

Actually, if you guys don't recall - in Fallout 2; the cafe of broken dreams (where you get Dogmeat) there's a black vault dweller, and a female vault dweller with red hair.

Please do read the entire thread, next time.
As has been explained, yes, there were black vault dwellers other models. However, those only had the gun-less, armor-less models. Having to add models for every combination of armor and weapon would've taken a lot more disk space and trouble, hence why they stuck with one male and one female model.
Yeesh.

Yes, but the Vault Dwellers that DarkLegacy is talking about are explaining that.

How many armors were there which they didn’t make a black model for? The Leather Jacket and The Leather armor that was about it. They had a black model for the Metal Armor, Combat Armor I’m not completely sure if there was a black model for it, but since only the lower part of your characters face is exposed how much space would it have possibly taken to paint it black. Powerarmor doesn’t expose anything so what’s the problem?

I was referring to Jews owning all the business like the Gnome shop keepers. Also that *race* had bonus to haggle hence the stereotype of Jews being cheap and never paying full price for everything, then what else the big noises in the description. (dawn we are looking way too much into this)

Again: they had to make a seperate model and animations for every armor/weapon *combination*. That's a lot more.

Also, there would have to be a female black model.
And a red haired model and asian model and and and and and...

Omikron: The Nomad Soul had a black woman you could possess.... BG series had black pics, Urban Chaos you play a female black cop, True Crime: New York you play a black cop. Mercenaries you play a black Mercanary... Jagged Alliance I and II you had the option of hiring black mercenaries. I know this isn't much but they are out there.

Given that it’s the future from the 1950’s prospective the future would only consist of black and white.

Another theory: The white character model could be passed of as Asian, Spanish, ect.. due to the poor graphics that were available at the time.

Was Lynette the only black chick left in Fallout 2?

No one ever claimed they weren’t around, like I said its just very limited.

Now, do we want to keep "Niggas" out of our fantasy worlds or do we become PC or do we push for developers to expand our options in open ended RPGs?

Are you saying that if some people conceive of Jews as stereotypical shop owners, then if some other people make up a race of stereotypical shop owners, they are automatically riffing off the conceptions of the first group? They can't make up things independently of what some other people think? Anyone who goes to the metaphysical shop-owning slot to put something in it will find it already filled by stereotypical Jews?

I think that what we really need is a pink Vault Girl interface.

Or perhaps some of us don't believe it is quite the big issue you make it out to be, while not being racists?
