DJ Slamak is correct. The Croatian translation of the Yugoslavian anthem is called "Hej, Slaveni", but the Serbian is "Hej Sloveni". That is beyond dispute.

Though my favorite song about Yugoslavia is:

Od Vardara pa do Triglava,
Od Djerdapa pa do Jadrana,
Kao niska sjajnog djerdana,
Svjetlim suncem obasjana,
Ponosita sred Balkana,
Jugoslavijo, Jugoslavijo!

Stop with the damn singing and start the ethnic violence, pointless warfare and blind hatred, will ya?

Sjeesh, you Slavs are gettin' soft!

Friends, Brothers, Countrymen.

Deep are the wounds that nationalism inflicts. It is a feeling and a movement often based on misguided historical interpretations and misplaced 'ethnic' feelings. In a continent like Europe, a continent that has been in flux for centuries and saw many unnecissairy bloodshed to forge the nationstates that exist now, nations have need of a common lowest denominator to forge a foundation of psychological unity between its peoples. Most often, that is done by hailing great historical achievements the nation or its inhabitants have once achieved.

For nations that have in recent history achieved relatively little, nationalis agitators often reach back to times long, long gone. Not long ago, when the Otztal man was discovered, some Austrian tabloids rushed to publish the news as "The first Austrian". Not much later, when they discovered the finding was just some meters inside the Italian frontier, the Italian magazines joyfully displayed: "The first Italian". Now, there's a bitter polemic about where must the frozen guy rest, according to his 'nationality'.
They seem to forget, though, that at the time he was murdered, those thousands upon thousands of years ago, he had no clue of what 'Austria' or 'Italy' were. To him, the Alps were little more than a big range of mountains bordering the valley where he lived and hunted.

Fouding nationalism on ehtnic groups that lived thousands or years ago is also rediculous for various other reasons. For one, the current inhabitors of no matter what region of Europe most likely has very little or no blood in common with the prehistoric, proto-historic or early historic inhabitants of that region. The French, for instance, who once claimed all of 'Gaul' as their historical posessions, have very little in common with the Celtic tribes that once lived there, and are mostly descendants from the Germanic Franks. The Spaniards have very little in common with the Alusians that once lived there, and are nowadays mostly descendants from Goths, Romans, Berbers and whatnot. Just like Bulgars that live in Bulgaria now have very, very little in common with the Celts that once lived there, yet are most likely descendants from Greeks, Slavs, Turks, and numerous other ethnies. If anything, the only 'people' that are related somewhat to the Bulgars in pre- or during Roman times are the inhabitants of Bretagne, Wales and Ireland. And even then.
And even if the Thracians weren't Celts, which could of course be possible, they sure as hell weren't Slavs. And the Bastarnae weren't Thracians. And so on.

Yet, even with all sorts of undeniable historical proof against them, ultra-nationalists continue to defend their views. Most often their form their own version of history, then, as the Germans and Italians in WWII so wonderfully demonstrated. They use all sorts of obscure pseudo-scientific 'publications' to found their theories on, disregarding or dismissing all the truths that have been previously demonstrated because of misguided emotional reflexes.

It's sad, really. I thought I lived in a Europe that was finally free from petty nationalism and historical manipulation, but apparently - as the recent French 'no' to the European constitution has also demonstrated - I was wrong. Shame on you all. When will reason and intelligence once again rule the European continent? When will Europeans start to work together? When will people realise that no 'people' is superior or inferior to another 'people' for any possible reason?

Well, except for the Poles. They suck.
