Recommend Me Some Old Games

Rare gem? Not so sure. The story was pretty good, but the gameplay... The soul bar ended up being more annoying that interesting, and I absolutely hated how they basically threw the entire crafting system from OC out of the window and replaced it with a new one that was entirely too simplistic to be entertaining at all.

Im 2 months into Ultima Online (UOGamers Hybrid Free Shard, PvP, no Trammel)

Im in a guild that uses no magic at all, which is really a handicap, but whatever its a roleplay guild of Knights, so its fun as hell being the underdog.

Fuck WoW and reading quests, we make up our own quests! And the world works perfectly for it! In order to go from a squire in my guild to a full Knight, I had to go slay an Ancient Dragon. Simple right? It turned into the most epic questing experience Ive had in a game in years! What stared as a simple "kill X beast" adventure ended up becoming a tale for all the bards to tell!

My problem with nwn was that it was just plain ugly...
Hairy-butt ugly. For my money the ugliest game I've ever seen. Even the UI and the in-game text is ugly. NWN never looked good, ever. It's hideousness was exacerbated by the fact that it was supposed to be an improvement on the Baldur's Gate games with their beautiful, interesting, unique 2D background sceneries -- not to mention ToEE, which is gorgeous.

The only redeeming quality of NWN is the user module-building community. If you haven't played Stephan Gagne's modules, go and download all of them right now and run through them in order. Penultima, Penultima Rerolled, Elegia Eternum, Excrucio Eternum, and The HEXCoda series. If only you didn't have to play NWN to experience them...

Actually the UI is very good - good-looking and very functional. Probably better than in (almost) an any RPG game I've ever played. Spell effects look pretty as well. The models though... But well, that's how most 3D looked in that era. Neither did BG2's models look great, you just couldn't really see them because of fixed iso perspective :P Environments were only so-so, but it still managed to create the atmosphere, so I was content with it then, and still accepting now. Overall, I think you're being a bit unreasonable. Most games looked awkward in that 2D to 3D transition time, and the difference for those previously relying heavily on static 2D art is probably the starkest.

TOEE does look much prettier, but considering that it was virtually unplayable on release... It's been 7 years and fans are STILL fixing it.

Last week I re-played The Dig again - still love it. Even after yet another playthrough I think there are some parts that are overly complicated, but I still consider this my favourite point-and-click game next to some of the Monkey Islands.

I remember playing UO on Hybrid. Great times, being a IDOC hunter ^&^
How many players are there now? I mean - Online in peak hours. As far as I remember when I was playing it was something like 700-1500.

What's the legal status of old games - are they public property if their publisher or owner no longer exists?

It depends. Sometimes, they become abandonware and are mostly free to download, sometimes not.

Naw. It's not all about the 3D, it's about the style. There's no other game that constantly pokes me in the eye with how ugly it is every time I play it. I mean, Gothic came out a year before NWN, and yet I don't spend all my time playing Gothic annoyed with it's appearance.

Given the modding potential and support NWN had, ToEE would've been an all-time great.

I remember playing the demo version of The Dig and liking it. I'll consider that. Sanitarium also. Saw it on gog but it didn't catch my eye at first glance.

Personal preference, I suppose. Plus, it's not all about the graphics. Gothic may have looked better, but I could only endure a few hours of the game before uninstalling because of the rage-inducing combination of difficulty and useless, unwieldy control system.
