So who's getting Halo 3 tonight at midnight??

Why did it have to be new and evolved?

Wooz is refering to how people claim it is the game that revolutionised the FPS industry. Whatever, it was simply at the right place at the right time, nothing more, nothing less. The market was getting ripe with console-kiddies who'll believe anything told to them because it's on t.v. and graphics were getting shinier. So, it sold.

I got Halo as a free gift when I received my then-new PC. I played it for a few days before uninstalling it and tossing it in the donations bin. The first few minutes of the game sounded promising, but the Covenant forces are just too damn cartoony/kiddie-tailored and yet, are presented in a serious fashion. The typical console-style FPS gameplay didn't help it, either.

Also, the sequel just further pushed me away. Halo 2 is one of the worst games I've ever played. Don't get me started on the ending, either. "LOL, I GOT THE BOMB BOSS, LET'S DO THIS! ... HAH FOOLED YOU, GO BUY HALO 3, NUB!"

And, for fuck's sake, a great many Halo fans are really stupid and annoying.

Now, Half-Life, I think, is the greatest FPS that ever graced a console platform. Then again, ever-since everything went 'next-gen' I've lost touch with console-gaming.

Also, apparently, Gamespot's PC newsletters feels compelled to mention the 360 Halo 3 in the article. I say again, it's PC newsletter. Why the fuck did I sign up to receive newsletters from Gamespot?

I like current poll results at BethBlog :)

Q: 'Are you purchasing Halo 3 this week?'
No (81%)
Yes (19%)

Interesting... the word filter made that post almost unreadable.

In any case, got Halo 3, played through the game on Heroic in co-op with my friend in a little over six and a half hours (the campaign takes longer to complete, around 10 hours, single-player).

Graphically, I like it. Everything looks really nice, there's no overzealous usage of bloom or other gratuitous effects. The organic Flood-levels look appropriately gross. Animations are good, models are well-done (finally the human faces don't look like they were butchered by a bad plastic surgeon, although I think they still look a little flat), love the explosions and effects. Some people complain that it's not as good-looking as some other "next-gen" games, but I don't agree. Probably they're just used to being blinded with bloom.

As far as sound goes, guns all sounds good, voice-acting is great, no complaints. Music: always loved Martin O'Donnell's compositions, and it's no different this time around.

Now the first of the important parts: gameplay. It feels different from Halo 2. A little more similar to the encounters in the first Halo, which is a good thing, although it's not entirely like it either. I enjoyed it. Pulled my first all-nighter in a long time going through the campaign in co-op, followed by multiplayer (only with a couple friends, but it was still a blast). I have no real complaints. It's not an "thinking-man's" shooter, nor will it appeal to those looking for non-linearity or choice & consequence or anything in that vein. Then again, it doesn't really pretend to be (ridiculous fan-boy's clamorings don't count). It's just about action, and it delivers, as far as I'm concerned. I don't doubt it doesn't appeal to some people, but nothing appeals to everyone.

I do have a couple of bones to pick. First, although I didn't notice it playing through for the first time, playing through again, I've found the addition of invisible walls as I've explored more thoroughly. This, I dislike. They never used them in Halo 2 (with the exceptions of expanses of water off beaches and going higher than a map could possibly allow in a flying vehicle), or the first that I can remember, and I don't understand why they felt it necessary to bring them in. They always designed the levels so that it was unnecessary, which is better level design in my opinion. Second, even in the knowledge that going through the game in co-op is quicker than doing it single-player, it just felt too short. I very much wish there were more levels.

The second of the important things: story. I'm... still undecided here. I like the Cortana-flashes that go on, until later when it adds the Gravemind's angry ranting that happens too often. Also, I feel that the story was kind of forced along far too quickly for its own good, which corresponds to my wish for more levels. Knowing Bungie, I'm sure it wasn't their wish for it to be that way. Either they didn't have enough time, or Microsoft leaned on them to keep it short for their perceived target audience, which is unfortunate if true. Also, I'm not fond of the ending. It just doesn't sit right with me, at all. I'm still reserving final judgment of the whole thing for when I've completed my second play through, paying close attention to what's going on and having more time to digest it.

