Recommend Me Some Old Games

Im an RTS nut and im debating on whether to get Age of Empires II or Empire Earth after seeing this thread. Thoughts?

Warhammer 40000: Final Liberation is awesome, despite it's age. It can be hard to get though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

Interesting to see how many different favorites people have (and how many of them I haven't tried). I'll have to do some more research and decide what appeals to me most. I think I'll make a big list of all the suggestions and examine them one by one.

I'm probably leaning against RTS-type games. I've played some I liked, but I generally find them tiresome if I have to control each unit individually. Just a matter of taste.

I'm leaning toward games that still have active modding communities. That's always a good sign.

Both Disciples games came with map editors, so there's a plenty of fan-made maps and even campaigns if you dig around a bit. There's also a mod for Dis2 that completely re-balances the game, though I'm not sure if it runs properly on the English version of the game (it's Russian). Unfortunately, most of the modding community went over to re-making Disciples III into a decent game since its release.

Talking about active modders reminded me of some other games though. Not quite as old, but if you never played/owned TOEE, you probably should, and Circle of Eight is probably one of the most famous and consistently hard-working modding circles. They've fixed a ton of original bugs, introduced an expansion-worth of new content, and there's even one guy who's trying to implement the Keep on the Borderlands module on the engine, and another who is trying to write a new engine for the game.

If it doesn't run on my 386, it's not "aged".
Eh, but you are a prehistorical venerable lizard, Per! Nothing is aged when compared to you.

I've got two copies of that, I think it's the only game my dad every completed, despite having to do the last mission twice because an enemy tank had got stuck in a wall.

Warzone 2100 always reminded me of a RTS version of Wild Metal Country.

Yep, I've played ToEE through several times. Great combat.

I'm probably leaning away from fantasy, as I'm pretty burned out on that genre.

Games i played way past their release date and really liked:
Theme hospital
Syndicate wars
Quake
Final doom
Powerslave
Heretic/Hexens
Strife
No one lives forecer 2

Just google GoG, go on their site and take your pick.
Done.

Really interesting selection they've got. Frankly, I would love to get SMAC, but why on earth is it not packaged with the expansion? I'm not buying an old game without its expansion.

Agree about SMAC especially considering that the expansion made the game better in every way.
