post apocalyptic flicks?

Suaside-

You should watch Blood of Heroes

Also called Salute of the Jugger or Salute to the Jugger.

which could thought of-
"What kinds of sport might the Vault Dweller play."

I mean, any game where the trick is to put a dog's skull on a stick within 100 stones three times can't be all bad.
Plus it has vaults.

No zombies, no ghouls, no explosions, no gunfights, no "I have to save the world", no giant tentacled monsters, no triffads, no bullshit.

This is a movie about post-apocalyptic sport.

Rights one commentator-
"The juggers are coming!" is a shout that strikes both fear and excitement into the hearts of the villagers. These wretched people, living in the Mad Maxesque world of post-nuclear devastation will now have to defend the honor of their village by playing against a wandering band of Juggers.

This game is the centerpoint of the movie. It's a brutal match of American football and medieval warfare. Both teams will try to get a dog skull on a stake at the opposite ends of a small playing field. Only problem is that only a small, lightly padded player (the Qwik) can touch the skull, and all other players are armed with clubs, chains, mallets and bad attitudes.

Needless to say, the game can get brutal, broken bones and gouged eyes are common enough. But once the game is over, the real insights into the world this movie creates are made. There is no brutal rivalry outside the playing field, only a camaraderie that can stem from knowing what you both have been through. The winners are treated to a feast, no matter how poor the village, for the player's blood has brough some exitement into their otherwise dreary and hopeless lives.

I will not spoil the plot here, but needless to say, the young elements of the wandering band of Juggers, which is led by Sallow (Rutger Hauer), will not long be content to fight in backwater villages for little money and poor entertainment (a village of starving peasants can only provide so much).

On the technical side, this is not a brilliant movie, clearly made on a low budget, most of which was probably spent on actors. But movie itself is a great masterpiece, showing more and more of the "world" in which the Juggers live with every time you watch it. Small things will speak volumes and prove true the old saying: A picture speaks more than a thousand words.

Also the action scenes, while they do not contain the speedy cars and flashy wrecks of Mad Max, are still full of adrenalin and will leave thinking about why the game of Jugging is not played already.

Seen Blood of Heroes, Loved Escape From New York, Mad Max was positively spiritual. Fell in love with a little low budget flick, Hell Comes to Frogtown. Check it out if you hadn't, you might like it. Another little known, but creepy post apocalyptic movie is Defcon4. See that one, it has an early 80's feel to it and they used a California survivalist as a consultant. Miracle Mile, if you didn't see it, is awesome, as is its soundtrack. A paperback (part of the series) you can sink your teeth into is "First, you fight" with a cool cover. Everyone knows Stephen King's The Stand, but Robert Mc Cammon's Swan Song is much more of a post apocalyptic story. THAT one has an actual vault dwellers (before the FO was on the drawing board even).

"Seksmisja" is the best post-apoc movie evah.

Think of it as life in a gigantic Vault 69.

It's a Polish movie from the early 80's.

Oh,yes,I love "Sexmission" too, since I don't speak Polish I don't know if it's better that way,but it's fun and good with text too.(I found it last year after wondering what it was called ever since I saw it on TV some 20 years ago...)

i just saw The Quiet Earth ('85), which could be classified as a non-violent PA movie, i guess.

the concept is interesting enough to at least see it once: a man wakes up in an empty world... he broadcasts radiomessages, but he just cant find anyone.

If you liked that one,I think you'll like these two too:
Stranded,(it's not PA,but revolves around people rather than action)
Iit's about a mission to -Mars IIRC- and they're stranded, without any hope of being saved...sure,the end is pretty expected and so on,but it works as a portrait of people and their minds IMHO.

Silent running (1972,which could be considered PA,even if it takes place on a space ship)
They have the last remaining trees from earth on it and Bruce Dern makes a good job playing the only one who cares about nature.