All-in-all, I'm happy with it. I don't think its perfect, or the best thing to ever happen to the planet Earth. I especially disliked the overhype going on when I was trying to watch Spike the night before release. Ugh. Hype sucks. But it's fun, multiplayer is a blast, co-op is a blast, fixes many mistakes from Halo 2 I think (but introduces those damned invisible walls, at least in the first jungle mission). I don't think it's going to sway anyone who vehemently disliked the first two, but it might sway those who weren't as fond of Halo 2 as they were of the first. It's still Halo for Halo-fans. Can't wait to get on Xbox Live and play some CTF, or try out that new Infection game-type.

I have to say, I sorta liked Bioshock better than this. It doesn't help that I kept getting a headache when I played for more than half an hour. It was fun to see how it all ends, though. And, playing Pirate Ships on Sandtrap definitely is awesome. Nothing better to say "Yarr" into your headset while raiding an Elephant. :P

Halo. Ah Halo. I liked Halo 1 alright. It was fun for ten minutes. Multiplayer with friends was generic and okay.

Halo 2, ah Halo 2. Why did you suck so terribly? You were an aweful, messy afterbirth out of Microsoft. Your dumbing down of weapons and story, not to mention all the 1337ist ass monkey college students on Xbox live can feel like a real man for five seconds until some even bigger asshole 11 year old kid woops your ass in a deathmatch, were unbearable. Your poor attempt to advertise as "new" was laughable. You are a gaming abortion Halo 2.

Halo 3. Ah Halo 3. I will not come near you. You frighten me. Your complete and total overhype combined with brainwashed idiots that spring out to buy you without even knowing if there is anything new or anything neat, fun, or original within you. Your name alone inspires lunacy. Buying the same game three times. It's not wise. Why do it? I will use you as a drink coaster Halo 3. I will use your manual as toilet paper. And your case, will make good kindling.

My god I'm turning into 4too

Anyways, I enjoy the live-action commercial things they've been releasing. Fun to watch.

Holy crap, that's pretty cool!

Kyuu, easy with the spoilers, man. I didn't want to know from you what those Cortana flashbacks were, I'd rather the game reveal it to me.

Now about Halo.
I hated the series with a passion for a long time: I didn't like master chief, I didnt like that you could only carry 2 weapons, I didn't like the weapons, I didn't like the covenant, and I didn't like the hype. Most importanly, I thought that it had no story because I didn't pay attention to the in-game events or chatter, as I was used to console games having their stories progress only through cut scenes. However, after I started paying attention to what's going on, I got very interested. I think that the story and the whole halo concept is really cool quality sci fi. What many people don't realize is that the series was never supposed to be anything deep like Half Life or whatever, it was just a fun action game. Action, is the key word here because that's what it's mainly supposed to deliver and that's what it does very well.

I liked Halo 1 the most because it had that "was supposed to be RTS" thing in it where you would come out into an open field and fight against armies. The indoor areas were just solid, mostly nothing amazing (although Library was intense as hell) but the outdoor battles were really fun, the vehicles and the weapons and tons of enemies made for some crazy action.

Having said that, Halo 3 is so far my favorite. My gf preordered it and I've been playing it a little for a couple of days now. I haven't gotten very far but it's tons of fun. The beginning was just like any other FPS but that was a warm up, the action has gotten INSANE. Before I even entered an area I saw a wheel flying up into the air as someone crashed into someone (not scripted). After I did though, all hell broke loose, things started coming from all directions and it was fun to simply watch. Yes, the hype is ridiculous and say what you will about Halo but I personally know of no FPS that has that kind of action. There were so many in-game situations that looked like they were prerendered or scripted that I died several times just to play through those areas again.

Anyway, not every game has to be Bioshock, there should be Contras too. I don't usually go and hype games, especially those that are ridiculously hyped already. I hate Gears of War just because it's a fun little game but hyped up like it's the holy grail of action games. I think it's a 14 year old's porn with the blood and the chainsaws and the swearing. I'm not saying it's a bad game though, I just don't like it that much, after I finished it once, I had no desire to play it ever again. In terms of action or replayability it couldn't hold a candle to Halo, if you ask me. To each his own I guess, not everyone likes Halo either.

