Surfs miscellaneous art dump

Can I ask what font did you use in the "Welcome to Wisconsin" phrase? I've been looking for similar one for ages.

The "FUCK YOU NCR!" should be in a more organic, handwritten style. It's much too "perfect."

Interesting stuff overall.

I don't have much experience with photography, but would you mind telling me what you used/how you made these?

Some renders 'n shit:

Back then when I created those initial pictures, I basically put (i only had this one) another picture with with lots of scratches and ruined edges above the initial photography (scanned in) as a mask - and its noticeable as Wooz earlier mentionend. I didn't know back then that it is very easy to reach similar stuff with just Gimp/Photoshop (any Photoediting software which supports multiple layers) and a couple of "grunge" brushes. I bet Wooz can tell you more about it, if you're more interested and I can help you can send me a PM as well.

And a new render, this time a bit more "wastelandish"- a bit inspired by the looks of "The Road". Still learning my grasps with 3d rendering etc. :)

Looks cool.

No, no. Looks awesome.

I really like these photos. I dunno, they make me think of some horror movie or something. This post-apocalypticness is pretty good. I like it. You know, Chernobyl, STALKER, shit like that.

The wing thingies look snazzy and all, but they're a bit cluttery... I don't really see where you were going with this design from a functionality point of view, as the main stuff such as hp and ap are a tad small compared to the decorative elements. And that floating thing there is kind of awkward too IMO.

Why don't you try some variations on the design? It'd be cool if it combined its nice retro-look and more functionality-derived form.

Yep you are right, I was merely doing it from a "hey that looks cool" view - not really with functionality in mind. Unfortunately space on 800x600 is limited and I've no idea where I could attach the messagebox to (the floating thing ;) ).

The HP and AC need to be bigger too, yes. That red fluid-thingy in the middle changes depending how many AP you have left (simply colorcoded)

Thanks for your feedback Wooz! :)

No problem! If I have any advice, it's to sketch out the approximate size and placement of every element before going into the detail/decoration, makes all design work easier on the long run ;)

I tried to follow your advices and kept working on it. Obviously still not finished and far from perfect, but I simply have fun working on such things and graphics in general, so it's not bad when in the end it won't be used.

Here is a 1024x768 shot:

Anyone has an idea where I could place the AP bar? ;)

A friend of mine is writing a blog/some short stories about a dystopian future setting he created and asked me if I want to make some artwork for him. Why not I said, and first made some 3d renders of a cityscape, I then touched in Photoshop. Nothing fancy, but I like it.

Made another bit more detailed one in the same city. I actually wanted to add more detail, but I am running out of ideas. :(

Running out of ideas? Try looking at pictures of cityscapes for inspiration? Figure out what buildings are built where and why, and the different functions of elements you see in the photographs, such as big vents designed to keep air running on skyscrapers, power lines, antennae, lifts maybe?

Avoid burnt-out places if you want to focus on the buildings, less so if you want to give a general feel or impression.

I'd suggest you also check out environments on cghub.com and goodbrush.com. The first is a portal with a ton of amazing artists, the other is the homepage of Craig Mullins, an amazing painter/concept artist/illustrator with a lot of experience. There's a million ways to paint a city...

Thanks for the suggestion to look on cghub, lots of good inspiration there! Though, it's a bit demotivating to see so many talented people when I myself just crawl around and do puny little things. :D

Anyway, I made some "machine room" render.

While trying out new rendering techniques (and fighting my boredom) I came up with this joke-game cover/shot. Enjoy. ;)
