The Death of a Monitor

Colt

Vault Dweller
Update: It appears the verdammt Alaskan weather is conspiring against my destroying the monitor. It's been pretty overcast lately and now it's foggy right now with light snow fall. :x

So... My monitor has been screwing up for some reason for the past month. Frequently it will warp in at the edges and I will have to hit it on the side to make it stop, nothing else fixes it. Degaussing and turning it on and off, cooling, nothing. No reason or clue why really. My brother thinks it might be a loose solder joint which we can't really find and repair with the tools we have at our disposal currently. It's a Phillips 107S 17" monitor. It displays perfectly even when warping in. If any of you have any idea what the hell is causing this, I'd be more appreciative.

If no one knows how to fix it... It's meeting its end tomorrow between my 30" (76.2 cm) steel crowbar and I. I'm just really damn tired of dealing with its crap and it was only $5 at a secondhand shop almost a year ago and has worked perfectly since so no huge loss. I'm using a spare 19" professional flatscreen monitor of my brother's right now. It's huge but doesn't warp so I'm happy.

Here are some pictures of it and the its executor:

I'll be sure to take more pictures of the execution tomorrow, if it happens. - Colt

The monitor is simply worn out with age. Same thing happend to my old one on my old desktop. Just like yours, only smacking it made it work. (EDIT: The ironiy is the monitor outlasted the desktop, which died of a HD that couldnt read anymore.)

The only thing you could do is resize (manualy) the amount of the screen that displays a picture, so you have several inches of black on each edge of the picture. However, even that would only delay the inevetable.

Smash away.

I envy you

why is that?

because he'll be breathing in harmful gasses and coming in contact with dangerous heavy metals while he's destroying his CRT?

anyhow, i hope you'll enjoy it Colt...

From what I've read of CRTs, they really don't put toxic materials in them anymore because, well, they're toxic. I assure you, I won't be cracking this thing open and stepping up to draw in great lungfuls of air. I'm more worried about the implosion factor and that's why I'll be wearing gloves and all in case any little bits do decide to fly. I also plan on ripping the back cover off and then shoving it into the snow so that any residual charge should short out. Thanks for the warning though, SuAside. - Colt

Haha. Wrong, really. The last research I did on this was half a year back. They still put flame deterrents into the monitors, albeit that they are less harmful than the Bromide ones of the past. However, your monitor looks old, so I can safely assume that it has bromide fire deterrents, which are bad for your health. (They won't kill you, of course, not in those amounts).

Ratty...you just want him to give it to you so you can have two monitors to watch pRon on...

So Gordon Freeman...er, Colt...just remember to play dramatic battle music while you smash it. That will make the event even more grandiose.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Ratty, if I had an M60, I'd be invading your country right now.

I'll be sure to be safe about it, Sander, thanks.

I'll probably be playing Iron Maiden or some such music while doing it but unfortunately today is a horrible day to carry it out. It's overcast and gloomy and it's very wet outside from warm temperatures. Perhaps tomorrow. - Colt

Is it possible, when an old monitor fucks up in this manner, to repair it yourself?

Because I have one that's blurry and I'm sure it would only take a minor calibration adjustment to fix it.

It's just that monitors are so useful, it seems like too big a waste vs the fun you get from smashing it.

Smashing a Compaq on the other hand.....

It's true what they say, then? Give a man a semi-automatic and he can keep his house safe from criminals, but give him an M60 and he can go and get himself Croatia instead.

I'd like to see him and his M60 go up against our... our... our malfunctioning MIG-21s!

Yeah, scrawny video game nerds are known for their resistance to chemicals and various illnesses.
