Rumor: Fallout: New Vegas features

combat music (or inon zur orchestral shite for that matter) is the same manipulative fluff that films use for mood music...(i.e. scary scene = discordant fast strings!) come on, man. the reason Morgan's soundtracks are so beloved is because he *doesn't* adhere to this sickeningly overused cliche.

Most games over abuses music, no matter how good the band/orchestra is. It's all about the mood and the setting, and how it fits the game play/scenario/scene you happen to play a part in.

If the music overshadows the game, then it's worthless. It's like soaps or tear jerker movies, only there to manipulate the audience with cheap emotional tugs. It's nothing better than crappy montage produced for political or advertising purposes.

Crazy house/techno music?

This.

On a serious note, anybody remembers Tiberian Sun's music? Those were good PA tunes (but memory could fail me).

Yes, TS's soundtrack is fantastic. Wasn't Frank Klepacki's work, most of the ambient tracks were done by Jared Mendelson.

I am also surprised that such article would not be a cover story. New Vegas IS a highly anticipated title after all, after all the hype around Bethesda's Fallout 3.

Yea but a cover story usually has a couple of pages worth of material and screenshots (I receive GI as a result of a GameStop purchase). All this info could easily be included on a page or less. They do a little feature like that from time to time whenever they don't have enough to make it a cover story.

True. I suppose one could make a better PA soundtrack. It doesn't have to be boring tribal music.

I felt Gears of War had a great soundtrack. Say what you want about the game and it's characters, that music got stuck in my head.

No, just no. Combat music is mood mashing and it's always badly implemented. Shifting to combat music destroys the atmosphere created by the previous score, and when you're constantly entering and exiting combat it really starts to get on the nerves....

I loved the original Fallout soundtracks, they were so good at defining different places and while not very good from a musical standpoint, they were perfect as soundtracks for that game.
It depends on the game but I generally agree, especially with western RPGs. It works much better in most JRPGs due them generally shifting to a different screen/view for combat. That said, Chrono Trigger is probably the best JRPG ever made (certainly top 5) and the few areas/scenes where there isn't combat music do seem to work better (especially given the great score of the game, why interrupt it with the same repetitive battle music?), though they seem odd due to that not being how the entire game is.

What?! Fallout and Fallout 2's soundtracks are perfect! Perfect for Fallout that is. I'm sorry, but I just can't understand how one can hate those soundtracks. It's just so right for those games.

I liked Fallout 3's soundtrack, but I prefer Fallout 1/2's music over 3's orchestral arrangements. Fighting a radroach does not require epic battle music. My favorite of Fallout 3's soundtrack is the Megaton theme, that's where they got it right (woo, banjo!).

As for the New Vegas rumors, hang in there, I'm sure there will be valid information soon.

Hating Fallout's soundtrack is like hating Mozart. Yeah, it's overrated, yeah, it has flaws, but finding better is a hell of a job and most people have no clue where to look.

Well, in my honest opinion, I have a feeling that the info is at least somewhat correct.

Had the info been completely falsified, then Obsidian and Beth would have jumped out of their seats in an instant to quash any news of "fun" or "innovation".

The way they are dealing with it leads me to believe that they have something in store for us regarding this info.

Are you serious?
The fallout games featured one of the best soundtracks in games I know, then they came up with this shit (fo3) and Inon Zur raped it to a new level with this orchestral shit. How can one find this actually good?
The orchestral is pretty good. I don't care for moaning and wind sounds, especially when there is a fucking gun fight going on.

no combat music is one of the reasons I love the soundtrack to the Fallout games. just imagine how fucking bored you'd be with that pompous combat music after a while, keeping in mind how long some gun fights could go on.

no thank you, no hollywood-themed combat music in my laid back Fallout playthroughs please.

I couldn't stand Fallout 3's ambient music. On my first run I just listened to Three Dawgs radio, which made it possible for me to not listen to the normal ambient music. On my second run, I've installed mods to exchange the game's music with the ones from Fallout 1 and 2. And it was the best thing that I could do, because it has made the game a lot better.

Funny, when I think of F3`s music I think about Megaton theme. Actually it is the only theme I can remember for F3 (thus I think it is great).

actualy the "I dont wanna set the world on fire" from the Fallout 3 trailer is something I remember as well and was a good choice :D

Does anyone remember the very first Fallout 3 teaser ? Boy I cant believe how ... hyped I was for Fallout 3 after that video. But when I think what we got now ... urgh I feel so dirty >_>. Damn Bethesda!

Fallout tactics is game where music does change when combat starts, and I hate that :/. (but some tracks was good).

I'd say it depends more on the quality of the music and how well it fits into the game. Although certainly you're right, works a lot better for games with a separate "battle mode".

Still, quality of music is the defining factor. Also variety, look at Last Remnant - there's a good 15 "combat music" tracks depending on area or how well the battle is going. On the other hand, FF games could do just well enough with just two tracks (regular and BOSS) because they were written by Nobuo. Can't say the same thing always works for all JRPGs.

Pompous orchestral battle scores usually fail though, agreed, unless it's completely appropriate (which it usually isn't).

This.

Holy crap, I was looking for music like this. Vocals suck bad, but love it still. If they ever did game music, I'd be like WOW.

that's a really valid point. i remember how excited i was after i saw that video and how i believed that this game was going to be totally amazing. perhaps everyone should wait until the game is released before forming an opinion or caring at all about new vegas... man, you're sort of a buzzkill, you know that?

also, mark morgans soundtrack was awesome, i couldn't stand the shit in fo3 so i used a patch that i got from right here that added morgans tracks to fallout 3, and it made the game at least 100 times better, just by creating an atmosphere.
