Poll: Could they make you come back?

Could Bethesda could do something to make you play Fallout 4

Here's the problem. See all the criticism for Fallout 4? The fuel for change? It's not in good favour. The vast majority of the critics of Fallout 4 call it out for, what, not meeting modern industry standards?
I agree with them. Bethesda's insistence on flogging their dead horse of an engine harder and harder with every new game is one of my biggest criticisms of them. Fallout 4 is technically so far behind its release date that it's embarrassing.

This is a single playthrough game for me. The mere thought of ever starting from the beginning and going through all those radiant and filler quests makes my skin crawl. I thought Fallout 3 was pretty weak, but I managed at least two and a half playthroughs before totally tiring of it. But 4? Ugh. It's such a drag to play.

I finished Fallout 3, twice now... mainly to see how it compares to Fallout 4. Hoo boy is it better. At least I can be evil in a cartoony way.

Interesting points there, but I have to disagree. While yes, the majority doesn't like it because it's not enough of a shooter, we're (maybe just me) are cheering for the fact that Bethesda's fantastic game streak has been broken. No longer do raging fanboys (of a different colour) dominate, and many are starting to realize there are flaws with Bethesda's games. Hopefully this means less hype, and more consumer interest and research instead of diving in into shit.

I wouldn't been so quick to assume increase in awareness on their part. Maybe they'll just dive into other shit instead with the same amount of interest, but I guess in a way that's already a step forward.

My point was more among the lines of "if Bethesda decides to learn from the response, they might learn the wrong lesson". Not very likely in this stage that they would make Fallout a better RPG, but I supposed that ship has sailed and we're just waiting for the Satellite Reign to the Syndicate or the Xenonauts to the XCOM at this point. I suppose if they started listening, Fallout 5 might turn out a better game as a whole but I doubt it will turn out to be in the original spirit ever again.

In any case, one point I would like to bring up. Bethesda's games allows the player to pick up any physics object directly. This is pretty unique, for an open-world game. But it also allows players to exploit this to steal items. Do any of you think this feature should be omitted?

I feel like switching to any other engine at this point for them would probably be fairly costly, and a hassle. I doubt that community response will get them to switch out to a new engine.

Of course it would be. It takes money and effort to keep your company's technology current. But it's not like they don't have the income to do it. They're just too cheap and lazy to spend a dollar more than necessary on their games, especially when they can merrily coast along on the fruits of their bloated marketing budget.

I could easily seeing the board members balking at the cost of a software upgrade. "But then I won't be able to afford my new winter house." [A single tear streaks down his cheek]

+1

Fallout 4: Pretty screenshots, ugly when characters actually start moving and talking. Witcher 1 has similar or better character animations and lip sync and that game was made on the Aurora Engine (same as Knights of the Old Republic).

I understand why all the pictures are limited to screenshots now. They didn't want to show the people as much as possible.

I mean, Fallout 4 is what it is. They're never going to turn it into a good roleplaying game with either interesting character building or dialogue. It's always going to be a combat-focused loot-fest, and that's not really something I want in an RPG.

It's certainly possible to convince me to give Fallout 5 a shot, and maybe some of the DLC will be great (heck, New Vegas was a much better game after the DLC), but I don't think I'm ever going to like Fallout 4 that much.

Bethesda have to do something amazing in order for me to buy F5 on launch.
I probably will end up buying F5 eventually, second hand most likely as I'm a whore to the series.
But considering F4 failed to live up to expectations and Skyrim being a bit lacklustre, I have barely any hope for the future of Bethesda at all.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years, Bethesda be the kind of company that everyone hates like Ubisoft or EA.

I have a feeling that the makeup of the entire games industry will be vastly different after a decade, and that companies like EA going on like they do won't be the norm for AAA publishers anymore. In which case, Bethesda would be taking the wrong path if they go down this road, but I guess if they do go down that road and go bankrupt or something, a lot of people here on NMA will be happy, so that's probably not a concern.

I really hope that Bethesda don't go bankrupt.
There's a lot of talented people out there who are having their talents wasted with mediocre FPS.
It needs to rethink who it wants to target and rework their writing staff

Or it could be like Pandemic; they're all moved to incredibly mediocre companies and any evidence of past talent is sucked up by the endless abyss that is the triple-A games industry, I guess that would also happen if they stayed at Bethesda though so what the hell, they should run for their lives creative integrity!

Join Obsidian. That would be fantastic then.

I find it hard to believe that Bethesda is one of the worst companies in existence. I guarantee you that Fallout could be in worse hands and if you don't believe so, go ahead and miss the entire point. I also highly doubt Obsidian will ever return to the Fallout franchise.

Oh I agree, there are worse (EA) but Bethesda is still pretty bad. Why not?

I guess if they're offered enough money, they probably would, but after having your own series taken away and then thrown off a cliff and then handed back as a mangled corpse, I'm pretty sure they just wouldn't bother. I mean, Obsidian has a bunch of other potential IPs they could be working on instead, one that they can actually enjoy and where the publisher actually respects them as developers.

I would rather see them make a spiritual successor to Fallout under a good publisher.

The problem is that Fallout is extremely special, and even if they make an IP it will have to be heavily different.

One of the sad parts is that even if they do develop a similar IP, people will think Obsidian were the ones to rip-off Fallout. The comparison in general when people refer their friends to Obsidian's new game would be "it's like Fallout". Kind of upsetting yet ironic.
