So as of Fallout 3, ghouls can be made instantly, huh?

Grimhound

Still Mildly Glowing
Originally I thought the whole Moira thing was a one-off fluke in an attempt to be funny. Now in Fallout: New Vegas we have it where [spoiler:840008db17]the Legion detonates a radiation bomb and [/spoiler:840008db17]people are turned into ghouls instantly. What the hell?

I also find this a rather unnecessary change, especially the large population of Feral Ghouls that are now around or the 'running zombies' of Fallout.

The original idea was way better, people only changing into Ghouls in certain circumstances and over a period of years or decades.
And again only loosing their high brain functions due to certain circumstances like the Endless Walkers from Van Buren.

It turns ya, but over long time. I don't like the ncr bomb thingy as well, but I keep telling myself that they didn't turned into ghouls right after, but some time later. It's still not cool, but better than the Moira-shit.

And yes, feral ghouls now beeing Fallout's new zombies is really shit. Didn't liked it in Fallout 3, don't like it in FNV and will most likly not like it in the next game. Ghouls are too damn common now.

I think they may have tried to do a Return of the Living Dead reference or something with the strange canisters of radiological waste being representative of Trioxin 2-4-5. If so, I can excuse it.

It's just vague as all hell unless you actually get the potential reference.

Note: If this is the case it would be a deeply concealed reference or something botched. It doesn't match any of the circumstances of the films.

That would be a better idea Grimhound, the people at Camp Searchlight having been turned into some new kind of feral mutant due to what the Legion did.

If I were going to explain it canonically? The canisters were filled with a biological weapon developed by the pre-war military. They planned to use it on the Chinese and brought it to the desert for testing.

Something that I would totally accept though are ghoul raiders or crazy ghouls armed with weapons and also talking not always acting like a simply brain damaged zombi. Ghouls never have been like the simple "zombi" to me. Hence the rockporn testcite was awesome with those ghouls trying to reach ... well that would be to much of a spoiler :3

Of course, lets have Ghoul raiders, Ghoul militias or Ghoul cults, they don't all have to be friendly.

I know people hate FOBOS/FOPOS for a good reason, but I sort of like the idea behind the Church of the Lost even though the concept design of its founder Blake turned out really stupid.

But not loads of zombie like Ghouls anymore.

Know what? No zombies of any kind.

Edit: Ghoul Slavers

I loved those nuclear-bomb-worshiping ghouls a lot. Particularly since the bomb looked like a modern warehead and not like that strange fatman thing. Fallout was about a 50s vision not about showing everything "like" the 50s which Fallout 3 did way to many times. Luckily it seems Vegas at least "somewhat" moved away from that. REally who said that the world the poast apocalyptic world had to stop right after the bombs droped, people not developing own s tyles, and such.

I still want to see The Reservation, Ghouls organizing behind a leader who is going to stick it to the humans.

I'd still like the option to play as a Ghoul. Admit it, it'd be interesting being able to heal from Radiation and having to maneuver through the insanity that is racism towards non smooth-skins

This is a really good idea and *if* it is really needed to have such "we turn everyone into monsters fast"-story, it's better to explain it with some other monster, imo. Like the cannibals in the Grand Canyon or the Gehennas in Burham Springs. (imagine feral ghouls in the Burham Springs coal mine....)

Sadly, Fallout 3 now introduced the new ghoul zombies and we will see them again and again and again. It's like when the bombs fell, everyone either died or transformed into a zombie. What the fuck.

Is there any reference to how long Searchlight has been like that? NCR arrived seven years before FNV. Maybe it's been that way since around the time of the original hoover dam battle?

Eh, one of the NCR officers who was stationed there is still patrolling the region to warn people, if that happened seven years ago I think it would be more common knowledge by now.

Wait what? [spoiler:e9edce184a]A radiation bomb detonated in Searchlight?[/spoiler:e9edce184a]
[spoiler:e9edce184a]
I thought it was because of these radiated barrels[/spoiler:e9edce184a]

In FNV, they do feel a bit out of place, just hanging about in the wastes. In Fallout3, they were introduced, I think, because the designers needed an appropriate monster to fill the extensive DC underground. In the DC underground, the feral ghouls worked well. But out in the wastes where you can just pick them off at long range... it just didn't work.
