Rage Trailer

The beginning looks pretty good, but my interest takes a massive plunge as soon as they get to the gameplay.

The music (call it... dramatic movie revelation) grated me the wrong way and made me want to mute the damned thing. The gunplay looks very bioshock-ish, in that the guns appear to handle like toys and don't look very fun at all to shoot. Boring enemies with boring ragdoll animation being killed by boring guns. Hooray.

The vehicular combat looks just as bad. Like a bad port of twisted metal with better graphics and none of the charm.

id's history as a gaming company can be summed up thusly:

Great creators of game engines. Terrible designers of actual games.

Up until gameplay it looked what I hoped Fallout 3 would be (if it weren't going to be similar to the first two).

Made me wish it was an RPG. The gameplay is pretty much what I expected so I'm not disappointed. Looks like it could be a fun FPS.

It looked nice until the end segment.

Yeah, because Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 were terrible games, right?

God, I hate this accusation of id. It's completely baseless, and yet has permeated the internet completely.

A forum member on my site is currently there and saw Carmack himself along with the trailer, interesting hearing how the activity at QuakeCon is working out.

It is if you've ever designed levels yourself or played countless shooters and learned how everyone despises monster closets and corridor shooters.
The fact that it has both of those makes it a nuisance to play, you don't even have to aim so much as look down a narrow passage and fire your gun, it's not much of a game.

Oh come on, Doom 3 is a blast to play on coop. All of those cheap scares and zombies popping out of the walls behind you when you pick up a big pile of armor/health go from being tiresome to cheesy and fun.

Things like having your buddy sprint ahead to steal a big box of ammo, while you're sitting back and laughing as he takes a fireball to the ass from the imp that just popped through a panel behind him.

Solo play... eh, I didn't care for it. But coop on the other hand has offered me three full runs through the game with hilarity every time.

For fuck's sake I hate it when people attempt to defend a game by pointing out fucking mods, co-op came built in on the Xbox edition of the game only, and that had its own share of horrible problems, notably that it was a terrible port.

I've never designed levels but I've played countless shooters and the game is fine. It's nothing spectacular and definitely not without its problems but not a horrible game. It's an average little corridor crawler and I can think of so many FPS that are a lot worse.

Also, Quake 3 was one of the best multiplayer FPS ever. The first two were pretty freaking amazing for their time as well now that I think about it.

Really? How do you justify Doom 3's idiotic design model of maintaining the fast pace of the original Doom titles while at the same time tightly packing it into tiny little corridors? The imbecilic level design that never had anything interesting happening and for the most part was less intuitive and expansive than the original Doom's, not to mention the stupid movement patterns I pointed out above.
The game was a tech demo, but it was also horrible shit, it wasn't just average, it was mind numbingly boring, it constantly made concessions in gameplay in order to maintain framerate so they could crank out visuals that were worse than Half-Life 2's large interesting varied environments with crappy textures that still managed to look better, so, it was badly optimized as well.

The game is poop, it offers no challenge, no variety, the bosses are just long tedious firefights with uninspired weaponry that was only interesting back in 1994. I was amused that they had decided to remake the original Doom but make it a worse game even in the face of aging.
Doom 3 is really really crap, and Carmack admits this, average is something like Unreal 2 or hell, Bioshock, Doom 3 is just poorly made, so it can't even be given the mercy of "kind of fun".

And don't get me started on "Monster closets in Doom 3? Bitch you ain't seen nothing yet" Quake 2, that game is also a massive turd, it's pretty ironical that the man behind Daikatana was the only person keeping id from turning Quake into a disgustingly generic and poorly designed piece of crap like Quake 2. I've never been so bored by a shooter, even Daikatana kept my interest to a greater degree with its sheer inanity.

yup... not only does it put the setting off, but it also simply feels cheap recycling... if you're going to have that kind of enemy, at least make it different and unique.

Well, eyenixon, you don't sound like you will change your mind and you will probably find something bad to say about any id game to prove your point right now but all I know is that there are a lot worse shooters than Doom 3 out there. I played it a long time ago so I don't remember much but I do remember having fun with it, more so than I ever did with something like Raven's Quake 4 or Fallout 3 for example. I know that for a fact because I actually finished the game. And so what that it's a demo of the engine, so is Crysis and it's not a horrible game.

Maybe you have incredibly high standards when it comes to FPS but then I wonder what the hell is a good FPS for you beside Half-life 2? Also, maybe you shouldn't compare it to the first two Dooms, it's not the same game anymore.

Actually, yeah, IMO they weren't good games.

DOOM was fun, but the level design was atrocious. DOOM 2 and 3 were simply more of the same, with little innovation. The DOOM engine though was terrific, and lead to great things (including "Heretic" which is one of my favourite FPS's).

Quake (and it's sequels) was, again, an amazing engine, but a boring game, IMO. So much brown, and ugly. Thankfully, it gave birth to Half Life, amongst other things.

So, IMO, id makes great engines, but fairly weak, very brown, FPS's.

An example of a company who can do both (make engines and great games) well: Epic.

RAGE

there isnt much known about the game at this stage beside that it will be a post apocalyptic game (probably FPS with RPG elements) that its developed by ID and that Bethesda is in the picture.

i read few reviews and its looks very good, at the moment it looks like what FO3 was promised with many little touches that separates it from FO3 average crap.

but its suppose to feature also racing and many MP features, who knows maybe with some modding it can be more...
