The NMA Top 100 RPG's Discussion

I dont recall a single good or memorable quest in Skyrim, whileas even though Oblivion was a big steaming pile of turds, it had the Dark Brotherhood Questline which was decent. In Skyrim, all quests or dialogues are so random and interchangeable, you wouldnt even notice if someone would swap quest descriptions from one to the other, it was an incredible yawnfest.

If you're serious about finding 100 RPGs you would probably need Divine Divinity and Albion to flesh it out. I can't see how even an unordered list could be anything but arbitrary, though. You find you need to slot one game in, how do you determine which to throw out?

Tagaziel and I have been discussing that. He suggested a sub-board to work things out where we discuss and vote on each individual game. Here it is:

I'm proposing the following format:
<name>, <year>
<developer>
<where>

<screenshot>

<description>

Why is it a classic?

<500>

What can annoy?

<500>

Aiming 1500 chars per entry, explaining why it should be played. A separate forum board will be set up for submissions, votes and editor comments.

Thoughts?

What's the <where> field supposed to be? Where the game was developed? What the game's setting is? The rest of it seems like a reasonable format, but that one field just looked out of place, to me. And since the current list is divided into genres, is there any particular reason this format ignores genre specification?

I figured "where" might be the region it was developed in. Genre could be listed in the description, or simply add it into the template, either way it will be very thorough so nothing will be left out.

I forgot to expand on it. "Where" field is for links to places the game can be bought, eg. GOG.com, Steam, online retailers etc. The list has to be informative as well as useful.

As for the genre, I believe we should first accept entries, then divide them by genre, rather than impose a classification beforehand.

EDIT: 100 RPGs per Hour

Putting Oblivion on the list but denying Skyrim seems... wrong to me.

I don't know man... the questing in skyrim is terrible.

Still higher quality than Oblivion quests.

The Quests in Oblivion are less repetitive. They seem to put more emphasis on story. Just compare the Dark Brotherhood quest lines.

Well, the Dark Brotherhood quests are the best in Oblivion and the rest is mostly shit.

Questions:

1) Will there be a thread for submissions, or will each submission have a separate thread?
2) What's the final word on including/not including JRPGs, MMOs and "fringe-genre" games (e.g. Borderlands, FONV, Deus Ex, Diablo etc.)?

Each submission is its own, separate thread. I'll make a master one linking to all of them later, once they start showing up.

Further, if you can explain why the game is an RPG, then make a submission. FONV and Deus Ex are no brainer RPGs. Diablo is an action-RPG and can be added, I believe, as it's an example of a good class-based character system, even if it's not branching.

We're not RPnazis here. A list limited to only pre-2000 RPGs would be silly, as we're picking the best of the best, not the golden oldies.

I think it needs someone to do the first step. :>

I'll give it a shot when I come back home from work, just so that the collective NMA master-brain can bash the games I love :lol: I'll make sure to pick something obscure-ish.

I hope to add my submission for Earthbound soon, if these thunderstorms don't knock my power out. The first entry by Sub-Human looks pretty good, so we're off to a good start. So who is going to do the Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, and Wasteland entries huh? :wink:

Yeah, let's not try to be cliche here (even if they are going to get added to the list sooner or later)...

Let's not stifle participation too much, if someone feels inclined to do it by all means, but plenty of other titles will need write-ups too, so hop to it people! ON THE DOUBLE! SOUND OFF LIKE YOU GOT A PAIR!

{Sorry folks. Army Tourette's} :D

Will we really be able to fill the entire 100 positions? RPG's are great and all, but I think we'll be missing a lot by making genre a restriction. Why not change it to: "The 100 best story based games."? Because otherwise I fear we'll have to cut the number down by the end, or not be able to include games like Spec Ops: The Line, portal, Half Life 2(!). You know, games with the same impact and writing as at least a decent rpg but wouldn't get a spot.

And who, and how, will we determine which game gets what spot? Planescape: Torment, Arcanum or Fallout for #1? And #2?

@Mjolnir : why is Oblivion on good list and Skyrim on shit list?

I haven't played Skyrim yet.

Because Oblivion, to me, is a game that's not well written, but not written in that particular nonsensical way that makes you bang your head on a hard surface. Skyrim, if you don't turn off your brain, will (for me at least).
