Rockin' out with Daesch

Probably best, I just checked the Wiki entries (yes I know Wikipedia is not infallible) on the two cities Ausir mentioned and neither are big enough.

Not big enough now but, several hundred years from now? Who knows. I never played that game myself, however, I have found references to Los being a port. If it is a port, I am curious as to how long it took to get from Carbon to Los as Carbon is a long way away from the Gulf of Mexico.

Yes, there is a port, that is why I thought they meant Los Angeles.
You are given the impression it is a big metropolis.

I'm not sure this shifting about for real-life locations makes a lot of sense. If a Fallout sequel were set on the West coast and included a new town built over Necropolis, I'd expect it to be were it was in Fallout 1, not on Bakersfield.

But it is identified as Bakersfield both in a holodisk and by Tycho.

Yes.

That invalidates what I just said...how, exactly?

I talked to Jason Anderson a bit more and he said:

With futher conversation with Chris he feels Barstow thematically is more accurate. More fitting for ghouls. So it could go either way.

So it is probably best to move Necropolis to where it is in the game after all.

How about Broken Hills, though?

There is no world map in FOBOS, and I doubt it's actually said anywhere.

It makes a fair amount of sense to *not* move around places based on a supposition that they're in same spot of a ghost town without anything in the game supporting that supposition.

They should seriously consider changing the sign off the side of the 15 freeway to say:

Barstow: More Fitting For Ghouls!

At least I'd get a kick out of it, and perhaps I'd have some reason to stop in Barstow on my way to the river, other than eating at what may be the best Del Taco restaurant anywhere.

Just north of Barstow on I-15 is the town of Baker. It is even smaller than Barstow, of course that may be a good thing since at least it has a small town in a desert feel compared to Barstow's small suburb in a desert feel. Anyway Baker is supposedly the home to the World's Tallest Thermometer.

It would make a great special encounter in a Fallout 1 mod.

God, looking at those maps really sends home how much Bethesda is dropping the ball. We're not gonna learn anything about the East Coast besides what's going on in DC. I've been there a few times and saw everything there is to see in the seven mile stretch of DC's center. A block or 2 away from the green it all turns to slums. I'd love to see a post nuclear New Haven, CT, or Rhode Island, fucking New York City. How about the Gulf Coast? Nope. Everyone gives Bethesda credit for big open exploration while forgetting Fallout 1 and 2 are like galaxies compared to their bullshit games.

That's true. Although I can see the whole small area angle in DC, I mean, I think the game area is too small, SPECIALLY with the Megaton Nuke sitting so near Washington. Blowing a nuke (you can see the explosion from D.C) so near would probrably devastate the entire region with the Radiactive Fallout. Wahoo, way to kill the game world, moron!

Also, it kinda takes out the "desolation" feeling in the wasteland and the survival angle. Why would I need to drink toilet water and eat corpses if the nearest settlement is just some hours of distance by walking? And we aren't going to have a car, which, frankly, sucks. Where I am going to tuck away my stuff, now?

I tend to agree.

Major cities on the east coast, aside from Washington D.C.:

Baltimore
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
New York
Boston

Those are just a few, of course. And, in addittion to the major cities, you have, on the east coast, places of "interest" like Gettysburg, PA, etc, where it might be interesting to see what's going on "after the war."

I have no idea how "large" a game area we'd have if F3 were comparable to F1 and F2 in that regard. However, I assume we'd be able to reach some of those places, even if we started out in D.C.

Instead, we'll spend the game trapped in the D.C. area.

BTW, what about Redding? It's also in the wrong place in FO2, but I wouldn't move it to the FO2 location on the map, since it's a real town that appears in the game under its real name.

but what is it that matters? the theoretical size of the game map, as suggested by the locations you visit, or the actual space in which you play the game? yes, Fallout 1 stretched over a much wider area but you still only had a few not-that-big locations to visit, with nothing at all in between them.

It's possible that I am mistaken but I think that recording to those maps, Shady Sands is in the middle of Nevata Test Site, a place where nearly 1000 nukes were detonated...

Tried to align those two.

Red dots are F1 map locations.
Coastline fits in 90 %

Coastline could be pretty well changed and devastated by new unstable environmental and tectonic factors, especially at rivers' mouths. (Once again: Geez! genuine maps)

Coastline match, mountains match, terrain match

Red dots - F1 map locations

Blue dots - F2 locations according to the coastline and terrain reference
Yellow dots - F2 locations according to V13, SS/NCR and V15 reference.
