S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Shadow of Chernobyl

You can join certain factions, but you have to be careful not to perform quests for the opposite one(s) when you join one of them (e.g. Duty - Freedom). I'm not sure on what different endings depend, but I suppose it could be the amount of cash you have, what faction you belong to etc.
Stalker is indeed a great game, you just need to chew through some of its flaws to get to parts that lift it above other games in its genre.

Merged. Do a search next time.

I thought this forum to be way too general, when I read through it. But I can see why its might get annoying posting a new topic for every little thing.

Good news the upcomming patch 1.1 is suposed to implement Freeplay. Altough you wont play as protagonis of main story, but as another Stalker scavenging in zone.

In patch 1.1 we are implementing Freeplay.

Here is how it will work:
After passing the game with one of the good endings, a Freeplay mode will become available in the menu, as well as the Extreme difficulty level.

What it will look like:

Usually, we start at the dealer's, but... no. We are no longer Strelok, and we are not going into the heart of the Zone. The player is now a newbie stalker and gets to live a regular stalker's life, without the past heroics.

Main innovations:

- The world of the game is completely under control of life simulation.
- Parameters of the simulation have been balanced for Freeplay.
- There will be no storyline missions in Freeplay.
- All levels up to and including Pripjat' will be available.
- All smart terrain has been unblocked! The simulation is no longer bound by any storyline scenes.
- The missions in the Freeplay mode are based on the mechanics of secondary quests from the regular game, but with new types of quests.
- Some new dialogs have been added.
- New types of quests are given by various factions - Stalkers, Freedom, Duty, Military, and characters - Dealer, Barman, Saharov.
- The game is for ratings, which are given out by the aforementioned factions and characters. There will be 7 ratings from each quest giver.
- Each new rating will be rewarded. Unique items will be among the rewards.
- New unique items and weapons have been added.
- The "top 100" rating has a new algorithm. Rating of all stalkers changes during the whole duration of the game. It is valuable now.
- PDA has expanded statistics - the number of enemies and monsters killed, weapons and ammo used, shooting efficiency, time spent in locations, artifacts found, items used, unique items found, and much more.

In other words, Freeplay mode is for those who wanted to walk around the Zone after passing the game once or twice. Not to run around, completing mission quests, but to just live inside the Zone. To get the rank of the rich man of the Zone from the dealer, to collect all artifacts for the scientists, or do some of many other possible things. Simulation will be different, more life-like, now that all limitations have been removed. It will be rebalanced specifically for Freeplay, and a number of shortcomings we learned about after the release will be fixed.

Its great that they are still working to make it better, rather then droping everything and going for another project.

Personaly I hope somone makes an Fallout mod for it, by that I mean one fallout themed sector with BOS bunker with few glowing ones, wamingos deathclaws lurking around oh yeah allso armor and weapons from FO.

You can add no prefetch, to shorten the loadtimes.

"<drive>:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-Shadow of Chernobyl\bin\XR-3DA.exe"-no prefetch"

(sorry if this has been posted before)

A bit of a gravdig perhaps but started playing this game recently since it was on sale on Steam and I absolutely love it.

The atmosphere is wonderful and I actually think it looks good graphically even today. The weather effects are very nice and I like the look of most things in this game.

Love the guitar playing stalkers by the fires around the gameworld and the radio music - the feeling this game gives me is awesome.

If only FO3 could have close to this ...

Have not tried any mods yet and am not done with the game yet but looking forward to tweaking this and checking out the differences.

Will probably get Clear Sky too after this.

Thumbs up!

Try this one mod... it's called "Lexx Antigas-Armor Mod". I've heard, it adds new armors, just like stalker sunrise suit with gas masks and so on. :p

I've uploaded it long time ago on the Stalker Filefront site and short after, a small patch that is needed for the english language version.

And also try some of Dopemine Cleric's homemade scrotum ointment.

For when you need to have your balls shine.

That's great Daimyo, I bet Stalker was on your list for a while. It's definitely a must-play for people on these forums.

I'm actually replaying the game right now also, with the oblivion lost mod. As everyone else claimed it's a huge improvement on the vanilla. I'm still at the early stages, just about to enter the first one of those x labs. I'm kinda scared though.

He, he - yeah some of the environments are scary indeed.

I will check out the mods when I have finished the game - am in Yantar at the moment.

Have encountered an annoying (bug?) thing though - in the Duty camp (where the barkeep is) a single stalker is red to me - i.e an enemy. He shoots at me on sight and if I fire back and kill him the entire camp want to kill me because apparently there is "a murderer on Duty territory"

He sists in a crossroads I have to cross to get to and from the bar so I cannot miss him ...

Have just run past him so far hoping he will despawn before I return.

I never attack stalkers in the wild - only bandits/soldiers/monsters etc, so he cannot remember me from a previous incident either ...

I always had someone (the same guy everytime) yell "get out of here stalker" at me everytime I came into the Duty camp from one particular direction. I don't remember him shooting at me though... he was up on a cat walk so I just ignored him.

Yeah it is not him. nor the Duty guards at the off limits location. It is a random stalker ...

Smells like a bug ...

Daimyo: If you just started playing Stalker you should skip Clear Sky and jump right to Call of Pripyat. Way better than both SoC and CS.

And you shouldn't be playing Stalker SoC without this obligatory masterpiece: http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009

"If you haven't played 2007 most immersive, atmospheric shooter, or you're back for replay, this mod is for you. The world of STALKER like you've never seen before with graphics 2.0. It significantly updates the game, while preserving the original story and gameplay. This is, finally, the finished and complete version of STALKER - as good as it could possibly have been on release."

Really? Glad to hear. I was originally planning on doing CS before CoP. Does anyone else agree on skipping CS? How buggy is CoP?

This complete mod looks nice. I guess it's mostly graphics oriented, how does it compare to Oblivion Lost in terms of gameplay?

Did you do any of the kill the stalker jobs for the Barkeep or Bar Patrons? People do take issue when you kill their friends.

Or maybe you clipped him with a stray round while shooting at someone else.

Mods are fun but most are terribly unbalanced or change stuff I like, anyone know of a standalone blow out and compatible improved ai mod?

Hmm depends. CS has some good things... and it's better than CoS. Still... yes... it's very buggy. Never finished it, but tried 3 times already. Last time it worked very well for most of the time, but then, near the end of the game, I got hit by a big script bug and no NPC worked anymore. So...

CoP looks very good so far. Didn't found any bugs yet and also never got a crash since I am playing it (approx 2 days). Also the quests are a lot better and even have some consequences...

Now I wish I would have a SoC with all cool CoP elements, because CoP is how SoC should have been since the beginning...
