Talking Sporeplant, Yay or Nay?

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
So just the other day in a replay of Fallout 2, and arrived at Broken Hills. I came across the Spore Plant quest that I previously loathed, playing it, I figured: Is it really as bad as I had thought it was?

I know it's considered part of everything that's silly about Fallout 2, but honestly is it really that bad?

I mean, It's fully explained, and Fallout doesn't go on real world logic so I can definitely see it as possible.

Do you think the Talking Sporeplant part is that bad?, I mean it's not entirely immersion breaking, sure it's a bit silly, but it doesn't feel out of place in the world of Fallout IMO.

It's not something I really like. However in the grand scheme of things it doesn't spit in the face of lore or cause big story issues, so I can let it slide. I can just take it as a Wild Wasteland Perk kind of thing.

Every installment in the series has its own take on how seriously it takes itself. Each development team has their own vision as to what the world should be like.

The sporeplant would be completely out of place in Fallout Classic or New Vegas, but fits pretty snug into the tone of Fallout 2's setting.

Its as bad as the firebreathing ants in fo3. Same thing really. A scientist with no funds or resources in a random place managed to generically engineer a creature to do some ridiculous shit.

TBH I never found the fire ants that bad.

IIRC he doesn't even do it intentionally, he was trying to find a way to get them back to Pre-War size. Can't remember how exactly he managed it though.

Talking sporeplant is really dumb and silly, and no ammount of explanation will do - but - eh - I'm not really opposed to it. It gives me plenty of XP just to run back and forth a lot :0

Didn't he use FEV? For the fire-ants that is.
Nah, he genetically altered their DNA code to bring them back to pre-war size. No FEV was involved.

As for the spore-plant... It's a nice reference to Little Shop of Horrors. Since it's ultimately insignificant to the story, I'll let it pass.

I have no problem with the Sporeplant. It doesn't really break Fallout lore in any way, and if we can have really intelligent computers, intelligent deathclaws, ghouls that are irradiated mutant humans that live for centuries while their bodies are almost falling apart, a mutant with a tree growing on it's head, a cyberbiological blob entity with psyker powers that absorbs humans and can connect to and assimilate a computer, etc. We can have a unique talking Sporeplant that actually has an explanation on how it came to existence.

It wasn't quite as bad an idea as talking deathclaws (which was quite possibly the worst idea in yhe whole game) or the prolonging of the Keeng Ra'at thing with another one under Gecko, but the game might've still been better off without it.

Singular isolated and rare freaks of nature (like Keeng under Klamath) serve the nature if the setting relatively well, but too much is always too much. Cain'n co. understood this with leaving the S'Lanter out of the game; Avellone'n co. didn't quite as well (fucking talking deathclaws).

It didn't bother me per say, but I don't think it was the best decision. A fair bit of the content doesn't seem to add much to the story or your sense of the setting, which altogether weakens immersion / atmosphere. I mean, as much as I love the idea of hyper intelligent raccoons it was probably the right call to exclude them in Fo. It's not that the ideas in Fo2 were bad or poorly implemented, they just didn't fit as snugly as they should. A more focused concept would have been better. I felt less like a post apocalyptic rogue, and more like...I don't even know honestly. That's kind of the problem I think. Best I can come up with is a wacky adventurer against a grimdark backdrop. Made it more difficult to get emotionally invested in the different town's struggles. They didn't feel as interesting to me too, so that didn't help.

To be honest, BH is one of my favorites towns in F2. I like everything there, even the plant and the scorpion that can lockipick and play chess.

I never really found any fault with the plant, I rather enjoyed the quest line as it broke up some of the more serious quests in that part of the game. From my perspective I think it was a good idea to include the silly talking plant, just to reduce some of the stress of the player. Broken Hills has a bunch of crazy things going on, from the guy sleeping in the gave, to the "treasure hunter". I feel its within reason that other zany junk is going on there as well.

Really when it comes down to it, all you really want to do is beat that damned scorpion, we all know it cheats because when you kill it, it has a pair of pliers in its inventory. (I think I remember it does at least?)
