The New Obsidian: Josh Sawyer appointed to studio Design Director role

Yeah, there are a number of people who could have been perfect for the role. JE Sawyer is a good choice through, I look forward to seeing what they bring out next.

I still have no idea what any of those names mean, designer this, director this, officer this... Everyone seems to be some kind of a designer in gaming studios.

Come on Josh, go annoy the fuck out of Todd so he lets you make a Fallout spinoff.

Like an annoying kid in a back seat:

"Can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!, can I make it yet?!"

Eventually he will either give in or have you killed. I think it's worth the risk.

Seems like Sawyer is going to keep doing what Obsidian does, and I'm good with that.

AFAIK Josh was responsible for character classes and RTwP combat system in Pillars of Eternity. RPGCodex was not amused by its outcome. You can find some of their gripes summed up in this review, although corresponding 100+ pages long thread full of memes was much more funny: http://www.rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=9867

I can't imagine what it must be like to be part of a community with such a bleak outlook and bad reputation around the internet. I'm glad I only deal with the sunshine of this site.

Reading through the codex thread makes it seem as if an evil overlord took over Obsidian or something.

I'm glad that he got the job and I'm confident that Obsidian will keep on delivering good RPGs.

Sawyer is not liked over there for some stupid reason. With people like Todd Howard around you take what you can get regardless of the minutiae of their RPG game design credo.

they're PnP RPG lover, dont think videogames will be good representative of that

Wow, he must have some chip on his shoulder. He compares the game to BG 1, but scrutinizes all aspects of the game to a degree, that not even Fallout could withstand. This game is head and shoulders above BG 1, he should give me some of the stuff he is smoking.

"Combine everything above, and you soon end up plowing through the game using the good, old ‘select all -> left click’ method, not giving a damn about anything. Just about the only part of the game where you can’t really do that is act 1, and that’s only if you go with Obsidian’s companions (because they have shit stats), instead of a custom-made party that can only have some problems in Raedric’s Hold. After you leave act 1 and get roughly to level 6 or so, the difficulty becomes a joke, no matter where you go or what you do. And even if you still haven’t arrived at the stage where you can just autopilot everything, you nevertheless keep doing the same stuff over and over again without ever shifting your tactics or approach in the slightest because no enemies ever have any immunities or quirks (case in point: use a spell to spill oil under a shadow to knock it down)."

This man is either a very skilled player, or i am just terrible, because i was getting my ass kicked half of the time on hard level. Hard + Trial of Iron i don't even know how that's doable and i'm not even talking about Path of the Damned...

Cean Gŵla, Shadow, Pŵgra, Vithrack‎ were all hard encounters to me that needed different approaches, not to mention the boss fights. IW2 was actually easier for me, as i was able to march to the ending zone with only 2 chars (granted on normal) and was destroying everything towards the end.

@Spacemunkey: I'm really enjoying RPGCodex, seems to me that most of them are just trolling or being overly sarcastic for fun all the time. The good thing is that you are the only person responsible for your own opinions there, none of board staff members would stomp on your balls for politically incorrect post or whatnot.

@AskWazzup: Haven't played PoE yet, the only thing designed by Josh I know is Icewind Dale 2.

Ironically, that's what a lot of people think about this website; we're all just links in a chain, maaaan.

I dunno, I kind of agree with him on most points about the gameplay; I haven't played it on the hardest difficulties, but on normal the AI is pretty unintelligent, most classes are lackluster and a lot of stats only have minor impacts on the game.

It's also true that a lot of the checks in conversation usually mean zilch, but it does add flavour to the game and at least if you make a choice in PoE, it matters.

Either way, I loved the game for its narrative and the characters I've come up with as a result. I really like the background-building aspect, it helps you immerse yourself in the world.
