The NMA Top 100 RPG's Discussion

I'm not sure 100 rpg's exist. I don't indulge that many computer games, so I couldn't give you many for the list. Most of the Fallout games would be on the list, with 1, 2, and New Vegas near the top and FO3 maybe sort of midway. Tactics is not an RPG. I just got Morrowind as my entry into the Elder Scrolls series and I'll have to get back to you on that one.

I'm very curious to read what you guys come up with. I'm sure many of your suggestions will be well worth considering as games to try out.

After scanning this thread I realise I haven't played half of these games - I hang my head in shame. :look: But at least there is a list here for me to educate myself with.

First step is to get a new pc, pixote. You don't need to throw your dinossaur pc away, just get a new one and use both.

I think we can actually have a go at this, but with a separate board. Anyone willing to give it a go and be part of the work?

Yes sir. Reporting for duty sir! :salute:

Some of my favourite jRPGS that I haven't seen listed yet:

Dragon Quest 8
Final Fantasy X
Phantasy Star 2

All of my favourite wRPGs have already been mentioned I think

I can't wait to see where this thing goes!

(And these should probably be included but I haven't played them, YET)
Planescape: Torment
Deus Ex
Wasteland
Fallout 2
Arcanum

WTF - I can't believe anyone wanting to post here hasn't played Fallout 2. Away with you sir...

Played it but didn't finish it. But I'll be replaying Fallout 1 and 2 and playing all the other games on that list real soon.

if we are going to include the diablos:
sacred
titan quest
sacred 2
diablo 2
diablo 3
magika
torchlight

( note 1 is missing as that had no story outside intro/closing videos )

The original Diablo does have a story outside the intro and closing videos. It's simple but it's there.

Personally, I like Diablo better than Diablo 2 which was way too long.

My list is small but very decent:

Fallout
Fallout 2
Arcanum
Planescape Torment
Diablo
Diablo 2
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2

I played tons of other role-playing games, but nothing else ever came close to the above.

The best RPG ever? Probably Planescape Torment, followed closely by Arcanum and Fallout.

The list is great... I'm glad you didn't add Skyrim. Does anyone else hate that game?

With a passion.

I prefer Diablo 1 too. The atmosphere and story were top notch at the time, and the game is still fun to play. Delving deeper and deeper into Hell gets me every time. Anyone who says otherwise should be sacrificed to Diablo. :)

Putting Oblivion on the list but denying Skyrim seems... wrong to me.

It's up for discussion. I would rather Oblivion be off altogether personally, but it's not up to me. Oblivion was a step back (imo) from Morrowind and Skyrim was another. Sure, Skyrim looks nice, but it doesn't feel like a real RPG to me. Exploration and stats, a RPG that does not make.

(I know I'm in the minority, but that's ok too)

What about Daggerfall?

Only problem I have with the list is the absence of KRPGs. I generally prefer the online ones, and in many Korean works, the voice acting is PHENOMENAL. Yeah, they're not so much "role playing" as actual story-driven, character-centered RPGs, but that's why they're their own category!

Of those I've played, my favorites that I consider some of the best of all time are:

Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle
Mabinogi Heroes ("Vindictus" in North America)

L2, during the Chaotic Chronicles years, was without any doubt THE best online player-vs-player RPG ever made. Some of the tension and competitiveness was successfully replicated in its spiritual successor Rappelz, and also the completely-unrelated-but-equally-as-immersive game Demon's Souls. MH/Vindi was both an excellent online RPG with great mechanics, graphics, and animation AND complemented by an excellent story that was emotionally involving and made you want to keep playing to find out what happens next.

Probably because Korean RPGs don't have a big enough precense on the market to consider them their own category.

Yeah, but that's just like suggesting Oblivion and Skyrim need to be on the list because of their clout. It's all part of the same discussion that "presence" has nothing to do with "best". Some of the best are long-forgotten, or never were even represented when they were "popular".

Though, personally, I don't know where you've been that you'd say KRPGs DON'T have "a big enough" presence... EVERYTHING online is overshadowed by WoW, but that doesn't mean its competitors are small and unnoticeable. As far as the online RPG market, I'm seeing overwhelmingly more KRPGs than otherwise.

There being a lot of shovelware of a certain denomination doesn't mean it has any major precense on the market.

Sure, from Morrowind. But that's like decades ago. Compared to Oblivion, Skyrim was a definitive step up, imo.

I think almost any of the Spiderweb Software/Jeff Vogel games can find their place here. Avadon: The Black Fortress got quite a lot of (deserved) attention/hype when it came out last year and is the most streamlined and accessible for a complete RPG rookie but you could throw anything from the Avernum or Geneforge series into such a list and they would hold their own.
