So who's getting Halo 3 tonight at midnight??

All I know is that ending may have been the single dumbest ending for a video game ever. After all of that fucking hype that this will end the series, it was a soap-opera cop-out ala Dallas...

Halo 4 will be released under the premise that everything that happened previously was only a dream and thus pointless....

And people will still eat it up like it's bakery fresh cinnamon buns.

Actually, I'm not as angsty about the ending anymore. After beating it on legendary, I let the credits roll and saw the additional ending, which mollified me a bit. Not sure if it's always there after the credits, or if it's only there if you beat it on legendary.

And Bungie would never do something as utterly retarded as the whole "it was all just a dream" soap-opera cop-out.

Also, there probably won't be a Halo 4. I'm pretty sure Bungie only intended it to be a trilogy, and they likely want to move on to something new.

Srsly? I can lay out the ending for ya if you want.

It's always possible, but I've followed Bungie since long, long before Microsoft bought them up. Bungie is still a separate studio within Microsoft, so I'm pretty sure they have the ability to tell Microsoft no, if MS is leaning on them. And plus, there must be some folks at Microsoft that must know that it's for the best to move on to new things. Bungie has a big enough name now that any new project will get enough attention anyways.

Yes, there'll be the movie (god, I'm not looking forward to that, unless its done by the same person who made those awesome live-action Halo commercials), and various other spin-off crap and memorabilia. Bungie itself will probably have little if anything to do with any of that though.

Yes, there's always the fan demand and the prospect of oodles of money to be made. But hell, if those two factors were enough to get a project rolling, we would've seen both a PS2 remake of FFVII, and a PS3 remake of it already. Developers do have minds and wishes of their own outside money-grubbing. Well, some do anyway.

Note to those who aren't quite able to connect the dots: Go compare the beginning of Marathon to the end of Halo 3. It makes a little more sense. And, Kyuu, the extended bit only happens on Legendary.

Good to know, thanks. (not sarcasm)

To be honest, I don't really see the connection. And I played the crap out of Marathon 1 & 2 (never got too far in Infinity, I have to admit). The only thing I can think of is that you might be saying that large sphere that I took to be a really overdeveloped planet was the colony ship Marathon, and that somehow the unstable portal took the Master Chief and Cortana to another dimension.

Of course, this begs the question: how did the Master Chief get onto a ship complete with an escape pod (since the cybernetic soldier from Marathon was heading to the colony ship in an actual ship named the Mirata, not the severed aft section of a vessel, and that ship was destroyed by the Phfor so he made the rest of the trip in an escape pod)? What the hell happened to Cortana, unless that was the Mirata's AI mentioned in the intro text in the manual, though of course that wouldn't make sense since Durandal seemed to be previously familiar with that ship, AI, and the cybernetic soldier himself. Why does the Mjolnir armor look entirely different? There'd just have to be a helluva lot of retconning going on to make that work, and I don't think Bungie was doing any such thing.

you've completely lost me there. just tell me what's sucky about the ending?

What the hell did happen to Master Chief anyway? It had him riding in the back of the human ship (can't remember the name of it), when the original Halo ring (which was being re-established) blew up over the "Arc".

Then it goes straight to some bull about marines dying, blah blah blah, and how the Master Chief wasn't here to see this, and to me it sounded like they were having a good ol' whinge about him dying or something. But then there was a "117" carved into the gravestone.

The nerds making Halo 3 really need to get themselves a decent story guy. It justs seems that they put in what nerds think is awesome, and crap on from there. But whatever. Most disappointing game ever.

On a sidenote, I'm really enjoying GRAW 2, it's great. Even though the treammate AI hasn't really improved, despite reviewer hype (marksman and medic are nice additions though). I'm at the final mission, and they cranked the difficulty up tenfold for just the last 5 minutes, it seems.

Sorry, went of on a tangent about the supposed connection between the Halo universe and the Marathon universe, and the ending connecting them, and yadda yadda yadda.

Anywho...

[MAJOR SPOILERS]

The basic story outline goes like this. A portal opens over this large thingermabob unearthed by the Covenant on Earth. Portal leads to installation called the Ark, which is outside the galaxy (therefore, out of range of the Halo-networks ability to genocide every living thing of sufficient biomass to support the Flood. The Flood, having commandeered space-faring technology, follow to the Ark. Master Chief and Arbiter kill the Prophet guy before he can activate the Halos. Chief finds Cortana, she's kept the Index (the thinger that allows one to fire a Halo ring) from the Halo from the first game the whole time, there's an unfinished Halo by the Ark. They go to fire it in order to wipe out the Flood at the Ark, which is the only Flood infestation left. Activate Halo, cue escape-from-Halo-before-it-blows scene, get back to human ship (called Dawn-of-somethingorother).

