Should I stay or should I go?

The problem with waiting for an Obsidian-done follow up to Fallout 4 is that they'd still be saddled with the Creation Engine. They may even be forced to use that terrible Fallout 4 dialogue system. Gamebryo was the Achillles heel of New Vegas, and I doubt Bethesda would let Obsidian use anything other than the Creation Engine. They've also lost a few people including Chris Avellone, who did some excellent work on New Vegas, though they've still got Fenstermaker and he was responsible for some of NV's best quests. Obsidian would still make a better game than F4 (it wouldn't be difficult!) but would it be as good as New Vegas?

Honestly I've learned to expect the worst when it comes to Fallout. I'm still hoping that someone will do a real spiritual successor to Fallout, so we can leave Bethesda to whatever it is that they are doing. I would have loved to have seen Van Buren and that untitled Troika post-apoc RPG released...but ah well.

They also gained a certain Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, and Chris Taylor might also be in their grabs should the need arise (he's already making the PoE card game for them).

That said, though, I don't think anybody should "wait" for an Obsidian Fallout. Tim and Leonard are guessed to be working on something with the Unreal engine, Sawyer is probably knee deep in PoE 2, Tyranny is still in the making, Armored Warfare is still in the making, and so on.

Somehow I completely forgot Leonard and Tim had joined Obsidian haha. I didn't know about Chris Taylor or the Unreal Engine project either. Perhaps I should be a little more optimistic!

So I come back from work and this thread has 3 pages now. Cool. What a nice community.

Since it all transformed into a versus. I won't go as far as saying the Bethesda games are BAD. I just think they definetly feel more like spin offs. They propbably should have not made them "Fallout 3" or "Fallout 4" since they were so diferent but I have to keep in mind the games are made by completely different business company (And when you aquire a franchise I think you can do whatever you want, sadly). What bothers me is that they did so fine with New Vegas, so they had it and let it slip.

I would say your best bet would be to spice New Vegas up with mods.

Try some expansion mods like Beyond Boulder Dome:

You could try overhaul mods such as FOOK or Project Nevada:

been there and done that, but thanks man.

Hi to everyone (I am new) I have a question and think this is the best place to get an answer.

Context: I just need to play Fallout, last two years I've been playing over and over New Vegas but I just need something new. I tried FO4 before but could ony go so far, as I was consumed by rage at all the limitations this "open world" had.

Question: Is a similar follow up game like what New Vegas was to FO3 in any kind of development? Should I wait a little longer? Or should just give up on this game since I read not even good mods are out there to fix it. I don't know.

In my experience either a game dies or becomes an abomination. I thought the later happened in FO3 but then New Vegas appeared and I thought "Hey, maybe they learned." Then with FO4 they ruin the essence again. I just need closure but I am not nearly as informed as you guys are.

none sadly, but there's some good news: There's a Fallout NV mod in the works that is allowing MULTIPLAYER, both co-op and PvP, should be fucking hysterical with a group of NMAers traveling the wastes together.

That mod is still in its initial stages. Progress is slow going. It is safe to bet it will die out like all of the other Fallout multiplayer mod projects. I do hope this one doesn't, and that I am wrong. I would love to co-op New Vegas. I used to mess around with a friend and have one person on the mouse and one on the keyboard. That is probably the closest thing to a co-op Fallout experience I will ever get.

That end part was kind of sad. But it would be nice to play at least a two player fallout game of exploration.

that sounds amazing that would make me beyond happy

Have you tried TTW? It might bring a new life to your Fallout 3 and/or Fallout New Vegas.
TTW is a project that allows to play Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas at the same time using the FNV more polished engine. It also adds FNV stuff to the Capital Wasteland (we made recipes, harvestables, changed all weapons and armor to fit the FNV system, all FO3 specific weapons have iron sights, can use the different types of ammo and some have weapon mods, placed doctor bags around, placed reloading benches, campfires for cooking, all food and water specific to FO3 now works with hardcore mode, plenty of FO3 and FNV mods that were converted to affect both wastelands, we even have TTW specific mods).

Well I know I am shamelessly tooting my own horn, but many people said that TTW gave them many new hours out of the old FO3 and FNV games. So I thought it might help you too.

That sounds good, can I travel with NV NPC to Washington?

Yes.
You can travel with any NPC to and from each wasteland.
Also we have been working on companions for a long time now and we have a plugin you can grab from our forum that give companion perks to the Fallout 3 companions, makes the companion wheel work for FO3 companions, give both FO3 and FNV companions a place you can send them to wait in the other wasteland (for example Lily will wait in the Underworld in the same place as Fawkes, Butch will wait in the Kings building, etc) and we also made it so you can send the FO3 followers to the Lucky 38 suite (like you can with the FNV companions, if you get the suite) and other stuff too.

TTW will start you being born in the Vault 101 (that is the default start because it makes more sense from the continuity point of view), then you play the growing up in the vault sequence (just like FO3) and then once you get out of the vault you can play FO3 as normal (but with all the FNV mechanics of course), then you need to go to DC and find a metro tunnel behind the national archives, follow that tunnel and find the Union Station train station (the building was made by the TTW team and it was totally based on historical pics and the actual blueprints, it was also made with new assets made mostly by the team member TrickyVein). You will have to complete a short quest, deal with some ghouls and super mutants (so you should have some levels under your belt, or be very good at sneaking/using a lot of stealth boys) and then you can buy a train ticket and ride to New Vegas.

We have an optional plugin to start the game in New Vegas, in Doc Mitchell's house. But we don't recommend doing that for your first time playing TTW because the optional plugin was not fully tested and was made for people who just wanted to start in NV so there might be problems later (many users used it and never reported much problems, but we still warn people just in case).
If you start in New Vegas, then you need to find the Union Pacific Station in Freeside (again made based on actual pics and blueprints from the real world one using new assets made by the team).

Here's what you should do;

Grab a copy of GURPS from Steve Jackson Games, grab the Fallout GURPS conversion book, grab a couple friends. Make the Fallout you always wanted to play, how it was always meant to be played in the first place.

It's been very good therapy for me and my friends, we barely talk about lynching Bethesda Studio members or have Preston flashbacks anymore, and my shitposting on /r/Fallout has even gone down a whole 60%. Well, that and the trephination surgery.
