Survival Horror Thread! (Also for any other type of horror games)

Ok yes they have good well told story's. But it isn't Shakespeare.
I appreciate competently written/compelling stories in video games more than I do anywhere else tbh. My belief is, the video game industry is lacking when it comes to storytelling. There are far too many hacks in the video game industry. I can't remember the last time I played a game whose story I would call great. Silent hill 2 is the most recent one that comes to mind. that was... 2002? 2001? A long fucking time ago, regardless. A game whose story I could call great... that's a much bigger deal, at least to me, than some new "innovative" gameplay that will likely just be seen as a gimmick in retrospect.

I actually like the original Alone in the Dark more than the original Resident Evil.
Now we gonna have to fight.:slap:

RE7 is insanely good. Horror fans need to play it now!
just saw the trailer on TV a couple seconds ago, showcasing a shotgun... that presents a concern for me, I'm so tired of shooty shooty RE games. we've had three. one was good. and even assuming the focus isn't the shooting... there's the possibility of there being an overabundance of ammunition... I'm... wary.

I'm not liking what I see. Here is someone else's thoughts on the subject:

Well I mean, he isn't wrong about the cinematic aspect of the game. I'm about halfway through and it's been very linear with predictable jump scares and kind of lame enemies, to be honest. I think the game has more in common with recent shit like Outlast than Resident Evil.

I'm liking the atmosphere and the attention to detail in the graphics, but there's really not much else here. I'm a fan of the style of earlier RE games (non-linearity, huge maps and tension through limited resources) and although you do get some sense of the latter in RE7, the game is so scripted that it ends up feeling very restrictive. I feel like they could have done so much more with the first person perspective in terms of interactivity. So far the boss battles have been disappointing too...

In the end, I think that despite everyone jizzing their pants over this game like it's the second coming, in 5 years it will probably be ranked way low in the series (it's certainly not nearly in the same vicinity of the very best like REmake or RE4 if you like the newer style of RE).

I have a sneaking suspicion that VR was a more fundamental design tenet than PR would have you know. It's just not a very engaging game after you figure out half of the tricks (takes a couple of hours), so what's left is a pretty but shallow walking simulator with some jump scares that work a lot better in VR.

Or, the second half of the game could be a lot better and I'll eat my words, but I doubt it.

I honestly don't get the "its not RE" sentiment. Yes it borrows from a few modern horror games like isolation or outlast but we are playing the same game right? The mansion, puzzles, key cards, monster encounters and etc are all there. This is closer to RE1 than 4 was.

Its like saying fallout 3 isnt a fallout game (fallout 4 I would be more inclined to agree wasnt one) it has basically all the staples there. Granted RE7 was a far better successor to the originals.

But Fallout 3 isn't a Fallout game. :smug:

I won't judge it until I play it, but it doesn't have the non-linear nature of the old games, or enemy variety, or memorable music, so right from the start it doesn't feel the same even without the view change. I'm not a fan.

.... what are you talking about... between the puzzles and locked doors the original RE games were extremely linear. they didn't exactly feel linear but they most certainly were.

Resident Evil 7 seems to be one scripted sequence after another with little to no exploration since you are stuck in a small cabin for most of the game. It may not be non-linear in the sense that you can go wherever you want right from the start, but there are multiple ways in the first few games for you to go in the beginning. I could explain better but I'm sure you can see the difference. It's meant to be different obviously with more comparisons to Outlast than Alone in the Dark.

I'm sure you can see the difference
your faith in my intelligence is not unfounded. I can see the differemce but the original RE games were objectively linear. but fuck that is RE7 really just one scripted sequence after another? no exploration? no enemy variety? this is starting to sound terrible.

You have the cabin folks chasing you and some molded bugs/blobs and that is it.

hrmmm... how's the story? is it the first RE game with a good story or...

The story is more personal this time with the missing wife and loving husband trope in effect. It still has a campy feel to it which is good. It just feels like it belongs in another game.
You have elite tactical agents in most of the games and some jackass who gets his hand cut off and stapled back on in this one.

The stories are good in a B-movie sense. They are fine for the genre. They got bad when you Code Veronica came round.

RER2 I didn't play because episodic games are bullshit.

why do you say that? I never got all that far into that one. its certainly more of an RE3 in terms of story (especially as a sequel to claire's story) than NEMESIS was. also may I just say that it's been awhile sense we've had a good villain/monster in a video game that even came close to the NEMESIS project? not even pyramid head is as good imo (though he is in, like, my top 5 favorite monsters for the symbolism alone. also the mannequin incident). but I don't think a monster has given me that same sort of primal (OH FUCK) type of fear as NEMESIS did. maybe the alien in alien isolation would if the flamethrower didn't make him your bitch and it was easier to get away. (if he sees you its basically a death sentence)

boy that post ended in a different place than it started.

I liked RE3 better than CV, but then again I loved Raccoon City. I had to play CV on a Dreamcast that my friend got at the time, so it was an interesting experience. CV made the series into the action series it later became with RE4. RE Survivor was awful btw. Just...