Other movies I like are:
Dead end drive in (Australian film, where they've turned a drive in theatre into a prison/camp for the poor/unwanted)

Undead (humouristic zombieflick, but nice and fun,but it has to be seen as a comedy)

Death run (it has a nice story with two "kids" waking up and facing a PA world after being put into sleep by their mother, kind of like the people in the vaults apart for being in suspended animation)
If you just look on the quality of S F/X it sucks.(I think it's Australian and from its look I'd guess made back in the early -80's....couldn't find anything about it on imdb though and the nfo is not around anymore...)

1984/Nineteen eighty-four (not sure whether they constitute as PA though and not sure which of the -56 made or -84 made I like best though, they both are good...what they're about shouldn't be a mystery to anyone)

Empire of the sun (a Spielberg movie,it isn't PA per se,but the camp and so on over-all feel of it has PA qualities to it)

Edit:
Thanks for all the movies I've completely missed BTW,I'm going to look into them.

Zardoz was only mentioned once -it's a real head trip and everyone should watch it. Quite different from the usual Mad Max /A boy and his Dog scroungy stuff, but very good.

I liked Tank Girl well enough.
Oddly enough Barb Wire with good ol' Pammy Anderson.... well I shan't say it's excellent or anything, it's actually passable. Definitely watchable if you find it cheaply and are looking to kill a few hours. Better than Cherry 2000, which is one of those "So bad it's good" movies.

I think I've seen every movie listed at PA Movie Mania and quite a few they haven't listed. Should I kill myself now?

Zardoz is great. That was one of those movies in the early 80's my father made me watch along with Road Warrior and A Clockwork Orange. The Wizard of Oz revelation, Sean Connery wearing the gayest costume I've ever seen, a giant stone head that ate people and books. That's all my warped mind can recall.

Burst City is a Japanese PA flick featuring some Japanese punk rockers, hard to understand it even with subtitles but it's about a whore that gets murdered in a PA world and um....a battle of the bands.

Cyborg- A post apoc karate/Van Damme flick? Crap.

I think the only Van Damme flicks I have like were the ones in Hong Kong with the twins, Bloodsport, Legionaire and the one in Louisanna based on "the Most Dangerous Game."

The problem is that all these movies seem to be the same.

From IMDB:
IMDB Trivia said:
This film was conceived to use the costumes and sets built both for an intended sequel of Masters of the Universe (1987) and a live version of 'Spider-Man'. Both projects were planned to shoot simultaneously by Albert Pyun. After Cannon had to cancel deals with both Mattel and Marvel because of their financial troubles, they needed to recoup the money spent on both projects. Then Pyun wrote the story Cyborg (1989). Some network television still give the film's title as 'Masters of the Universe 2: Cyborg' which often confuses many into thinking a sequel to that film was made.
Sounds like a real winner.

That list is great! Its got lots of movies, but also their pictures and descriptions...the person who made it did alot of work.

Too bad they mostly look like 3rd party low-budget action romps. Take note of the large amount of "group of survivors vs. gang of raiders, mob boss, mercenary, mutant, etc." as well as the more surprising "brave band of super-feminists take over the world".

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

I just seen "28 Days Later" Excellent film, esp gioven the low budget it was made on. Acting is commendable. Keep an eye out for the sequel - 28 Weeks later.

Remembered another one but ummm I don't know if it qualifies as a movie since its basically just a slideshow of photographs...
The Pier (a french film)

I was told that 12 monkies was based on it

This is my first post - I hope it's not classed as spam.

You have all put together a great list of films, although you have missed out all the Italian low-budget junk such as The New Barbarians, Endgame, 2019 etc. Great fun bad films.

I started a post-apocalyptic movies website a couple of months ago and have a list of close to 200 films now. Please have a look if your interested. Tons of pictures for all the films I have reviewed so far.

I am a whore for zombie flicks. Zombie horror-survival is easily my favorite genre. 28 Days was amazing. Although on a more post-apocalyptic vein for zombie flicks are some of Romeo's latest x of the Dead ones, particularly Land of the Dead, if memory serves right. Hell, there might as well have been a nuclear bomb in that one, given the state of decay that the entire place was in.

My favorites are probably 'A Boy And His Dog', 'Testament', 'Soylent Green' & 'The Omega Man'.

As for the newer movies, I've just seen '28 Weeks Later' and I basically think it's pretty good.
