Recommend Me Some Old Games

Another tip, Newerwinter Nights Diamond and Divine Divinity. I got them both. They are worth it, especially NWN because it has all expansions in it.

^ A correction to that if I may, I'd say it's perfectly safe to skip the original campaign of NWN since it's fairly boring.

D.D. is cool for the writing and inventory management, but gameplay might not be for everyone (I was okay with it, but hear many people don't like it).

Yes the main campaign was crap but the addons are quite cool. Hordes of the Underdark even awesome if you like the Drow/Underdark/Planescape setting.

It always amazes me how inept studios can be with a game design or story, and how the average dude in the street, with a little time and passion, can out do them. Imagine how quickly those game would have died if they weren't designed to be modded - Morrowind and NWN are perfect examples of this.

TBH, the two expansions for NWN were still great, and they were made by the same people afaik. And while I did play a few good NWN modules, I don't recall any that beat SoU expansion in either quality or entertainment value.

They said that to me too many times already, that the SoU is awesome. I played only the original campaign back when it was out. But that's why I pointed out to Diamond version, most up to date and has all the classes available as well as expansions for a fairly miserable price, compared to DLC of many games today.

I got NWN a few years back as a present with the expansions, played through the original campaign, found most of the plotting and voice acting horrendously bad but the gameplay OK since I was very interested in D&D3 at the time. Then I immediately created a new character to start the first expansion and went through the opening battle and basic exposition. But there was something, not sure what, that made me leave it there and never go back.

Prince Of Persia The Shadow and the Flame for the SNES

Easily the best game on the SNES and my first (and to this day favorite) game ever

I'm slowly building an urge to buy some old games again. What I'm looking for are games that have stood the test of time -- games that have been around for years and still have an active cult of devotees.

Stood the test of time, been around for years, and still have an active cult of devotees?

Although if that's a little too old, then I can recommend some games:

JRPG - Chrono Trigger
RTS - Starcraft
TBS - Medieval: Total War, the Old Civilisation games

Yes, it's a great game. Still there is not a single player mode included, only a hot-seat multiplayer sessions are available. :)

Hmm...you guys are trying to get me started on a NWN rant again. I won't do it! I won't!

Suffice it to say there are a handful of user-made modules I think are brilliant, but I can't bring myself to replay them because the ugly, clunky, intolerable experience of interacting with NWN makes me want to ram a piston rod through my skull. :D

Already have that one. Checkers too.

You could buy one of those fancy mechanical Turks (leprechaun not included) or invest some dollars in one of those new IBM personal computer thingies.

Feel free to rant, I enjoyed the game for what it was. Wasn't all thet clunky for its time, either.

Also, a few games for your list:

Worms Armageddon
Etherlords 2

My problem with nwn was that it was just plain ugly, the creatures and races only loosely resembled their PnP counterparts (whereas the NWN2 team beautifully modelled their creatures after the monster handbook)

And i really have to say it, Bioware is just an expert in creating Characters that don't fit the lore/canon of the Forgotten Realms. Studying Sorcerers, elven Druids with Human Gods, and so on...

NWN was only loosely based on DnD, but made sense overall, so I didn't have a huge problem with that. I can always play TOEE if I need my fill of DnD RAW (the only CRPG that really stuck to it afaik).

NWN2 may have looked better graphically and was a tad more true to DnD, but the story wasn't really as good, and the overall quality of the product was inferior. Say what you want about NWN1, but it was a solid game, while NWN2 was a buggy mess with huge balance issues. NWN2 OC was definitely superior to NWN1 OC, but was still embarrassingly bad overall, especially the ending. MoTB was enjoyable, but I can say safely that I've had more fun with NWN1 SoTU/HoUD. NWN2 SoZ was pretty much useless for all purposes but new modding options.

There is another tip: Heroes of Might and Magic III (not sure if there is an active modding community related)

What about Mysteries of Westagate... the NWN 2 expansion everyone forgets about.

Wasn't that a "premium module" or something? No idea, I was pretty burnt out on NWN2 by the time I got to SoZ, so I never even tried that one.

Yeah, MotB was one of those rare gems... everything after couldn't compare to it.