Bioshock, in my opinion, wasn't that great, either.

For me, an FPS, just like any other type of game, has to be tailored to fit its purpose. If its purpose is story, then it should be well-tailored with a good story that comes together while the character is playing the game. Cutscenes are nice, but it feels more immersive if it's happening while you're in the middle of the situation as it's happening. If its purpose is action, multiplayer, and co-op play, then it should focus on action, multiplayer, and co-op, and not pretend it has a story to offer. Of course, an FPS is based on action-elements, but it doesn't have to sell itself as a story. Thus, I think an FPS should either focus on (online) multiplayer elements, or story-driven single-player elements. Halo tries to do both, and sells itself as both. For me, it fails at both. Well, Halo 2 failed at both. Halo 1 had a decent story, but its gameplay wasn't all too impressive. The battles were repetitive and predictable, the weapons seemed like they were created for 'coolness' purposes, and the objectives were simple and bland. Halo 2 repeated those things only somehow made it worse. There are other FPS games out there that successfully deliver single-player and multiplayer action and a story-driven game far better than Halo. Halo was mediocre, Halo 2 was horrid, Halo 3, so far from my experience, is a mix between Halo and Halo 2. Sure, I guess you can say, Halo is good at being a simple, run-and-gun type of game, but I find that to be boring.

Of course, I'm just picky about my FPSs. There are very few that I can think that deliver both/either good single-player story-driven gameplay and/or multiplayer, mayhem-focused gameplay.

Just finished the game. It was about a good 5 hours long, and had the worst fucking pretentious ending to any game I have played.

Worst. Game. Evah.

Wha? All I said was that there were Cortana-flashes (I didn't even say flashbacks, as that's not exactly what they are). I didn't say what they are. Hell, I'm still not entirely sure what exactly what they were. Didn't really think that mentioning the Cortana-things or the Gravemind were really spoilers.

I dunno about worst, I've seen some games (not to mention books and movies) with some pretty shit endings. However, even after reflecting on it for some more time, I'm still pretty unhappy with the ending. It's just... ugh. Haven't been quite so unhappy with an ending since Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

I hate the Halo series for 2 reasons.

Reason 1: 12 year old fags that don't have lives play the shit 24/7 and will own your ass no matter what.

Reason 2: It seriously is not better in any area over Halflife 2 yet most console FPS players think it is the best fucking game ever.

You know what? Forget 2 reasons. I have a lot more.
There is nothing special about Halo at all. The story sucks donkey dick. The weapons are lame. The levels are too straightforward. The enemies are garbage. Duke Nukem 3d is better than Halo 3 IMO. I don't give a shit about the graphics. They may be pixelated as hell nowadays, but I like throwing pipe bombs in a room by a holographic image of myself while some dumbass walks up to it and gets blown to pieces. Not to mention the jetpacks, nightvision goggles, steroids, and all that jazz. But thats just my opinion.

They sell it really cheap at a store nearby, still not going to get it. I was considering it, but naaah. Getting Ghost recon AW 2 instead.

Dude, I think Pipe Dream has more depth than Halo 3, so I suggest GRAW2 over H3 any old fucking day.

Actually, Reason 1 hardly ever happens anymore, because said little 12 year old fags don't have the intelligence to learn a new control scheme. Many times over the past few days I've heard a sqeak about pressing reload, and instead throwing a Power Drain item. Hilarious.

Hey, I am 20 and it took me a good hour to remember to press the right bumper button. Especially in a panic of Covenant

Although, an hour into the game, you are almost finished.

Meh, I wasn't going to bother getting it but my roommate did so I played the co-op campaign with him. Not a very good value (only 5 - 7 hours long). But I though it was a step up from Halo 2. It had some fun moments (taking down the huge scarab walkers was entertaining). I wouldn't rush out to buy it though. If you must play it, rent it for a weekend because its way short and doesn't really have much replay value other than online play (which personally I don't care about).

Calm down, I'm just yanking yer balls. This isn't a spoiler. It never happens.
