Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra. This nutter pioneered what's been described as 'Afrofuturistic Jazz', its really Avant-Garde Big Band and then later on he started doing more abstract free jazz. This guy also released a massive discography on his own label, but Angels and Demons at Play is the album I'm listening to now.
