Redstag Deer - Is this a joke?

    In Fallout 4, Redstag deer run away from you and only seem to attack you if you start shooting them, and even then they start running away.

    Well guess what? The second your companion or quest-important essential NPC sees one, they chase them for miles. So currently I'm waiting for Deacon to come back from wherever he ran off to so I can start a quest, because I cannot talk to him until he is done being "hostile" towards these stupid things.

    7 years of development really shows. "But this is what makes Bethesda games unique!"

    Oh whew I thought you were gonna complain about the lore of Redstag Deer.

    Also it's easy to solve the problem, just kill the deer

    What's wrong with the lore?

    Easier said than done when those things sprint away for miles and there's like 6 of them running around.

    I don't want to have to see a peaceful deer and immediately sprint after every single one just because I'm afraid these NPCs and companions will act like they are super mutants.

    I'm just wondering why the AI still plays like it's Oblivion which was almost 10 years ago.

    The 20 year old engine struggling to even accomplish what it's attempting to do now. Lets be real here, Bethesda has never been that great with AI and it's still apparent as of now. I had a gunner with a knife run at me while I was in a full set of T-51 power armor, you'd have to be a dumbass to do that.

    I admit it's a little nitpicky however I was doing the first Railroad quest (because i restarted my playthrough) where you have to "meet Deacon by the old Highway" - so when I got there he took off with Piper chasing these deer and is quite far away now with no sign of stopping. He's really bad at killing deer.

    So my gripe is that you need to talk to him to start a quest and you can't do that because he's chasing deer. Running up to him and pressing "Talk" doesn't work when he's hostile like that.

    Yeah, I often end up just shooting those in case my companion goes into murder-happy mode and starts chasing the damn thing over the map. Their meat must taste good or something.

    Albeit it was funny once to watch Strong run fruitlessly after it with his battleaxe while my character was stting there, with her perfectly good .50 sniper rifle holstered and a smirk on her face.

    AI just works man. Just like when Gunners shoot Mini nukes at melee range trying to hit you through the ground under their feet.

    I didn't have much problems with the companions in the main quest..... because I never used them until recently. They are buggy as shit, will continuously turn braindead in battle, sometimes will pick locks and sometimes will not, even if the second lock is of a lower level.... 7 years my ass, the amount of AI, pathfinding and writting issues in this game makes it feel extremely rushed.

    At least it makes sense when super mutants do that with missiles - they're dumb as rocks.

    The AI seems to be good at seeking cover and sometimes dodging you but all the same problems that were in Oblivion such as what I have mentioned above are still there.

    So I started playing again, they're still chasing the deer. There were some Gunners on the Overpass and one of them ran off the bridge chasing the deer.

    Sounds like the deer's gonna clear half the map for you with no need to fire a shot. :D

    Yeah AI is improved, but when it comes to Bethesda that's really not saying much. I mean pretty much any modern FPS has better AI than FO4, and now that FO4 has basically become an open world FPS it really should be held to that standard.

    One thing I noticed is that companions, when ordered to enter Power Armor docked into a rack, are unable to just circle around. They run into the armor and then declare their task impossible. You gotta herd them behind the armor then issue the order.

    Such AI, much work.

    NPCs running away to fight everyone-and-nobody is quite common. What's better is that this can now happen during dialog, which I found out to my surprise - and it also has the chance of repeatedly happening - like you said, the radstag (radiated stag) was enough to trigger this - and where are they? Everywhere, that's where! :D

    And imagine how much fun for you IF you chase him chase the stags, you KNOW where they'll run! They'll run right to the Gunners/Super mutants/Raiders who are inevitably waiting in any direction, typically no more than a 30 second jog from anywhere :]

    Escort-type missions are extraordinarily frustrating in FO4, so I'm glad I've found very few of them so far (I avoided most of Railroad quests, because they do indeed seem more escorty than usual, with the resquing of synths and all)

    Oh yes. I just successfully escorted a Brotherhood scribe for a mission and saw her safely back to the Prydwen and the only dialogue options were to report that she was killed. So I reloaded at the Prydwen and suddenly it fixed because it just works.

    I can't name a single game that does escort missions properly. Why are they so hard to develop?

    I don't know for sure, but the only escort missions I've ever seen work properly are ones where the escorted are invincible, with the illusion of being killable. That or they're in a car.

    AI just hasn't progressed to that point yet. And yes, yes, "it's 2015". That means nothing. It just hasn't progressed to that point yet. I saw plenty of parts where Elizabeth in Infinite or Ellie in The Last of Us would've been killed had they not been made invincible.