Here's where the actual ending starts. Ship is flying towards the portal, Halo activates, big blinding-white explosion, which seemingly overtakes them just as they reach the portal. Switch to Lord Hood (commander of the Earth forces) and marines standing at an improvised tomb to those who died in the conflict, Lord Hood making a speech. As he talks, you see the front section of the Dawn crash-land on Earth, marines get the Arbiter out of there, but Master Chief and Cortana are nowhere to be seen. Lord Hood alludes to not being able to believe "he" is gone, presumably referring to the Chief. Scratched on the tomb are the numbers 117, and I believe the Chief was Spartan-117. The obvious insinuation being that the Chief died. Or, if you like to get philosophical, perhaps it only refers to the fact that his legend as the invincible super-soldier died, since it's just his Spartan number on there, not his actual name or picture. Arbiter flies off on Covenant ship.

That's where it ends if you don't beat it on legendary, and why I was extremely dissatisfied originally. However, after legendary, if you let the credits roll, there's an additional scene. You see the Chief drifting in zero-gee through the severed aft section of the ship. He goes to a little pedestal where Cortana's holo-projection is displayed. They talk a little, Cortana remarks that the portal must've become unstable as they were passing through as the Halo-explosion presumably destroyed the Ark installation that was the source of the portal, that it'll probably be a long time before anyone finds them (since they didn't get ported back to Earth, like the front section of the Dawn did). I'm not sure if they're supposed to be just farther out in the solar system, or somewhere else entirely. There's always speculation that it's, in fact, a parallel dimension. Chief goes into cold-sleep, telling Cortana to wake him if she needs him. Cuts to view of the Dawn's aft-section drifting through space, presumably some time later, and you see it "falling" towards a large sphere that could be a very over-industrialized world or maybe just a large ship, who knows. The End.

Oh shit! We release the game tomorrow? We don't have an ending yet! Ah who gives a fuck, those little bastards will eat up whatever we give them. Lets just allude to Halo 4, they'll love that.

that looks to me like a pretty cheap "to be continued" thing for the legendary ending...

how can you say there's not going to be a next one?

Just like they said TR legend wasn't made for a sequel. Fucks... Anyway, it's a stupid ending. Even my sis could have made that up...

goddamn it... i think i'm going to hit the sack early today. this just isnt my day...

Well, Bungie left Microsoft and MS retained Halo IP. In other words there will be Halo 4 and 5 and 6 and on and on until it stops being such a money maker. They say that Bungie will continue to work on Halo but I bet that means Halo 3 D/C. I'm 99% sure that Bungie is done with Halo and someone else will make H4 because MS will want it sooner than Bungie will want to make it, if ever.

MINOR SPOILERS

So I finished the game and I did like it but I have to say that the story is a huge letdown. I don't think it was a bad story per se, it was pretty epic and dramatic, but for H3 it was shit. How could Bungie come up with a story like this as a conclusion to Halo trilogy? What a waste, especially because they really did an amazing job in terms of presentation. There were moments where the action, the music, and the environment fit together so well to create a dramatic feeling that it could have been out of this world, if only the plot was as good.

Overall, Halo series has a really great story. I love quality sci fi and Halo has its own sci fi feel that is really unique. If you pay attention, there is a lot going and it's all really interesting (well, if you like sci fi). H1 and H2 set H3's story up so well that it should have had really amazing emotional shit going on. Instead, H3 provided simple solutions to all the stuff that needed to be resolved in the series. I expected more of a Star Wars type intense story where MC has some important personal stuff going on, where we meet Forerunners (it's obvious who they are but I was hoping there would be more to them), where someone is someone's father or some shit. There was absolutely none of that but sooo much could have been.

H2 ended as Cortana was about to tell Gravemind everything. I was expecting a lot more to that, like did she betray people or does she know something mindblowing? All that really amounted to were those flashes of cortana that were absolutely fucking pointless. She was basically talking jibberish (I defied Gods and Demons?? Wtf is that? What does that even mean?). To make things emotional they just killed a bunch of characters, it's like a 13 year old was in charge or something.

One thing that I do like about it is they didn't go the Matrix 3 way and create a plot that cannot be interpreted with certainty, it's pretty clear what happened. Even the ending is pretty clear, I was expecting no ending, like many successful series have nowadays. (Btw, you do get the video after the credits in all modes, in Legendary it's a bit longer). To be completely honest, the story is not all that horrible, it does what needs to be done and leaves no questions unanswered as far as I'm concerned but it's a crime what they did with the material they had.

OOOoo, level 8 absolutely blew chunks! I loved the flood and loved Library of Halo: CE but H3 version of the flood intense levels made for the worst levels in the whole series. The very last sequence of the game is fucking intense though, I was literally on the edge of the seat. Fuck this, I like this game and the story too
