The Institute's Plan

So, the Institute's grand plan to save humanity is to have a sustainable eco-system underground with nuclear power for centuries to come?

I.e. "Build More Vaults."

That's not actually a terrible plan.

But why wouldn't they just SAY that?

BAD WRITING.

Because Bethesda relies on players imagination to fill up the holes. They don't even think of most stuff people come up with to justify stuff in their games. They just get a few people sitting around a table and ask for suggestions. Then they implement some of those suggestions and usually don't care about consistency.

Isn't their entire endgame to replace humanity with synths and lord over them? Hard to tell considering how over the place they are in leadership. I get that Beth wanted to emulate the whole New Vegas thing where they have good writing but it doesn't translate well to the softcore Enclave clone in Fo4.

I wasted my evening tonight watching a two hour video on why Rebecca Sugar sucks. Honestly, she would be a good Bethesda writer for Fallout because of her mannerisms in storytelling.

Anyway, the real purpose of the Institute was... I dunno. In most of the earlier games, you saw obvious villains and you were able to figure out their motivations early on (Fallout 2 did this really well with not just the introduction video, but also the first time you run into Horrigan where he brutally murders a family of farmers and then brushes you off as you are still a nobody in the Wasteland). Even Caesar's Legion actually pulled this off (very clumsily, but...) because "slavers!"

What did the Institute do? Replace people with robots... have robots wander around, shooting anything... and are basically eggheads who sit around and rant about how the dirt sniffers on the surface need to be eliminated due to impurities (Which, ironically, was also the Enclave's mission in 2 and 3).

If you side with the Institute, you basically would tell the Commonwealth to fear the eggheads and their robots, while it's more interesting to leave the C.I.T. as a smoldering wreckage.

Nah.
The Institute is basically a 'faceless organization'. There is leadership. but not tied to individuals.
The ruling body is called the Directory. and I don't think Shaun is their actual leader, only acting as a Face to the Faceless. (and Synth is not his brainchild either, yet he later lead the project.... The second thawing was later revealed to be his doing, he might be aware that Synth project did make the Institute 'public enemy' to the Waste. he might consider conclude the project and stop making a new one, yet it appears that he's not as powerful as anyone think. ... or maybe there are voters who still alive 'controlling' him from behind. And by the time he thawed Cryocell containing 'backup' (How did he aware that PC is his parent? he had been nabbed before he can even remember anything!!!!) he's 'terminally ill'... The Institute didn't find a cure to his diseases and yes Shaun saw that the next director must be outsider so to force a change inside, but not a generic 'wastelander' either.

Shaun will recognize that Player is his parent. and will hand over The Institute to Player's rule.
That's a big cliffhanger. quite similar to Independent Ending in Fallout New Vegas.

Mama Murphy will give a foretunetelling that 'Player may not be loved. But he/she will save humanity'. The Institute is not quite redeemable but can be redeemed still.

Betty's style of Ending Narrtive is not what impressive. compared to The Old Gang's one where epilogues also includes the fate of individuals, places, technology, etc... the longest (and the best) was New Vegas epilogue.

Sadly, siding with the Institute does not enable you to actually make the Institute better. You can't even defend yourself from your companions who hate you for siding with them. "Hey, the Institute did some weird shit, but now I'm their director and I can now steer them in the right direction. You know, stop the abductions and replacements and slowly work with the surface world to make everything better", but no, all you can do is decide if you want to build more synths or if you want to give them better armor.

^ And so this refrects why Dave (As a player) align himself with the Railroad and destory The Institute.
So you can say that the Institute is beyond redemption?

You can with Valentine.

"Why side with the Institute!?"

"Do you want the Brotherhood winning!?"

"Err...no..."

That's a mystery I'll try to solve whenever I get to play Fallout 4. Everyone I ask seem to give some super vague answers or just a straight up "I dunno, but they're cool af, aren't they?"

I get the impression Shaun is responsible for 90% of the problems of the Institute and Kellog the remaining 10% of the problems.

Shaun is an enormous bigot against surface dwellers.

Kellog just doesn't give two fucks about collateral damage.

Can you tell him "Yeah, I'm putting a stop to that and I'll guide the Institute towards a positive future for the wasteland"? Can you do that?
Telling Valentine that the Institute might be better for him than the BoS is really not what I meant at all.

No, but Piper says you'll do it in her article published a couple of days after.

Make artificial humans to mop the floors, spend a looooot of time and resources trying to make them sentient just so you can be a dick and deny their sentience, make a big statement over the radio... about how you are just gonne go back underground and play with your toys at the end, create a new Strand of FEV... cuz why not, create artificial animals... but only gorillas, no normal cows, chickens or anything, replace random nobodies with Synths so that they.... do nothing, create technology that stops aging and makes you immortal.. only give it to one merc, create technology to back up your own brain into a Synth... let yourself die of cancer, after denying the sapience of synths create a child version of yourself and give it to your parent as a replacemwnt. The perfect plan, the Think Tank would be proud.

Giving synths free will but then try to deny them of free will after is just a fine example of the level the Bethesda writing is at.

Scientist (Shaun): Here is my project, The New Generation of Synths, artificial humans with cybernetic parts. Their genetic make up is based on a unradiated human from befoe the war.... ME! In a way, they are my children too.

Director:Oh, so they are fully sentient then?

Scientist: NOOOOOOOOOO! THEY ARE NOT! THAT'S SILLY!

Director: Ok... no need to get so worked up.

S: NOW I AM WORKED UP CUZ YOU ARE A RETARD! They are machines with no will of their own!

D: What are we gonna use them for?

S: Well, Mop floors, guard armories and shit.

D: We already have regular robots that can do that.

S: SHUT UP YOU PHILISTINE! THESE ARE ARTIFICIAL HUMANS! One day I will become Director of the Institute.....

D: And turn yourself into one of this fully organic Synths to become asuper human director? Interesting.

S: NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Synths are below us, I would never turn into one.

D:Why are you working on this project again?

Shaun really hates cyborgs because Kellog murdered his mommy.

Mind you, there's a very good use for synths that require them to be humanlike.

Oh and to infiltrate the Commonwealth.

Right.

Wouldn't it be easier to infiltrate the commonwealth through regular Mr Handies, hacked to send whatever they see directly to the Institute?
