First time out of the vault
Hello,before buying a laptop i was a console player,playing games like vagrant story,metal gear series,devil may cry,silent hill...

And then i got a laptop.(weak one,with 1,8ghz monocore processor.

The best games i ever played on it were fallout and baldur.Sincethis time, i play games but have difficulties to find one that could be equal in pleasure to fallout or baldur,a clever game.

Most of games nowadays are fps,a friend of mine told me:at the moment the most important is to make money selling multi-players game like fps ,fight games or rts.

I am more a "lone some player"and i try to find 3d isometric rpg games, but except the icewind dales ,lion heart and planetscape torment,it is hard to find something.

Are clever games dead?I still do like japanese rpg even if i am a bit bored,i play plateforms games like prince of persia or tombraider, but those games wont make me stay 200 hours behind my computer.

Dont you have this feeling?Of course when i have better pc i will play games like assassin'screed or fallout 3 but it wont stay in my memory.

Do not play FalloutNOT3. FalloutNOT3 is bad for your brain. Actually you don't want to play FalloutNOT3. You want to make a HtH character with high charisma and luck and replay both Fallout and Fallout 2. Go and do that right now. Would you kindly? :)

He could also make a female character in Fallout 2 and turn her into the wasteland skank.

That's surprisingly fun though you run out of people to rock the casba with in the southern towns.

Well you haven't got Arcanum on that list of games you've played and it is one of the best rpgs out there. You may also want to try Vampire: Bloodlines (with the community patches) once you get a better computer as it is one of the only first person rpg that feels like an rpg, the other being Deus Ex(ish).

^^^^^^ Agreed. Try Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. If you enjoyed Fallout, you'll enjoy Arcanum. Battles can be fought turnbased or in RT. Both modes pretty much suck, but playing a tech character somewhat solves that, 'cause you'll be able to add more variety to your arsenal. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Maybe also look for Jagged Alliance 2? It's turnbased strategy with some RPG elements in it.

One might even tell you to check out Fallout Tactics, which is like an inferior Jagged Alliance clone, but can still be entertaining if you also happen to love post-apoc. And you can play it in turnbased mode, even though that tends to be quite boring after a while.

Truth of the matter is that there just aren't that many of these iso 2D TB RPGs out there. And the very few that are excellent have been known to most of us for years now.

Yeah, feel my pain and grief...

As for other clever games: I always thought the first installments of the Age of Empires series were really clever and perfect for lonesome players, seeing the AI really isn't that bad and can be quite challenging at higher levels. And one tends to learn a thing or two whilst playing them as well, which is always nice and can't be said about most games.

And last but certainly not least: you should check out Commandos 2. It's the best installment in the series and plays like a charm. One of the best games I ever played, without a doubt. And although not as hard as the first installment, you'll still have to use your brain to finish it. It's a strategy game that you play in RT, but gameplay-wise it has a lot in common with stuff like Jagged Alliance and FOT as well.

But yeah, the golden age of gaming is definitely over. It's all about the money now. Money and keeping the kids satisfied. Ah well...

What? Golden Ages are determined in hindsight, and the industry right now is still producing gems, but if you go by quality of average game, we're definitely not at an industry high point right now.

I should have said the golden age of RPG gaming.

'Cause that's over. And I doubt it'll ever come back.

Dudes the Golden Age of Video games was over a long time ago. Then we have been through the Silver Age, Bronze Age and until 8 or so years ago we were in the Heroic Age of video games. Now we are in the super lame Iron Age of video games.

Aside from the games mentioned here, there's the Temple of Elemental Evil; with the latest Circle of Eight patch it is, imho, one of the best PnP to CRPG adaptations, and one of the most replayable games I've seen.

I also wouldn't shun the more recent games, and other genres. There's good stuff that gets released once in a while - for example, I killed hours upon hours on STALKER(fps) single-player, Devil May Cry 3 and 4 (3p action), Witcher (arpg), Guilty Gear XX(fighter), Touhou (danmaku), King's Bounty: Legend, and Armoured Princess (tbs/rpg), Disciples I and II, with all the expansions (TBS) and many others. I'm sure you could also find lots of fun games for yourself that are not the classic cRPG like FO or BG.

Then again, there's tons of mods that restore content for FO1/2, Torment and BG1/2 that increase the games' replayability.

Also, some of the best JRPGs I've played are the ones that never got translated into English, sadly.

I don't know if it has been mentioned but Vampire The Masquerade:Bloodlines is a good choice. The KOTOR games are kind of ehhhhh, first one is decent, second one is alright but blows balls in terms of story development and closure. There's The Witcher, the gothic series, Neverwinter nights 2(with expansions) Hell, if your into adventure games there are some decent adventure games coming over the horizon. Plus, there's the geneforge games, the exile series.

Oh yes, and I agree with anyone who mentions Arcanum, that really should be your first choice.

If you are into Tactical Combat, I can also recomend Silent Storm and Silent Storm Sentinels. (There is also Hammer and Sickle but that game is really hard to follow without a walkthrough)

Ufo:Afterlight and Ufo:Extraterrestrials are also 2 games you might like if you are into tactical combat games.

Also did you try Commandoes: Behind Enemy Lines (RTS)

Ufo enemy uknown and x-com terror from the deep are 1000% better...remakes sucks thats truth if you can live with bad graphics you will love those games...

Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 are fun also Witcher is good rpg...Mount & Blade is rpg + hack & slash + rts mix in medieval very cool game...

Lionheart is a pretty good game. Too bad that the game is only half done :(. I can never stomach playing it after the diablo bits start

I tried but ran out of crossbow ammo and health potions.

Shame really as the first half is so well constructed.

That game is horrible, I didn't even enjoy the first half since it already involved you slugging through large sections of wilderness with hordes of enemies, it's too frustrating for a game with such simplistic combat. The second-half is only a larger dose of horrible stupidity.

Jupiter try some old games they gameplay is off the scale and they mostly free its like candy land for gamers who like good story and great gameplay...

For example Blood Omen Lagacy of Kain sure graphics suck but who cares if game is great?

Lionheart was a bad fucking game. Period. They implemented the SPECIAL-system, assuming it would grant the same freedom as in the Fallout games, but seeing Lionheart was just a critter infested world, you basically were forced to go for a combat sorta character.
Plus: the hybrid RPG/I'm-a-Diablo-clone-dawgunnit didn't work out very well. I got bored with it pretty damn quick.

There. I fixed it for you. :D
