The Cathedral *spoilers*

First time out of the vault
I've just come across The Cathedral, and I've spoken to everyone important and found out about the basement. So I stole the item from the guy upstairs (not sure if that item helped me unlock the door to downstairs or not, but I managed to pick the lock anyway), and now I've gone downstairs. I managed to kill the master's creature in the tunnels, and the two nightkin (just about), but there's no way I'll be able to kill everyone inside the vault.

So I had a look on the Wiki and it was only then that I made the connection and realized that my main quest is to kill The Master, who it seems will be in the vault. But I don't think I'm powerful enough (I'm maybe level 7), even though I have a combat shotgun, desert eagle, and plasma rifle.

Would I best going off to other random locations on the map and doing other things to level up? Or should I find a companion and come back and try to kill them all (which would probably involve multiple reloads)?

Considering killing the master is one of the main reason for which you gain XP in the first place, I would say go gather all the quests you can, and maximize your character. By doing all quests, you'll probably level to around 10-15, depending how much you push for, with random encounters and such.

Don't worry about companions, you can exterminate the Cathedral all on your own, you just have to be awesome enough!

Yeah looks like the game wants you to have companions, and I would prefer not to, although it does make combat a little more interesting. I'll try exploring the map for more quests and then come back.

I never take companions to the "final chapters" - don't want them to die, and don't want to babysit them.

Anyway. Unless you've put all your points in stealth, science and (probably) repair, going to the Master at lvl 7 is not a that good idea. There should still be more than enough content in the game to get you level up a bit further, though... which is what I'd suggest you do.

The game didn't actually have companions planned, but when they tried out the idea, it tested exceedingly well with their in-house players, so they added them in as optional.

You can kill the Master at level 7

You need to wear a purple robe to pose as a children of the Cathedral and avoid being attacked by the Super-mutant, they you can access a nuclear bomb that will blow up the base, killing the Master in the process (you don't need to actually meet him).

Although, i wouldn't advise doing this. You would miss one of the best character in the game and that mission is the last of the game. As you can't continue after that, i suggest you to do everything you can in the wasteland outside the Cathedral/Mariposa, and then, meet the bosses at the very last moment of your playthrough.

So if I kill everyone in and below the Cathedral then the game ends? Because I've been working my way through the levels (it seems that I was a bit higher levelled than I thought so I'm getting there), but if clearing them out means the game ends then I better go all the way back up and out so I can explore some more first.

The game ends after you blown up the Cathedral (or kill the Master, which trigger it anyway) or the Mariposa Military Base (which contains the vats).
So if you want to see as much of the game as possible, you should do those two things at the very last.

Whatever you have to accomplish, the original Fallout games gave you 3 options by design; stealth, talking, and combat. With a good enough speech skill, I think you can confront the Master, and deal with him/her/it/them face to face without firing a shot. Failing everything else, you always have the option to charge in face first guns blazing and getting your friends shot in the arse.

Of course you can, but you need the right skills for that.

I don't know if i was lvl 7, but it is kind of what i did on first playthrough and i had a pretty low level and hadn't much character's or even player's skills. (beside having already played Fo2 a few times)

Ended up at Mariposa through Harry in Necropolis, then abused the fact that you can leave the dialog while The Lieutenant tries to punch you, then managed to self-destruct the base while The Lieutenant was still slowly walking toward me. Then i left the base running with or without killing Lou. Then i ended up in the bomb room with the purple robe unaware that it would trigger the game's end. I didn't meet the real Master, didn't join the BOS and i am not even sure i found the water chip, considering Harry sent me to Lou. If that so, i didn't have the mission from the overseer to destroy the Master & the Vats. I am not sure about the water chip, but i am 100% sure about not joining the BOS and not meeting the Master on first playthrough.

Are you sure of that? (It's been a while, but I'd still swear that you have to eliminate both the master and the base for it to end; or am I recalling this wrong?)

Indeed, i meant "and", not "or". You have to destroy both HQ. Sorry for the mistake.

OK game completed. I blew up both places. Got positive endings across the board too. Sad to be banished by the overseer at the end though! But I'll be back in Fallout 2!

I loved the random encounter I had with the TARDIS by the way, that was hilarious! I'm guessing I probably missed quite a few entertaining random encounters.

Does anyone know where I can find Vic's radio? I can't find it anywhere in his house.

I was about to suggest, look for it in his house.
It's more a walkie-talkie kind of thing, than a music-playing radio, if you get me. I'm not sure where it is, you might even find it in Klamath vendor inventories, it's a random junk item, it doesn't have to be *the* correct radio, any one will do.
Also, you don't strrrictly need it. *Ka-chik.*

OK I'll check the vendors.

I'm not enjoying F2 as much as F1 so far. So far I've been to Kallath and the Den, and I've rescued Smitty (that was tough), but I've got no medkits so I have to keep going to safe areas and resting until healed, and I keep running out of ammo, and having to resort to melee weapons which I'm no good with. And I don't have enough money to buy a decent weapon like a shotgun and shells.

So I'm not sure whether to just keep gambling in the casino, reloading when I lose, in order to raise enough money for a gun (not exactly in the spirit of the game), or whether to go off to a new place in the hope of finding money, ammo, guns etc.

Does anyone have an idea why after idestroyed the master Brotherhood of Steel turned hostile to me?
