Hey folks -

So I am on the plane coming back from Germany this summer and I see that the 5th Wave is available for watching. I'm thinking, alien invasion, climate change, plague, break down of public order... how bad can it be?

Holy shit was a God awful movie. Seriously, at one point they are attacking an alien camp adn teh lead pauses from saving her brother when she gets distracted by the kiss of a hunky Alien dude. I am sorry, but this teenaged post-apocalytic romantic crap has got to go. I finished up thinking, "Well there's a good 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back."

That said, I have to admit that earlier this year I was hopelessly addicted to Mad Max, Fury Road, to the point I had to watch it at night so my wife wouldn't say, "WTF? you are watching that AGAIN?" Such is marriage.

So Post-Apoc flicks? Good, the bad and the ugly? What are your thoughts?

Hmm, good post apocalyptic movies. I have not seen so many but I will try to recall which ones I know about.

Well The Road but you probably know about that one. Definitely one of the more depressing ones thus probably more accurate to the truth.

Six String Samurai but I would not call it serious post apocalypse. In a sense it is a little like the wackier aspects of Fallout. Might be fun if you enjoy a little nonsense in your PA.

Waterworld though this is probably an attempt on doing Mad Max on water, and as you may have heard it is not that very good. But hey it is PA.

The Postman but I understand that like so many book-to-movie conversions it is not accurate to the book.

The Quiet Earth. This is an interesting one, it is more psychological but I was really rather curious on what had made seemingly all people disappear except for the main protagonist.
Has a bit of a mindfuck ending which is still very intriguing.

Reign of Fire. Post Apocalypse with dragons. Apparently it were dragons that wiped out the dinosaurs and now they're trying to do the same to us. The apocalypse aspect was also partly caused by the US who tried to fight the spread of the dragons by using ICBMs, wrecking most of the world before the dragons could.
Not brilliant but still very amusing. I don't think you will be that bored while watching this.

Logan's Run. Sort of PA, with lots of 50s (or is it 60s) (counter) culture references and designs. Based on a book series but I have not seen those on sale for a very long time.
Sort of a sci fi cult film but not brilliant though it has some memorable segments like carousel.
Probably a little bit of Brave New World in this as well.

Planet of the Apes. (take your pick but I suggest you go with the Charlton Heston original how silly it may be). It is post apocalyptic but only really in the last few scenes.
It is okay and an iconic sci fi movie but I would not call it brilliant. It is based on a book but like so many old books I think it is barely remember and the movie has little in common with the original story.
Don't bother with the sequels.
(next to reboots it also launched a whole media spin off such as comics which I really don't understand (at one point apparently the apes manage to create a 1920s United States including gorillas wearing old time gangster suits and yielding tommy guns), including a Star Trek/Planet of the Apes crossover!)
 
1. Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone is kind of a post apocalyptic movie. You guys should check it out. The movie has a lot of similarities with Fallout too. It has mutants, robots, cyborgs, raiders etc

2. Snowpiercer is a really unique and good post apocalyptic movie. The world became too cold to support life and the only survivors have no choice but to live on a futuristic train to avoid freezing to death. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706620/

3. Doomsday is a really good post apocalyptic movie too. Imagine if you combined post apocalyptic Scotland, cannibals, Mad Max, Resident Evil and knights. :) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0483607/

Escape From L.A. is a good movie too but not as good as the first one, IMO. Yeah, humanity is fucked. It is only a matter of time.
 
Book of Eli wasn't mentioned so far.

Kinda controversial regarding its own plot logic, but is nonetheless well-made. Good actors, great PA scenery and amazing soundtrack. If you're looking for a atmospheric PA movie, look no further.

The Day After and Threads I haven't seen yet, but I heard they were good.

Book of Eli definitely gives off a Fallout kind of vibe. I was reminded of the Fallout games many times while watching it. Good movie.
 
Turbo Kid (2015)

And considering I don't really view it as a zombie film (although it basically is a zombie film):

28 Days Later (2002). Haven't seen 28 Weeks Later (2007).

And come to think of it The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2 (1991) are technically post-apocalyptic films.

Also, adult John Connor looks badass:

Man, forgot all about that one. Still stands up today and depressing as fuck.
Watch how a nice elderly couple that could be your grand parents fall to propaganda and misinformation about nuclear war and radiation, and the optimism and memories of their youth during the Blitz makes them badly prepared for what World War 3 and surviving after actually details.

The Day After and Threads.

I found Threads a lot more realistic than The Day After. Somehow the US government still manages to continue and try to oversee the reconstruction of the nation (okay, from over the radio), while in the other movie it was clear that post industrial/service oriented society was doomed to collapse as without infrastructure and the resources and products of an industrial nation it was almost impossible to main a civilian command structure. (hence the title Threads, everything these days in our society is connected with another. Some pieces fall away, the whole structure collapses)
Things went from local martial law to worse before finally collapsing into a feudal/agrarian society that could barely eke out an existence.
Knowledge suffered a lot with a lot of it no longer relevant such as children from survivors watching a badly degraded educational tape about animals that are almost all gone. (God, I had to tear up when I realized that probably all cats are gone extinct, either by the war or being eaten by survivors). A lot of them could not even speak fully English any more after a few generations as there were no teachers any more.

I still want a Terminator Future War movie based on that future and not the crap we got with Salvation.
Or a video game. Terminator Dawn of Fate was nice except for that damn camera, and Future Shock got the right idea but it really needs an update.

No more time travel stories, especially not by writers who have no fucking idea what it details and instead think it is the scientific version of "A wizard did it!"
Time travel is no excuse to come out with all kinds of ridiculous wank that messes with logic.

Preaching to the choir on this. Terminator Salvation is so frustrating because I thought there were some decent visuals and ideas in it ruined by a dumb plot and some dumb action scenes.

And seriously, why the fuck didn't they stick to the original badass visuals?
 
Anyone seen "the Colony" ? I heard mixed reviews about this one. Seems to have visually pleasing shots, though.

"How I live now" is pretty good, but very different. Not an action movie. Follows the story of a teenager who was at some sort of summer camp when the war started, tries to keep living as a normal teen for as long as possible, even if it means ignoring the obvious end of the world around her.

The recent "Dredd" is great. Best thing that could have happened to the Dredd universe. Sadly, met a distribution failure, but Karl Urban and Lena Headey rocked in this film.

Let's not forget "12 monkeys" and "Children of men". Two very creative movies.
 
Yeah, Eraserhead is fun.
Also, I still need to watch Snowpiercer as it stars one of my favourite actors.

I'm surprised no one has said Mad Max, but that's rather obvious.

Also, not really post-apoc, but Grave of the Fireflies is a decent anti-war anime film.
It's pretty sad, but enjoyable at the same time.
 
I am legend is a decent popcorn flick but if you want any substance (or you're just looking for the best version of this story) then I suggest you read the book.
 
Turbo kid. It's easily one of the best if your into schlocky b-movies.

Trigun. Yeah it's not a a movie but it definitely has a awesome mad max feel to it.
