The Day the Earth Stood Still

I'd like to see a movie about aliens who try to destroy the earth because they're jealous that humans are so good-looking, far-sighted, and able to keep their planet incredibly clean compared to other races.

Badass.

My two favorite books about aliens (it's a tie) are "Roadside Picnic" and "The Genocides." Both have very little about the aliens themselves- in the former, they've come and gone in an instant (it's backstory in the book) and in the latter, there are some brief "reports" but that's it- and they're more about human society changing or falling to pieces in the face of indifferent invasions. Or even just apparent invasions.

So, yea, "indifferent aliens coming to earth" has been done before. I like it, personally, but it's definitely time to do something different.

[spoiler:7a31e37c06]3/ When there is an alien attack or something, I expect to see a bunch of scientists in a bunker trying to fix the world. The army and the goverment are acting very, very stupid on most ocasions:
"We'd leave this alien alone with you because he's probably drugged."
"Sure its a giant alien robot, but we'd be safe behind these 2 inches of glass."[/spoiler:7a31e37c06]

[spoiler:7a31e37c06]That whole "the American president is evil and doesn't care about anybody" theme was pretty lame, though. If you can't create any conflict without resorting to cliche, just don't make a movie.[/spoiler:7a31e37c06]

The movie is hilarious, though, just because of how terribad Keanu's acting is. Well, the movie was pretty bad, honestly.

i liked the movie. it wasnt supposed to be epic, and it seems like thats what its being judged on.

unfortunately the rest will have to be enclosed in spoiler tags

i did not like how they portrayed the steps the us president would do. keep shooting bigger/smarter weapons and hoping they do something... just stupid. if the first few dont work, the rest wouldnt either.

we should have been able to see keanu go into the sphere rather than assuming he "died" as they portrayed. also, why in the world would they make it seem like he has no contact with the sphere at a distance. the dude can see the lasers for targeting systems, but cannot communicate over a short distance with the sphere? something aint right.

overall i think the movie was quite good, and quite accurate as to what would happen other than the above.

to be serious, if you believe in aliens then you have to accept that the aliens have 1 of 3 possibilities.

1) they are the same technological or worse than we are advanced, we would never run into them.

2) they are more advanced than us, studying us, but have a policy of non-intervention in which they will do nothing to help/hinder us from doing anything we want.

3) they are more advanced than us, studying us, and have a policy of intervention to preserve either the planet or the biologicals on the planet. question would be, would they value say a species of bird going extinct moreso than we would.

oh and fireborn, leaving the polygraphist in the room with keanu ( not a spoiler, it was in adverts ) without guards is entirely plausable. there are many "guard" type positions where they have access passes to a door, but are forbidden from entering a door. but they should have had someone else in the room, i agree. but not having a guard inside the room does make sense.

I'm just bored to tears by sci-fi that has some preachy moral about how stupid/wasteful/wicked humans are. That's been done soooo many times already.

Give me old, intelligent sci-fi like Planet of the Apes that created compelling philosophical situations, or Arthur C. Clarke's novels that created interesting projections about the future based on technological progress. Where's that stuff gone?

Things you need to know about the new TDTESS...

The famous "Klaatu, Barada, Nicto" failsafe line isn't in the movie.

The speech that makes Ted, I mean Keanua Reeves, give up and leave is about on par with the speech that makes President Eden commit suicide in FO3.

Awesome use of spoiler tags.

Well, for starters, there is no technological progress anymore. It's now known as "raping Gaia".

Just because a bunch of people want to live like damn tree hippies it doesn't mean the rest us want too.

I can't help but notice no one has commented on this movie.

It's because it's one of those movies that you don't really need to watch if you've seen the trailer already.

I am kinda surprised this image has not poped up in here yet
