"Awakenings" also mentions that they were fully cognizant while in that 'shut down' state; unable to initiate or respond.

You may be right as I have not watched Awakenings in a long time, but the analogy still stands. No matter how they "appear" to be, no matter if they are cognizant or not, as long as the brain is certified intact, they are alive and deserve to live.

Unless they run out in front of your car, of course

I believe that there is some misunderstanding here. I shared my opinion earlier in the context of protecting my life and property and those around me in a literal sense. I am not going to endanger my passengers for that fucking deer in the middle of the road on a mountain pass.

There is a difference between dumb, instinctual animals like squirrels and marmots and somewhat intelligent dogs and cats. It is very sad when such an animal dies on the highway or in ANY circumstance. But I will not break down crying for that dumb ass dog that decided to chase a rat across the road in the middle of the night. Its not worth it.

Let me clarify:

I will do all I can to not hit animals on the road. But when they endanger me, my passengers and my car, I will hold my ground, I will brake, and I may run them over and kill them, but I will not drive the car off the cliff to save their worthless life.

Priorities.

Human life > Animal life

I will preserve Human life over Animal life if I have to choose. Does this make more sense?

This gets me thinking:
Do you consider mentally handicapped people to be worthy of moral consideration like other people? Like people who can't speak or do anything for themselves, but are still aware of their environment and have reactions to people and activities?

I don't know but if I ever get Dementia, I just hope someone does peacefully kill me. One of my biggest fears is having it and having it bad.

Yeah, brain issues are pretty scary. I remember being worried that my mawmaw had it, but she didn't test positive for it.

That's good.
I've actually started writing stories about it, like a guy losing his identity and his memories. Every love and stuff. It's a scary thing

This I would never support. It is one of the sickest aspects of humanity's hubris. Humans are but one animal amoung many, and they are the most destructive of all; they constantly ruin the world for everything else.

Agent Smith was right.
^ I spot the one who would have voted for "Humans", if it was an option.
