You seem to be assuming this guy is a hypocrite by association. You've heard suggestions from the social justice crowd of the first statement, thus are automatically assuming this is hypocrisy, because this guy is part of the social justice crowd and believes in the second statement. "Which is it SJWs, some of you on twitter said this, but another unrelated journalist said this"
Perhaps you should realise that "Social Justice" is not a monolith, and different people have different ideas, and considering this hypocrisy, when it's one journalist who you have no proof even agrees with the former statement, is ridiculous.
Perhaps judge people's ideas by their own merits, instead of automatically assuming he's a hypocrite, because he said something which contradicted your idea on what social justice types are like.

I think that what @Hassknecht means is that people are idiots and everyone will spin the "state" of modern "cinema" to their own agenda. Even when different and/or the same sides says the opposite thing depending on the same and/or different movies.
Basically, each critic/journo/internet writer says what they want it to mean than what it actually means (spoilers: it usually means that good movies are successful and bad movies flop).

It's got the illusion of depth to its universe but all it's really about is PEW PEW and MAGIC and the only interesting thing that ever really happens as a consequence is someone getting chopped in half or blown up

Personally, I enjoyed Star Wars before Disney took over. What you just said is something I'd agree with on the new movies. All it is in my opinion is a shell of the originals being used as a tool for Disney's Star Wars branch's liberal agenda
While I'm not so strict on the subject, I do mostly agree with Pariah here. Star Wars is the most overrated piece of fiction in 20th/21st century. Actually, given the actual size of Star Wars franchise and its ever-presence, it might be the most overrated thing in human culture.
Where I disagree is that the only good thing is Empire Strikes Back. While that's arguably the high-point of the series, the original trilogy are overall an unique experience. They give us a fairly simple story that doesn't have a lot of depth, but the way it is presented makes it a novel thing. And they are damn well made films - despite some flaws - and deserve the recognition they have. Shitton of flaws, sure, but when summed up Star Wars the original trilogy is an important milestone in film.
Problem is that outside of the original trilogy Star Wars is a bloated, rotten colossus that is sustaining itself on its own festering insides. There are some good things in the franchise still - some comics, books, video games etc. - but the flagship of the franchise (the films) and most of the "secondary material" are either poorly made expansions to this huge universe or just a bad attempt at recapturing the magic of the original films, which is and always will be a fruitless endeavor.
