Red Dead Redemption

It's fun and looks and sounds great, and I liked most of the story, especially Act II in Mexico, and Act III in the foresty/snowy/plains region, But I couldn't tell whether it was lampooning it's setting like the GTA games did in theirs, or whether it was trying to be serious. This was frustrating in Act I, where it felt like every character was an annoying hillbilly stereotype(I can see myself skipping every cutscene in this section of the game if I ever play it again), and in Act II, where all the Mexicans were slobs.

I started to play this on my xbox the other day... is anybody else playing this online with XBL? If so, PM me and we can add each other and give it a whirl online.

It is, it's basically riffing on the ol western films so stereotypes abound.

That's too bad. I'd like a serious attempt at a western game. Still, if it's good game it's a good game.

It's basically a deconstruction of all the different kinds of Westerns.

The first area is basically the old school Westerns, Mexico is spaghetti Westerns and the last is the modern Western.

That's how I saw it at least.

Yeah, that's pretty fair. Or at least, that's the setting. The storyline is pretty serious and not a parody whatsoever. The problem is that some of the individual (side)missions and random things that happen around the world do feel like a parody, like the guy trying to build a flying machine or the constant abducting of women in one of the towns.

I'm finding it to be a decent reproduction of films like "Fistful of Dollars" etc...
Fistful of Dollars is the movie that most reminds me of the way video games are written. There are "factions", and Clint "sides" with certain factions only to double cross them later...

That's not actually something you can do in this game. The storyline is good, but pretty linear.

I actually prefer it this way, as it allows for a fairly decent and cohesive narrative that isn't muddied up with having to come up with character reactions for all types of characters.

Also, Marston is a pretty cool character, and I enjoy playing him in this game. Much better than that Serb in GTA IV.

I actually liked Niko a good amount, there wasn't a whole lot to him, and that was the point. He was just a point of view character so the player could view the world Rockstar created, and I loved both as well as both stories.
